  1. We've run into some problems with this on The Wireless City · · Score: 4, Informative

In the Wireless Network I worked for on my city, we had quite a few problems with kids using bandwidth for piracy and whatnot. As a result, we unfortunately had to block p2p ports, but the free service has been good for our community.

After she see you whip out your Palm IIIxe with custom linux faceplate, h4x0r3d memory and linux plugin any non-geek chick would probably give you a fake number. Of course, I wouldn't ;)

  3. Re:And while you're so hot about the movie... on New Lord of the Rings Trailer · · Score: 2, Interesting

When you buy the movie or go to see it, you're intent is to watch a good quality movie. You do make a point, I'm paying $7.50 for my movie ticket and some of that is going to go into limiting my rights, but I'm not worrying about that, I just want to see the movie with my fiance.

And piracy? How can anyone stand those awful telesync's? I know, I know, there as a good quality FotR dvd rip out a month after the movie, but that is pretty rare.

  4. dragon solution on Using PDAs for Dictation? · · Score: 2

Actually, Dragon Naturally Speaking Doctor's Edition comes with a special USB dictaphone that plugs into the computer and translates the voice into text using Dragon's software. I'm not sure if it works with anything but Windows but its certainly cheaper than hiring someone to do it.

  5. Sorry, but on OSTA Announces MultiPhoto/Video Specification · · Score: 3, Insightful

MPEG is severly dated, in my opinion, when we have stuff that can produce great quality at low bitrates. And, hell, this is an upstart isn't it? What kind've of open mind would say that we shouldn't even try and look into/make? another codec and blindly follow whatever preconcieved notions we have.

  14. reason for suit on EU Considering Another MS Antitrust Suit · · Score: 5, Interesting

The reason for the lawsuit is clearly seen in the article:

The .Net initiative attempts to link Internet users to the Microsoft system by giving them a "passport" that authenticates their identity and gives them access to Microsoft Web sites for e-mail and online games, and e-commerce sites that conform to the .Net idea.

This phone uses passport to authenticate users on phone-based services. This allows business users, etc to easily tie their mobile phones to their central .NET servers, further binding them to MS software, etc.

My question is, where's the Linux based Open Source phones? ;)

  15. Make Win32 Trojans Open Source on Reverse Engineering Win32 Trojans on Linux · · Score: 4, Funny

This is why we should be coding everything in Open Source. The fact being is, in this highly dynamic internet society today Trojans can hide their code to prevent security professionals from doing their job. When we finally open source these trojans, our software will become more secure because programmers from around the world can work on making the trojans and the programs the effect faster, better, and more secure.

Currently, trojans are badly written because of their inherent proprietary nature. Using something like sourceforge a multitude of coders can be simultaneously working on different parts of a trojan while the open source community can review, debug and test the code for infectioness effectiveness.

Only when we make Trojans open source will we realize that our computer controlled Oil tankers accross the world will be safe from Da Vinci.

  16. this is not an ID for everyone on Registered Traveler ID Initiative · · Score: 5, Informative

Reading the story you find out this is not a national ID system.
TSA has made important progress in selecting a uniform system of identification, a card-based biometric information system, that will support positive identification of individuals working in the transportation sector and encompassing the aviation, train, shipping, and trucking industries.
This system is not for you, the everyday individual. This is for making sure people like stewards on airlines don't have to go through security checks everyday to see if they're carrying a bomb. Using new authentication technology that's been discussed on /. already (ie: retinal scanning) they can pass these people by so they can do their jobs quickly, rather than waiting in a security line everyday just to go to work. We do that enough on city "expressways" already..
