RealPlayer my ass. AdPlayer more like it. You get this huge window full of advertisements and flashy widgets
LOL
The Linux version has not changed in a couple years. It is just a basic media player without the "ad player". But I can not bring myself to use the Real One thing on Windows.
I am an old EE fart! I like electrical engineering. It took me years to learn what I needed to design circuits and control systems. It only took me months to learn to write code. Because it takes a lot to reach critical mass it is harder to train people to replace you.
I know there are very bright and well educated people arouind the world. We are now in a global economy. Go for skills that are not quickly learned if you have the time, the inclination, and the funding.
Why don't they do like nVidia, release a pre-compiled binary driver core and an open-source, compilable interface
I hope it works better than the nVidia solution. I had a low end nVidia card. It was not very solid. After a long long wait Intel finally released the Linux driver for the on board graphics (845G). It was worth the wait. The driver was very very solid.
The RIAA will die a slow, painful death. This is inevitable.
I wishs I was so optimistic. It does take some work to find the non-RIAA music. We live in a "give me convenience or give me death" culture. The vast majority will follow the path of least resistance. They will listen to ClearChannel radio to find music. Most people will not take the effort to find alternatives.
Tivo _is_ more cost-effecttive, faster,... A guy's gotta have a hobby,...
A hobby is the real reason for building a MythTV box right now. The TiVo is very cost effective. Pay say $200 for the TiVo- DirectTV reciever. Then an extra $5/ month for the data-base TiVo subscription. In a few years I will want something new -- maybe High definition TV. Then maybe I will roll my own.
"In many ways, Frankel's future encapsulates the debate over the future of the Internet itself. Does it become just a distribution system for corporate product or more of a way to subvert that corporate control?"
I am surprised Rolling Stone would cover this. Rolling Stone has evolved into a tool for corporate control.

"Our mission is to help Yahoo! pioneer the next wave of the online world through innovation, invention and scientific contribution," said Dr. Flake. "By partnering with technology resources both inside and outside of Yahoo!, we aim to cultivate knowledge and expertise, solve fundamental technology problems and translate theory into practice to help maximize the social and economic potential of the Internet for consumers and businesses."
I like that name Dr. Flake. I have known some flakey phd's in my life!
From the language though it looks like he is a doctor of spin.
It seems it is too easy to convince the patent office right now. The examiners are overworked and do not have time to figure out if there is prior art or if the invention is not obvious to those skilled in the art. They just give patents to get the applications off their desk.
ps. This time shifting you get from TiVo that is beyond what VCRs can do is a great invention!
The SPAM will work if only one person in 10,000 si dumb enough to buy it. We whould be lucky if only one person in ten is clueless. Getting to where only 0.01% of the population is clueless is impossible.
We are inundated with more and more ads. We have gone from around 12 minutes of ads per hour on TV to over 20 minutes per hour. we have ads on web pages. We have spam. we have ads in elevators. Ads on disposable insulators on coffee cups.
Go to the movie theatre and pay your bucks. You see the still ads until showtime. Then we see 15 minutes of ads before the movie starts!
Enough already. If the advertisers want us to pay attention to ads, they should be limited to where they are appropriate. They should be limited to where they are paying for content. TV ads are OK, but give us too many and we will TiVo past them. Web page ads are OK. They pay for content and hosting.
If the torrent of ads was reduced to a reasonable level we might actually pay attention to some of them.
I liked the Swiss AD for Office XP. It featured a semi-dressed couple getting hot and heavy. The guy tries to unfasten the young lady's bra. A dialog box pops up (in Deutch!) asking for a password. It was great!
I go to one of these shops while my daughter takes riding lessons. It is First Street Coffee in Gilroy, CA.
They just have a DSL modem and an Apple Airport. No computer etc. This works just fine. People are not there long enough for major file sharing. I did download Open Office once while I was there.

Food used to be most of the economic output. Then we got good at mass producing food.
We had the industrial revolution. Most of the economy went to the manufacture and distribution of manufactured goods. Food became a small percentage of the total economic output.
Now we are very very good at manufacturing stuff. Everything is so cheap now. TVs are cheap. Computers are cheap. Not long ago it was a big deal to buy these mass produced toys. Now they are impulse buy. For a while Japan led the world in this manufacturing revolution.
Are we getting to a point where manufactured goods are not so imporant anymore. Perhaps manufactured goods are becoming a smaller part of the world economy. "Cultural" products are becoming more important and now onece again we are competing with the Japanise.
Somehow I get the feeling nanotech is a solution looking for a problem.

Yahoo message boards do not let me post links to google! I guess Yahoo takes this rivalry seriously.
This is on the level of saying "I did not inhale."
I want to paste Andrew Jackson's head on a nude body. Can I do that with Photoshop?

You can buy some music that is RIAA free. The site RIAA Radar helps you avoid paying indirectly to the RIAA.

Or you can pay to download Music with no DRM that is RIAA free from MagnaTune.

But when you are in Japan try to get some fiber in your diet. Bad things happen if you do not. Horrible things!
