    I have just returned a MacBook (sorry, my pockets ain't deep enough for the "pro"). I kept it for about a week. It was unbearable to use. The keyboard was between warm and hot (uncomfortably so). The bottom of the unit would give you a 2nd degree burn. A wooden desk over which the notebook set, got some discoloration due to the excessive heat. I would not leave this machine unattended in my house (risk of getting the fire department involved...). Overall a very negative experience.

And where is the second mouse button? :-) Close, but no cigar for me.

    Exactly! I lived in Brasil in the late 70's/early 80's when the petroleum crisis was at its maximum and Brasil's economy was growing fast. Millions of cars were converted/made for ethanol use. It was a huge success, and it saved Brasil billions of $$ in imports and generated a well developed new industry. The idea that ethanol production is "energy negative" is nonsense in general (it may be that corn is not a good source, but I still doubt it). One interesting ancdote from that era: as alcohol based cars started to appear, so did bumper stickers that said "movido a alcool... so o motorista" (alcohol powered... driver only).

    You are right! I am corrected... Here is the proof:

    1000 families. 50% chance of GIRL

    250 have a boy + a girl and stop ---> +250 g, + 250 b

    62.5 have 3 boys + a girl and stop ---> + 63.5 g + 187 b

    etc

    N_{boys} = N \sum_{k=1}^\infty (k-1)*2^{-k} = N (for a population of N families, with N\rightarrow \infty, precisely N boys will be born)

    N_{girls} = N \sum_{k=1}^\infty (1)*2^{-k} = N (again the same number!)

    So, in conclusion, for a large sample, you will end up with each family (on average) having 1 boy and one girl...

  23. Re:correlation and causations on Engineers Have More Sons, Nurses More Daughters · · Score: 4, Insightful
    The reason, if any, could be as follows: a couple with more "masculine traits" may stop having children after they get a boy, whereas a "more feminine" couple stops having children after having a girl. Lets enumerate the possibilities.

    For the "masculine couple" (please note that the following are not equal in probability!):

    BOY, stop

    GIRL, BOY, stop

    GIRL, GIRL, BOY, stop

    etc.

    A similar (substituting BOY and GIRL) sequence can be made for the "feminine" couple.

    It is easy to see how this would lead to more BOYS or GIRLS in each respective case (on average).

    This is one possible explanation of cause.

    It is disingenuous how these reports are made. Essentially you have the CS departments wanting an excuse to ask for more $$ and power coupled with IT industry which just wants cheaper labor... It plainly sucks! About 15 years ago there was a similar report on the shortage of scientists (physicists in peculiar)... in 1997 I graduated with a Ph.D. in the field, with a rather sad panorama regarding job opportunity (you know things are bad when all universities start having "alternative jobs for XXX" seminars...).

    Anyway, things worked OK for me (I'm a tenure track faculty member now), but these reports of how few people are in different areas are completely bogus.

    If there's a single are in which there are no such reports and where the professional associations act as cartels to keep their own salaries at astronomical levels is in medicine. Come on! Everywhere else in the world medicine is affordable and of reasonable quality and medical doctors make a decent living. The US has by far the worst medical system I've ever experienced (having lived in 5 countries already...). Doctors are overpaid and pedantic, preventive medicine is nonexistent, and 1/3 of the population has no real access to it... Go figure...
