What's rude about calling a spade a spade? You have a nice solution for your project, but that doesn't excuse linking directly to someone's homepage without asking if he can take the load. That's rude. The guy says so. You don't like it. No problem. But you're wrong to be offended. Or maybe needlessly sensitive.
"If Microsoft came out with an MP3 player that didn't support music bought off the iTunes music store, people here would raise hell and complain about how "M$" is evil. "
Let me put it this way... There's no music shop apart from the iTunes music store that sells to mac users.
Let me put it another way... All along MS has kept its DRM WMA Windows only.
And yet another way... there's no mp3 player apart from the iPod that supports iTunes music shop songs - not their fault actually. But guess what, I don't care, nobody with an iPod does. Else they wouldn't have bought it.
Seriously, I don't mind Apple's scheming one bit. What I do mind is that no one is bothered by the fact that all the others lock out Apple users by default. Even Sony. Go figure. And then we're supposed to be embittered by Apple's move to keep its seamless experience the prevailing one? No way Jose! I say More Of The Same.
Apple updated its iPod firmware and Real got locked out again. Big deal, they've been told. I might not think this very nice, but that's the way it is.
BUT IT TOOK PEOPLE ONE MONTH AND A HALF TO FIND OUT!
So get real here, where are the victims of Apple's anti-social behaviour, where are the duped customers??????
The real news - if any - is that apparently Real has at least one (1) iPod customer, the person who found out a 50 days after the fact that his song(s?) is locked out.
His Jobsness has told everybody who wants to hear it that if there are compelling reasons to do so, he'd open up his DRM scheme. Well, that may seem very anti-social, but not more than every other company does or tries to do and when all is said and done, I guess at the Real side of things, there aren't that much compelling reasons to be found.
But go ahead and "don't ever buy Apple". Say no to Monopolists. Shees, which high definition DVD format are you going to boycot? Are you faithful to Betamax still? How's your 8-track doing?
OK, not to be smug here, but it didn't affect Safari 1.2.4 (v125.12) on OS X 10.3.6. At the end of the day, it would be nice to have a list of system- and browser combinations that are not affected, it makes for less sensational headings, but well, it would be the geeky thing to do, no?
"New Vulnerability Affects Not All Browsers" mmm, might need some work... What about:
"New Vulnerability Thwarted by FOSS and Apple Complot!!!"
I really don't get it. Would Apple buy IBM, or would IBM buy Apple?
While the latter is possible, it would be rather pointless for both, like a zebra trying to mate with an emoe.
Interesting maybe would be some sort of closer cooperation with Darwin, or Apple buying the PC part of IBM, or having closer cooperation there. It would maybe get some cheaper "business machines" out running OS X. and give Apple a boost in Server sales.
All pretty far-fetched, but hey, it's the season to be jolly:-)
"I'm amazed that is the mindset of an security tester and even more amazed that he feels comfortable posting that viewpoint publicly on the IE blog. No wonder they have so many security problems!"
It's a widespread problem, this mindset, shared by lots and lots of admins, power users and people who happen to just spend too much time with their computer and thus know a teensy bit more than their neighbor...
Yes, the BBC are balanced. It's the new word for "When I say white, I'm obliged to hint at black as well. Thus not really offending anyone, no sir - or madam, or or... it."
It doesn't mean they are impartial or reasonable or whatever. But regardless: imo the BBC is one of the most impartial *big* media-outlets available. Which doesn't mean all that much, but still makes it worthwhile to visit.
Well, if Paris is your only reference, you could have a very negative image of the French... Beautiful city, but you have to be lucky to meet the nice people. A bit like NY before 9/11. Absolutely no irony intended, have been there before and (just) after, and it was incredible how nice everyone was. BTW, imo NY is incredible (literally, I didn't believe half of what I saw;-)
And, actually, I live in France at the moment. I don't think most'd consider this post an insult, given the context. They have a wonderful appreciation of the cynical...
Needless to say I love it here, although I don't think much of their "freedom fries". Belgian fries, there is no substitute!
Depending on your definition of "People". I'd say if your definition is all inclusive (US Americans), then we can debate till we're blue in the face. If however you want to count in all the riff-raff, you can safely assume it's a vast majority.;)
I don't know, doesn't that happen all the time at Congress? Isn't that what neo-conservatism is all about?
"We don't know what'll happen, but we have faith in God, America and the Free Market - unless of course it isn't in our interest."
Seems almost refreshing after Reagan and Thatcher's "This is not happening." style of spending...
I'd rather they throw a few millions at a meteorite than countless billions at the army in the name of Peace and Democracy...
On that topic, there's a nice study floating around correlating the amount of the use of the word "Peace" used in political speeches with the subsequent use of violence against other nations... Go google if interested.
"Only eight years later, but yup. An interesting product that still can't do what normal users want to do."
Pretty funny how most Linux users suddenly consider themselves "normal" users when confronted with statements like this.
Well, here's a hint. Although it can be near impossible to say what a normal user (or Aunt Emmy or Joe Sixpack) actually IS, it's pretty simple to state what he/she/it is not: a normal user is not someone who will go through two, three simulations or band-aid software solutions in order to do stuff other platforms do out of the box.
Yes, this also means that normal users (wnen on Windows) are those people who happily infect themselves, their family and their friends. Who said normal equals sane?
iTunes does have internet radio, if that's what you mean, and imo it's lots simpler than most others. The standard included airwaves are pretty cool and it's very easy to add streams.

"If your servers can't handle the load, say so.
Don't accuse newssites and innocent surfers of being 'abusers'..."
Hi there,
I love to pay for traffic of people who are too lame to link to the google cache.
That's how I am. Not only do I work for free, I'm pleased to pay for everything people throw at my feet, including traffic.
Thank you please, can I have some more?
For all you "My mac seems just a bit snappier" people out there, try using Cocktail once in a while to maintain your system a bit...
;-)

What's wrong here people!

It holds its value remarkably well, don't you think? ;)
Excuse my french, but what idiot links to PDF files from /. anyway?
/. proud to be bandwith eaters? Here's a clue: bandwidth costs money.

Linux conquering the desktop? Any year now.
(sorry, couldn't resist. It was this or a Beowulf cluster remark...)
Oh well, then I guess it really is all speculation. I don't see Jobs starting all that sh*t again. Then again, hell already froze over once ;-)
See? Even if it worked, it doesn't make sense... but yes, it'd be interesting to watch... ;-)

Yes, the read me does say that. I'm one of those rare people who actually read them ;)
And yes, regardless, nice app, nice to port it. I'm sure it'll be a hit.
but if there are known problems, why not release the OS X version say two weeks later? Just asking...
Cheers!
Very nice indeed, but imo it should be made clear - before you download - that the OS X version is beta, with some awkward known and unknown bugs.
Disclaimer: this remark because AbiWord is obviously targeted to non-power users...
ps: and with KDE/mac lurking around the corner, what exciting times!

Instead of wasting screen space, you'd better read up on the history of OS X.
All this "Apple should give back to the FOSS community" shit, while it's primarily Apple doing the giving.
Go Google, or go to Ars...
If I get most Linux users, I think the preferred method is buying a CD, ripping it to Ogg and going from there...
It's not my cuppa, but it sure beats downloading degraded mp3's.
"If they owe anyone anything, it might be the BSD community, not the Linux community."
Indeed, and I've read the BSD community actually feels it owes Apple a lot for stoking the fire.
This FOSS/Apple misconception is as persistant as Bill Gates owning a large piece of Apple.
