my point was that if *you* were building an app and the interface worked the way you wanted it too then a bunch of people whined it didn't work how they wanted, would you be excited at this new opportunity to make it into an app with an interface you don't like or just tell them to fix it themselves?
gimp had the issue that none of the developers thought the UI was broken, and iirc they have been quite happy to bring interface customisation code into the main line if anyone could be arsed to write it (and, i assume, it doesn't suck).
if only you didn't infringe on 15 different broadly worded patents that that someone else magically finds as soon as you threaten them with legal action.
it's not a physical work analogy, the waiter has to get you the food weather you tip or not. If i never tip then the waiter loses nothing by your reasoning.
there's ways of keeping population down, for example you can't breed if you're ever going to take the drug. also, it's not that scary to have eternal youth if you can just take a gun to your face when you've had enough.
probably agree with you, but suggesting that the beardy weirdys wouldn't get rid of the "stupid shit" like.eco and.xxx, they'd probably make it open slather on tlds. at least if they didn't suck they would:)
there is a non-zero amount of pirates that would buy if they could not pirate which means they get less money. Less money hurts your business. Arguing that indirect actions can't harm someone is just plain wrong, i guess you don't tip because it doesn't harm the waiter?
saying that the artists are not hurt by people illegally copying their work is just wrong, i know people who both buy and pirate games who will pirate a game if it's available and just buy it if it's not (too annoying to pirate, such as WoW or SC2)
the only scenario where it doesn't hurt them is when you would absolutely not buy something but copy it instead. there is no way that %100 of the people who copy the game are in this category.
they are proposing a parking ticket style system, they're going to fine you (from the wording it looks like it will be a reasonable amount, there's no real indication but it *feels* like $150-$200) and threaten legal action if you don't pay. combined with the lack of DRM it really does seem quite fair.
it's a good idea, but until you see a really good director screw it up it's a bit of a shot in the dark, i'm sure that at least one director as ruled with an iron fist and pushed out a good movie or two
sure, microsoft haven't really been directly involved in killing off open source stuff, they know how much that gets the nerd rage going, but i think you're unfairly restricting microsoft's actions to just action against open source. MS have never had any problems using unfair tactics to kill off a competitor; the reason they haven't sued wine or ReactOS is that they just are not worth the effort. If ReactOS hits 5% install base then i think we'll see MS start to get quite a bit more interested in firing lawyers in their general direction.
not really sure what your point is here, ms have decided that they need to play catchup on web interop and finally realised that silverlight was not the solution, i mean everyone suddenly hates flash, why would they want to move to a slightly better version of flash? also in that article the "betrayal by microsoft" was adding html 5 support to some features in bing that were silverlight only previously. damn you microsoft, be more evil and lock people into my preferred platform!
it's not free, it's just an efficient way of gathering kinetic energy from the wind. i doubt you could gain more energy than attaching a battery to a dynamo on a fan the size of the one on this car. the car might be more or less efficient than converting it to electric energy tho (probably more from the sounds of it).
rephrasing... whatever.

so then it's ok not to tip if you never tip and the place isn't too busy?

are you suggesting one source of funding is better than the other?

you didn't read my fucking comment past the first comma or else you'd know how it hurts them
fining you the retail price is only fair if they can reliably fine every single person who downloads the game.
Yes it's an attempt to bully people, but in the same way that parking fines are an attempt to bully people.
When did private companies become the legal system
erm... 20-30 years ago?

if supply were limited it would be prudent to just buy your daily allowance of bars for almost nothing then barter them for other goods

stop voting parent troll, it obviously isn't

tbh i'd prefer to be a penal colony than founded by a bunch of puritans, but whatever floats your boat :)
i could spend 20 minutes a day organising email, but i found it easier just to forward it all to a gmail account with an actual working search.
because any mail server is better than exchange?
you're an idiot if you use ruby for speed, you're just as dumb if you think ruby is bad because it's slow
you should get that written on your pants, you know, for the irony

i doubt they're trying that hard, it's just to preempt people from bitching
$2000 dollars is not enough by a long shot. someone might do it for free though.
