The female department part was a joke, maybe you could work on your social skills yourself, specifically the humor section.
I would rather that funded research of any kind was put into something a little more worth while, like trying figuring out how to cure a virus, there are no known cures for any viruses out there, we know how to treat them, how to make the person more comfortable, but we can't fix them. Maybe they work on some cures for cancer and AIDS.
Compared to that sort of research, this isn't exactly the most important research on the planet.
I was actually reminded of that farside comic where the guy invents a headpiece to interpret what dogs are saying when they bark and all he gets is "hey! hey, hey! hey, hey!heeeeey"
In other news Scientists have resolved all the world's problems.
I'm seriously wondering where we manage to get so much money from in order to just waste it on dumb research. Mice sing.. good for them. I would if I could.. but it wouldn't really help me in the female deparment at all..
I absolutely agree.
I walked out of an interview for one job, much to their distress. They said that *all* their IT people had MCSE, MCP, A+, Network+ and were degree qualified. I told them flat out that I wasn't a MCSE or MCP and that I didn't have a degree and that I refuse to work for a company who can't get it through their heads that you don't need the certs to have the knowledge and experience and that having the certs doesn't mean you do have the knowledge and experience.
They rang me back 2 days later to offer me a job, I turned them down flat. Mainly because I had already been given a much better offer elsewhere, but they weren't to know that;-)

A+ and Network+ are pretty basic stuff. If you are already working with PCs and networking equipment you should have no problems passing the exams. I did the exams with next to no study and passed them all first shot.
Why should your job give you a pay rise if you aren't actually bringin any more value to the company or doing any extra tasks?
Actually this is a perfectly normal practice within business. Do you see Coke and Pepsi together in any chain fast food store?? No. McDonalds and Burger King (Hungry Jacks here in Australia) both sell Coke, KFC sells Pepsi.
Not that I'm defending Microsofts Business practices, although I'd have to say that we could all learn something from Bill Gates, the guy is obviously successful in what he does.
In a recent update, the OLM have taken several 10 year olds and a whole class of preschoolers to court for using crayons and markers to draw pictures of the OlympicsTM in class
The australian government is certainly not short of money, they double and triple tax us on everything they can. They have had a massive surplus on the buget for the last couple of years (massive for a country with only 19million people anyway).
They are just worried that they might miss out on taxes on our gambling money if we spend it overseas rather than in australia.
I'm in the process of setting up a link between my house and a friends house about 3kms away (just under 2 miles for all those that haven't yet assimilated).
We are using 2 directional aerials with about 8dbi of gain. In the process of trying to get the signals to hit each other somewhere in the middle, I've managed to pick up over 35 different wireless access points, 5 of those are "secure" (a very relative term).
I view wireless security in the same light as putting a padlock on my front gate, it will stop people from using the gate, but won't stop them from jumping over it.. that's also why I own a large dog.. haha.. and have locks on my doors and windows..
I personally use dreamweaver for coding.. I know, I know, all that gui overhead and only semi-compliant code if it generates it itself.. but it does have the useful clean up word html tool, then I get to working it over in pure code.
I was without a net connection for 6 weeks (THANKS TELSTRA) so I would drive down to my local McDonalds, they have wireless hotspots there, but across the road some guy had setup their own wireless access point with DHCP and everthing. Why pay for Maccas wireless (slow) when you can use the guys wireless from accross the road??
haha
A bit of war driving through brisbane, australia shows about 1 in 5 wireless networks are "secure".

I'm sorry, who threw logic out the window here.
First goal of any business:
- make a profit
in order to achieve that:
- market your product
- try and "lock in" your customers, it is much easier to sell to an already happy customer than it is to create a new customer.
- provide useful support that will keep your customers happy.
- have a leading edge on your competition.
Since when has it been a crime to be successful in the IT industry? Who made it illegal to make a profit?
Nobody forced anyone to buy Microsoft Windows, nor has anyone forced anyone to buy Red Hat Linux....

Yes, we still have massive companies like 3M, Microsoft, Apple and many other large, successful companies too.
Here are a couple of good books to read on this whole subject:
Dare to Fail by Billi S Lim
In Search of Excellence: Lessons from America's best run companies by Robert H Waterman Jr, Thomas J Peters, Tom Peters
Some pretty good reading if you can get your hands on them. They both encourage research for the sake of research.

sounds about right there...heh

Bank cheques of any kind a tracable, they can "follow" them and find out whose bank account they are paid into. A PO is not hard to stake out.
Not that I'm looking for ways to do it.. haha.

I think the main problem for the wannabe hacker is the getting paid bit. How the heck do they remain anonymous and get paid?
It's all very well to do that to a company, but you aren't exactly going to hand out your own bank details to the company in order to get paid.. heh.
