oh come on, the article says, "Janus would add a hacker-resistant clock to portable music players for files encoded in Microsoft's proprietary Windows Media Audio format." We all know that when Microsoft makes something hacker-resistant there's just no way to crack it.

In 1998, the company began to quietly fly academics to its headquarters for previews of the technology. Damien Watkins, then a lecturer at Monash University in Australia, recalled that some of his peers wore Linux T-shirts to show their skepticism. In the end, though, they were won over in part by the promise of the technology -- and by a $150,000 donation the company made to the university, he said.

If I'd known professors were that cheap, I'd have picked up a couple a long time ago.

I mentioned 3EB only to say how difficult it is becoming to find the songs that you want. They are doing a bang-up job of seeding the network with fake files posing as the songs you want.

My point was that as file-sharing becomes less convenient, and the purchasing at places like Apple's iTunes becomes more commonplace, the RIAA's revenues will start to pick back up.

  10. Dumb, dumb, dumb on RIAA To Sue Hundreds Of File Swappers · · Score: 2, Insightful

This is ridiculous. If the RIAA wasn't so concerned plummeting sales (hello, it's the economy stupid!) they'd realize that letting things run their course would be far wiser. With Kazaa threatening to go legal, and Apple's iTunes doing so well, it's only a matter of time before users get tired of hunting down songs hidden among garbage tracks on the free p2p networks.
I mean, just the other day, I was trying to download a couple songs from the new Third Eye Blind album because I'd left the CD that I'd already purchased at home, but I downloaded 20 rotten tracks for every one that I was looking for.

How will I know if I'm buying microsoft toilet-paper? I'll just feel it in my bones. This is why I've been reading /. for so long, so that I can just feel that sort of thing. Also, if I have to sign a EULA or something before using it, I'll know.
Plus, I'm just going to use the single-ply sheets that look like normal paper- not the double-ply, flowery, squishy toilet-paper that I'm sure will have come from microsoft. Just something to get the job done, and something that won't break. That's what I need.

  13. Not trolling either on Buffy Series Finale Tonight · · Score: 2, Insightful

why does this come up every time Slashdot posts an article on Buffy? I am a nerd, and it does matter to me. There are plenty of other nerds who also care about Buffy. The CNN article even makes a point of saying that nerds and other social outcasts could relate to the characters, and that this fueled the show's cult following. I mean, if you need a scifi tie-in, Nathan Fillion (the actor playing the major villain in the finale) was the captain on Firefly.

  14. Re:more careful reading on Spiderman, Sony vs Marvel · · Score: 3, Informative

Actually, after a quick search to verify facts, it's quite clear that Sony Pictures would have made a sizable profit even without Spiderman last year. This article shows Sony with two other movies in the top ten from last year. So, I don't think there's any doubt the story is a bunch of bull.

Comparing Diablo2 to Warcraft3 visually, I'd say that overall 2D is better looking, but for gameplay I have to say that I prefer 3D - it just works better. With 3D, when my characters go behind a tree or large building, I can rotate the camera to find them, rather than hunt for their outline. Also, I think elevation works a lot better in 3D than in 2D, but all of this is just my opinion. :)
