    They release the source, but they don't release the shareware code and binary formats, so we
    can hack the games.

    The FogCreek Intern program is the best, the interns were filmed during the software development process.

    In the end, aardvark will be an interesting project. It is clear that the software companies are focused on training young talent. It would be nice if the other large IT shops would follow suit.

    I agree with this. I am stretching...but I am seeing the oppurtunity for SOA type of applications, so the entire application doesn't have to be written in one language. You don't have to write a million lines of J2EE app. You modularize your systems. You deploy on multiple machines. It is not being utilized, right now, but it makes sense.


    You could have your number crunching portion of the application written with Python, on a seperate machine. The business logic written in Java on a seperate machine. The interface(possibly) written PHP, possibly Java.


    "Performance, scalability, extendibility, cost of development (man-month), availability of libraries, cost of libraries, development tools"


    Slow down...


    1. It doesn't deliver performance at all, at least compared to other server-side technology.


    2. Scalability. Sort of, performance, buy a bigger machine. Software engineering wise, maybe.

    ...the others, Java is a little better at.

    Are you telling me that PHP garbage is worth half a billion dollars? What industry am in? Where am I?

    This is beyond the internet bubble of the 90s. Beyond the ancient California gold rush. This is like your 14 year old coming up with a highschool project, you coming in back and going, "Wow, honey this science experiment has to be worth several billion dollars, let's market it and sell it to google."

    No wonder America is a trillion dollars in debt.

    Interesting comment, it is a risk. But, I don't the core desktop users will ever switch. You will get companies that will switch or the tech community. But, you will still have Mom, Dad's, Normal people who will never hear of Linux.

    And there is nothing more frustrating than hearing, "Please submit as Word Doc only", "Please submit as power-point". "This site only works for Internet Explorer".

    This is one of those stupid manager decisions that we can watch first-hand. Microsoft "not" adopting a serious Linux(open source) strategy will just make them look silly. They won't lose money, but I know they could make some serious money-making technology.

    Microsoft should get in bed with Linux and go to work. They keep trying to play with it. Microsoft could clean up if they had a Microsoft desktop environment or something similar. They did it with the Mac? With Office, why not write software for Linux?

    They are acting like a bunch of babies, "We are Microsoft, we are better, so we won't worry about Linux.". What a bunch silliness. Same thing happened when they didn't take Java seriously. What JVM does Microsoft support, version 1.1? A 10 year-old could write an update to date virtual machine. Microsoft, get a clue.

    Java has been opensource since early on. You can see the source of almost every application in the suite through the mustang dev project.

    Get the wording right. If you mean Java might get a more open license or Apache/BSD style license say that.

    What I find amazing. This guy supposedly downloaded pictures off the internet. What about spyware, viruses.

    What if somebody else owned the computer previously? What about the ISPs and website owners who are hosting the sites?

    This is amazing to me, our justice system is really screwed up. Michael Jackson owns a ranch called Neverland Ranch, has kids over his ranch over the course of many, many years. Sleeps with kids and gets off????? This place is crazy.

    This is the best post I have read in years. I am so for this. I want to be unemployed. I want to be a hippie and walk the earth. It is already started, how hard is it to get a job now, with even the best of skills? Some people have been off for 10-20 months.

Remember Java represents a pretty big chunk of the developer market. Do you honestly believe that most java developers are only programming on Linux or Solaris? Or not to mention Java runtime installs? Plus, Linux has been standoffish due to the licensing issue with Sun's current license, for example the Debians and Gentoos. And, Solaris? Are people still using Solaris? Oh that is right, Sun opened Solaris because they are making so much money off the product? To the other poster, Windows being a crap-os. If you don't like Windows, good for you. You are smart, nobody uses windows. Why don't we port Java to Plan-9, I heard it is pretty good. ..Troll.
