I have used DirectNIC since Jan. 2001 and have had 0 problems. I don't use any of their features, except for their all new domain locking feature. I currently have 3 domains with them.

  2. Re:beta.. on World of Warcraft Open Beta Online · · Score: 1

Well, it's looking pretty good, thus far, but they just introduced new stuff. Hunter and Pally talents have been in for about 2 days now, as has raid content. These things have been internally tested, but were just released to beta. There will probably need to be some polishing/bug fixes. Other, more minor things, such as a new death penality, were just introduced. They will probably get/need tweaking. There has been server instability during the waning weeks of Closed Beta and the fourm server was/is quite meek. It folded every time there was a server outage. Despite these issues, it is looking really good at this point.

I use foobar to listen to OGG streams and it works quite well. If you are forced to stream from a Windows box, you can also use foobar to complete this task as well via the magic of plugins. Oddsock has pretty much everything you'd need to complete this portion of the task (for which the poster did not request, but someone else might want).

Every class can solo fairly well in WoW (some better than other, of course). I actually spent a lot of time soloing during Closed Beta. I did quite enjoy group play though, as well. It is nice because if you are an anti-social person, you can still enjoy the game without groups, but if you like grouping, there's plenty to do on that end of the spectrum, too.

  8. Clearly the Correct Action on 8th Grader Suspended for Using 'net send' Command · · Score: 0

Clearly the best action the school could have taken was suspending the student. Obviously taking the student out of the classroom and thus denying him of some education is the proper way to treat an offense for which there was no warning, or, most likely, no rule on the books.
This was possibly the worst knee-jerk reaction in a school about which I have heard in a long time. I cannot imagine a school administrator suspending a child for 3 days for causing such a minor and benign annoyance. It is possible this boy had been repremanded in the past and told that any further transgressions would result in suspension, but I'm guessing that was not the case. This is completely rediculous.

*Disclaimer -- I think this whole situation is moronic and I do not agree with what I am about to say. It is more of a devil's advocate sort of thing.* IANAL, but I can offer a thought. The argument can be made that Rockstar is encouraging the killing of all Hatians. That is not speech that is protected by the 1st Amendment. I am not free to say I am going to kill the president, nor am I free to tell someone else to go commit genocide. I believe the Haitian Community leaders can make this overly-weak argument.

I don't see how PhD students making better TAs affects the undergrad program at a place like Rose-Hulman. At Rose, there are no TAs. Professors teach all of the classes. There is only 1 professor (that was the number when I got there, it could be a couple more now, but I wouldn't bet on it) who is not a professor and that person teaches Humanities courses, not engieneering/science. I can't speak for Harvy-Mudd or the others on the list, but I have a feeling they are in a similar boat. It's just the interesting rating system US News uses.
