  1. Re:Inevitable on How To Beat Congress's Ban Of Humans On Mars · · Score: 1

As has already been pointed out, the summary is misleading. But you might as well get used to this idea. We will NEVER colonize the planets. As soon as the technology starts to get close, the scientists and environmentalists will stop it, so as to not contaminate a virgin environment. *Particularly* in the case of Mars, because scientists want to see if life already exists there (it doesn't, but they want to find out for sure).

    Uh... what?

I could also talk about the fact that very, very few will want to live on Mars because it's lifeless dead rock, but that's another subject. :) [hint: how many people try and live in Antarctica? And that's a hell of a lot more hospitable.]

If there were a place for me to sign up to live on Mars, I would most certainly get in line. I'll rent you my apartment while I'm gone.

  3. Aluminum Siding Not Effective on Cell Phone Jamming on the Rise · · Score: 1

Hmmm, I wonder if aluminum siding would be effective?

I live in a house that has aluminum siding. I also live immediately next door to a Verizon cell tower.

My personal GSM AT&T phone gets such a bad signal in the house, that I usually have to position the phone in some special and random way so that it gets a signal. I then use a bluetooth headset, because holding the phone to my ear means that I can't see the signal meter, which usually drops to zero as soon as I do this.

My Verizon Treo phone from work gets full signal at all times in the house. In fact, the signal is so strong, that the phone reports more bars than it actually has.

I'm curious to see if aluminum siding will block certain signals, and not others. I don't know much about the RF properties of aluminum.

Nobody wants to watch videos on their teeny tiny screens -- that's what the carriers (Verizon) thinks we want, or more accurately, that's what they think they can sell us as a feature of the phone. Same with ringtones, where you can BUY crappy ringtones, but can't add your own in a convenient way.

I got my fingers crossed that the iPhone will show people how good phones can be, and I really hope Google also makes some inroads there. Mobile phones have the potential to make sense, be easy to use, and have features that are important to the users. Instead, we get commoditized versions of what committees of marketing drones think will sell the phone. I want some sensemaking and innovation, not a 1960's phone plus blinking hip-hop videos.

And where the fuck are the nested tasks? I can't imagine that not a single phone, handheld, or PIM can't figure this out.

  9. Pittsburgh, PA on Why Municipal Wi-Fi Networks have Been Such a Flop · · Score: 1

Pittsburgh had a couple of attempts to build-out networks here in Pittsburgh. They failed, but that was pretty early on, and the equipment was kindof expensive. Being a WiFi guy here, I haven't been able to do very much on my own, but doing something like that is a big (financial) undertaking, and requires a bit of equipment. This guy has been installing Meraki devices in a couple of the neighborhoods, all by himself.

Now it seems to me, that a City like Pittsburgh could take the money normally spent on Verizon telecommunications services, and put that towards their own telecommunications infrastructure -- using WiFi, or anything else that is convenient, and actually have higher bandwidth, and less monthly outlay, and a superior service. I don't understand why people get freaked out over a City taking on something like this. Why would you rather pay Verizon hundreds of thousands of dollars per month, rather than spend that in a one-time equipment purchase? These networks can be used for anything, and there doesn't have to be only one.

Pittsburgh failed to create a WiFi network in '02 a while back. It cost a bunch of money for almost nothing done. Actually, some lady had her picture in the paper, and there was some hooplah for a day or two.

Then they hired some out-of-state company to install a little hotzone downtown, with two-hours of free access. This was after the other local players tried to bring some sense to whichever committee that was.

In fact, all of the local WiFi businesses in Pittsburgh have all left the city for the west coast, and other cities -- because they can't get any traction, or generate any local business.

Then this guy gets a bug up his ass, and starts installing Meraki boxes in his neighborhood. Didn't cost a fortune, didn't take forever, and he didn't have any help. 14. Yes it the hell is! on Chicago Cancels Municipal Wi-Fi Plan · · Score: 1

But City Wide WiFi nteworks? Why?

Hi. The Internet needs to be everywhere, and accessible in every and any way. WiFi is a very low cost solution for spreading the Internet around. Because the Internet has things like Wikipedia, and Make, and blogs, and maps, and train/bus schedules, and VOIP -- there is a need for the Internet to be ubiquitous. WiFi is a stone-knives-and-bearskins method of making the Internet available everywhere.

Why do you need WiFi near the dumpsters? That's where your systems administrators smoke cigarettes. Why does a City need WiFi? At the bear minimum, that should lessen the ammount paid to Verizon/GTE/SBC/etc every month. Municipal WiFi everywhere should directly equal less taxes -- except that it is against the law, at least here in Pennsyltuckey.

I thought the same thing. Monster emails are almost entirely spam anyways. I mean, they may have been relevant a few years ago (that's being charitable) but I've never had anything but crap from them.

Seconded. Monster is an advertising vehicle, not a job board -- not anymore, at least. I've been trolling Monster for about 7 years now, and while I have had many many interviews, I have received about 10,000 spam messages from recruiters from all over the world. I do UNIX systems administration.

Here's a fun trick, which I recommend for those trolling for recruiters:

[] Sign up with El Jobboard
[] Include superfluous keywords. I have a big block of text at the bottom with a ton of UNIX and systems keywords.
[] Update your resume every Monday or Tuesday. Insert a space. Remove a word. Anything to get your resume 'updated'.
[] Do the same with the other job boards, once a week.

You'll receive tons of email from various recruiters offering you jobs from anywhere and everywhere. Most of them are bunk, which I discuss at one of my projects (shameless plug) Recruiter-Rater. I get offers from modeling agencies, insurance sales, and other completely unrelated stuff. I passively milk the jobboards for new recruiters to post about, as do a few of our other regular users.

Otherwise, Craigslist is the way to go, if you are *actually* looking for work.

Lots of this and other kinds of treatment from the recruiting and HR sides, forced me to put together a web-based list of recruiters, Recruiter-Rater.

why does everything have to be illegal? are the artists who create the content having difficulty feeding their families on their meager earnings?

As the son of a musician, a musician myself, and in a word yes. Many artists live the 'starving artist' lifestyle because it is generally not a line of work with which you can make any money at all. The popular musicians we hear about are 1 in 5,000,000 that get very lucky with a record contract, or in attracting enough interested people to buy a record (painting, or other artwork), or in some other way 'get lucky' enough to support themselves.

The down side, is that none of these record companies have any interest in making sure the artist makes money. Even if you end-up with a record contract, you can still end-up broke like all of those other musicians we see in those VH-1 documentaries, Dick Dale, and many others.

This is why I don't buy records or albums from a record store anymore. Not only is there little of interest that I want to hear, but I know for a fact that those musicians aren't receiving much of the money I'd spend on an album anyway. I do wonder what Rob Zombie would have to say on this topic.
