  1. Failure of legal system is a truly epic failure on Indian Woman Convicted of Murder By Brain Scan · · Score: 1

This is a classic case where the prosecution are a bunch of lazy asses and think the latest toy can replace good detective work. On something such as a murder case it's either get good evidence or you must drop the case. This would be a shit storm of epic proportions here in the US. BTW brain scans cannot be used to prove innocence or guilt heck they were able to fool them on myth busters.

  2. Re:They think... on Indian Woman Convicted of Murder By Brain Scan · · Score: 1

It is possible to do a brain scan to detect that a statement is untrue or unsettling in some way, but that doesn't mean that the person is guilty of a specific crime.

It takes a long time of interrogation to be able to measure what's normal and what's not. And even if you get an abnormal reading it may not be caused by guilt - it may be because the subject is unsettling.

True it can't prove someone committed a crime BTW the myth busters busted this one it's actually very inaccurate. Tory and Grant were able to fool the machine fairly easily. All too often the prosecution are a bunch of lazy asses who don't want to do proper detective work and think the latest toy can make their job easy when the truth is there is no substitute nor will there ever be one for good detective work.

They would not even need a descent stage just add harpoons to the bigelow station they would have to live in for six months. Orion by it's self can't go any farther then the moon since it only has two weeks of lifesupport. To reach said asteroid would also require recreating skylab so the crew has a place to live. Fortunately this is being recreated outside nasa by Bigelow Aerospace in the Sundacer and BA330 modules. The BA330 the larger of the two only weighs 55,000lbs less then the LSAM. You also might want something with a lot more total impulse then the EDS since it will not be up to performing the task with satisfactory safety margins. If the asteriod is close the old nerva NTR engine of the 70s would be more then up to the task of sending an Orion and a BA330 to the asteroid and returning them safely to LEO. Also it would be good for the NTR stage to also perform some breaking since the apollo conic shape really is only good for 21,000mph reentries faster then that you require a lifting body or biconic vehicle. Lift to drag and reentry gs go hand in hand and a .3 L/D may not cut it if you come in at 28,000mph esp after 6months of zero G and esp if you omit the BA300 since with out that space exercise in the crew will be in a lot worse shape.

  12. Re:Paper studies do not a mission make on NASA Planning Mission To 40-Meter-Wide Asteroid · · Score: 1

The stock baseline Orion only has 2 weeks worth of life support since it's a small craft with an open loop life support system. It also doesn't have much delta v only 1640 M/sec before orbital insertion some private vehicles such as dreamchaser actually have more delta V for example. Such a mission would also require launching a large habitation section likely a bigelow sundacer or BA330 for the crew to live in during those six months and a propulsion module likely a simple nevra type nuclear thermo rocket since this is the cheapest and easiest option. I find it unlikely they'll ever perform the mission and if they ever do go anywhere beyond the moon they will likely simply go directly to mars in some 800ton vehicle who's funding will nab a lot of money for contractors.

Thats for the cargo dragon and it's so it can use the CBM or common berthing mechanism on node 2. Why you would want to use the CBM for cargo so you can carry equipment racks which cannot fit though either the Russian or the shuttle docking ports. The CBM is 50 inches wide vs a little over 31" for the russian docking port. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Berthing_Mechanism But the CBM can't handle much misalignment while the Russian port and even APAS can be a few degrees out of alignment so the arm must be used. One piece of equipment that can't fit is the oxygen generators which need to be replace and serviced every few years. The ATV uses the Russian docking port despite it being too small for a lot of items is so it can also transfer fuel which can only be done thought those ports as the CBM does not have propellant connections. The CARV ATV might use a CBM though since the reentry vehicle may not have lines for propellant.

Orion might not be able to but it's not big loss as it will not have much cargo capacity anyway and would be way too expensive to use in this manner even the ESA ATV would be far less costly but the spacex dragon sure will be able to perform automated docking but in automated mode they choose to use the station RMS so they can use the CBM to transfer large cargo that can't fit though the docking ports just like the Japanese H2 vehicle.. The Taurus II Cygnus vehicle also will be able to but it's launch vehicle doesn't exist yet though I think Griffin screwed up again can this guy get anything right as the SS/L 1300 series bus based tug or the spacedev arctus would have been a far lower risk choice. As you can see in the web sites both these craft are vastly superior to cygnus which I believe is much too small to be useful also it's LV uses an engine not currently in production the NK-33 not to mention the launch vehicle the Taurus II is presently vapor ware vs being existing hardware like the EELVs SS/L and spacehab use or presently being constructed like spacex's falcon 9. http://www.thespacereview.com/article/1024/1 http://www.arctus-spacecraft.com/

Seems you are wrong on a lot of counts ISS only needs to occasionally reboost also said tug can just remain docked to the station while it waits for a cargo/fuel container to be launched. One of the COTS competitors SS/L had a tug based on the 1300 series satellite bus this tug would have had a service life of 15 years. Though nasa in their presently misguided management choose a vastly inferior vehicle by Orbital which is to launch on a rocket that does not even exist yet which I believe was a very bad choice vs this flexible tug.
