I'm moving in that direction. I've stopped looking at news sites and mostly stopped listening to news on the radio (other than the 5 min summary on my drive home). I originally had a fear of becoming 'uninformed' on the days current events, but honestly that hasn't happened. I hear enough to keep abreast, but don't dive into the latest outrage de jour and I've never been happier.

I actually gave up on watching or checking the news every five minutes when it went from 'These are the important things you must know!' to 'Here's what you should be outraged about today!'. I don't need to be told what I should or shouldn't be angry/disappointed/worried about, I'm a big boy and I'll make up my own mind on that. I just want to be told what's happening in the most neutral way possible, but that's not possible anymore it seems so I gave up. I'll listen to local news for a the highlights, but that's about it.

You've got some pretty powerful rose-colored glasses there. :)

The XE line was full of cheap crap that was simply low cost XL era stuff or items that were already having their finishing touches put on them when the crash happened. Almost no innovation there which is why most of the software world ignored it after 1985. The ST line was alright, but even then it suffered from Tramiel's terminal cheapness and stagnated pretty fast (not that Amiga fared much better). The Jaguar wasn't even an Atari product, they just bought it from a company called Flare. I'll agree with you though, after the 2600 and original 8-bit systems (400/800) it was all downhill.

There really wasn't much they could do though, once the 'PC Clone Revolution' happened nothing was going to compete. If Jobs hadn't come back with OS X at just the right time even Apple would have disappeared.

Hell it's not even your daddy's Atari. The real Atari died in 1984, from then on it was a shambling zombie of its former self until someone decided to mercifully put it down in 1996. After that it was just a collection of IP and trademarks that has been bought and sold way too many times.

I just sneaked in under the wire for one at my company (I was hired in around 2000 and they stopped sometime in 01/02). I've been enticed by other companies, but one of the main reasons I stay at mine is the pension is too nice to pass up (assuming it's still there when I retire that is, I also have a 401K and other investments).

The did this for half of my building (top floor is open while the bottom is still the standard cubicals) and every HATES it. Not that the little half-cubes we had before were spacious, but the shared desks are tiny! You get about 3 feet to yourself an two little dividers between you and the next person. That's about enough room for a computer, phone, and a piece of paper. They also gave everyone a little rolling footstool instead of a chair. People are in pure hell now. The noise is unbearable, no one has any room to do actual work, and everyone is ready to kill the person next to them. Thankfully I'm in a locked lab where they decided not to do this. Sometimes I think the only reason I stay in my position is so I don't have to be in one of those open desk areas.

When they first floated the idea of an open floor plan the response of universally negative (like 200+ negative comments to one positive). The management said they'd take our concerns into consideration and then promptly installed the new desks a week later. Turns out they already had everything ordered and the whole 'tell us what you think' discussions were just a smokescreen to placate people.

  12. Am I The Only One... on David Letterman Returning to TV With Netflix Talk Show (hollywoodreporter.com) · · Score: 2

Who never found Letterman funny? I tried and tried to see what my friends saw in him (they all thought he was the be all and end all of comedy), but for whatever reason I never 'got it'. Maybe it was just his style of humor, but other than his top ten lists (which I admit were funny most of the time) most of his jokes just fell flat with me. It always seemed like he would make a random statement, look over to Paul (who would mumble something unintelligible), then Letterman would laugh like he just told the punchline and then stare at the camera for a bit making odd faces while the audience burst into laughter for a minute or two.

Not that I liked Leno or anything (please stop telegraphing the punchline for 5 min while you set up a painfully unfunny joke), but at least what he was doing seemed like an attempt at humor to me. Letterman always seemed to be an experiment to simulate a new form of humor that wasn't working.

  13. Back when Charter decided to almost double my monthly cable cost I told them to go pound sand and went with the only other option in my area: AT&T U-Verse. They told me that not only was it available in my area, but it would be significantly cheaper (if a little slower) so I said that sounded fine. First they send the guy out to hook me up and tell me that whoever laid the main cable trunk did it wrong and they would have to come back another time to hook me up, they never did. I called AT&T and they apologized and said they'd send a guy out. The second guy said that there was no way I could get AT&T at my house and the guys are corporate were smoking something. At this point I was more than a little pissed off since I had been without any sort of internet for almost a week so I called back to just cancel the whole damn thing when they absolutely 100% promised me that not only could I get AT&T at my location but that someone would show up promptly to hook me up. No one ever came. I ended up going back to Charter and getting a semi-decent deal where I only get 10 'non-basic' channels for a really low rate, but since I only watch about 10 non-basic channels it's not a big deal. The cost ends up being slightly cheaper than cord cutting and a lot more convenient.
