red hat's default behavior is to install urpmi.

I did not know that. Have they been using urpmi for long? What versions? According to the lists of packages included with RH 9.0 - Redhat - urpmi is nowhere to be found. So I imagine it would be a bit difficult to be there as the default setting. Googling for "urpmi, redhat" also turns up no relevant results right away, (fsck spending time looking at more than two google results pages), other than to suggest that as of 8.0 urpmi was not included in the distro. I would like RH a tad bit more if they did install urpmi by default. Same goes for Mandrake if they would enable slocate by default, but that's just me. As for what is more useful... urpmi IMO. If you mean what distro is more useful based on what is installed by default and whatnot then I would say Mandrake.

True, but urpmi and rpmdrake make upgrading and installing rpms pretty damn easy. Just configure your urpmi sources right and you're set. I know that you can setup a similar package management system on RH, (apt, alien, urpmi?), but Mandrake has a nice one by default.

Strange, I had never heard of this "GNU OS" before the article and your post. So everything that is in any distro, and released under the GPL is part of the GNU OS? Nomenclature-Hijacking. It's a losing battle and merely reflects badly on those on the side that is seeking change. It smacks of indignation, and jumping up and down seeking attention for attentions sake. I respect their contributions, which are many, but constantly reminding us about them, and attempting to get their name in front of Linux, has soured the attitudes of quite a few of us.

An honest mistake, but it would have been nice if he actually had tried them out before spouting off about how cool all the "browsers" were. Although with the massive amount of stuff that comes with a Mandrake install it is certainly understandable that a newbie wouldn't run everything.

Quite OT, but guess what? 3.0 Woody still uses the 2.2 kernel by default. Although you can pass it an option at boot to use a 2.4 kernel. Why? It's the "stable" branch of the Debian project. Most stuff has been debugged pretty well and whatnot. It's done that way so you can have a "stable" OS. If you want a new kernel and the latest KDE it's pretty simple to upgrade, just apt-get and such. apt is almost as good as emerge ;) End standard Debian rant.
