Another story that I seem to recall: In the 1970's, when a Russian spy plane was forced to land near Japan, it was taken quietly into an American base, dismantled, and sent back to Russia in pieces two/three weeks later.
It's a game out there - nobody plays nice if they can get away with it.

Why Community Matters

why would we waste time reading left wing arguements for 'community' which we have already intellectually discounted years ago ?
Not just discounted, but intellectually discounted? That's a harsh burn, innit?:)
However, my attitude to this is 'So What?' The lives of millions and their living conditions is a lot more important than the continued existance of some obscure far away plant or animal. I only wish the statist environmentalists could see that.
Ouch. First of all, if Norway and Canada are going to suffer the effects of increased pollution cross-border, not only 'obscure' plants and animals will be affected. The 'lives of millions' will also be worsened by respiratory problems, a damaged environment (ever seen an acid lake?) and many other toxins.
I'm assuming that you spent your childhood in the city or the suburbs, never got or took the chance to go out and be in the real outdoors. Many who grew up with different philosophies disagree with yours, and have many valid points. There's no fundamental reason that both people and nature can't coexist except perhaps for laziness and fear of change.
Are they trying to damp the insatiable demand of North Americans for new software? What's with the Europe-only release?
Good thing the trans-Atlantic cable is watercooled.
It's a bit misleading that none of those statistics were scaled by the popularity of each respective OS... Linux and NT do not have equal marketshares, therefore a straight-up tally of intrusions is misleading. Much as "Murders per 1,000,000 persons per year" can show that Canada is a safer place to live than the USA (flame on!), "Intrusions per 1,000 computers per month" would be a more accurate and informative measure of security.
It's better than "The yellow pie looks bigger", at least.
I think that this is much more likely another attempt to say, "Gee whiz, it's tough being Microsoft, we're constantly having to innovate and compete, don't break us up, please!" Linux is certainly a threat to NT/2000, but the 98% of home users who have Windows aren't going to go anywhere soon. Let's keep one eye on Redmond (isn't that always the case?), but I think that this press announcement is more DOJ appeal than anything.
Though this is going to come out a bit whiny, I have to say that I was a little bit saddened when I saw the trailer for "The Emperor's New Groove". It reminded me of Mel Gibson's "The Patriot", which completely glossed over the horrors of slavery in the South during the civil war (referring to Mel's black slave as his "employee", har har).
The Spanish conquistadores completely eradicated the great Inca and Maya civilazations through war, horrendous plagues (like smallpox), and rape. On one occasion, the conquistadore Pizarro captured the Incan king Atahuallpa, ransomed him for a large dining room's worth of gold and silver, then killed him anyway. (It's all told in a great book, Guns Germs and Steel.
"So, it's just a cartoon, lighten up!"
I know it's just a cartoon. I think that infusing our children with a candy-coated, competely inaccurate view of the past is irresponsible. I'm not advocating that Disney put the destruction of the Native peoples by systematic warfare (Pocahontas anyone?) in their next movie, I just think that maybe they ought to pick more positive subject matter. Like Transformers. They're cool.
Man now lives in more different environments than virtually any other creature. We live in polar cold, in sweltering tropical heat, in deserts and in forests and on Himalayan mountains. And most of those places have running water and Internet connections.
I think you're completely missing the point. Living in the Antarctic involves the use of enormous amounts of resources extracted from land in more hospitable areas of the planet. Food cannot be grown, and must be flown in. Heating is provided by gasoline, which is drilled from the ground elsewhere, and flown in. We are not adapting ourselves to the environment of the polar regions, we are simply using up our resources elsewhere in a very inefficient manner.
Of course, there's the Inuit who lived in the arctic quite sustainably and happily for many years before they were decimated by disease and cultural destruction. But they weren't concerned with Internet connections.
The solution, as far as I'm concerned, is in nuclear fusion.
That sounds eerily like what was spouted back in the 1950's about the promises of nuclear technology. How about another element of a solution: cutting back on our gluttonous desire for energy? Surely one don't NEED to drive a SUV, or play golf in an artifically irrigated desert.
I want to know just how the hell you can inadvertently put up a wall.
It's 9:05. The phone is ringing. You have a trowel in your hand. What do you do?

One in nine South Africans have AIDS. South africa has a budget of no more than $50 per person alotted for healthcare. $20,000 per person per year was the going rate.
It's so true what they say in commercials about how Glaxo is working towards saving lives! I'm so glad I live in a society where 'people matter'.
(Sorry, couldn't resist)
"To be determined."
I'll be sure to try that line out next time I go south to buy cigarettes...

Mr. Freeman, so good to see you today... You're wanted in the Tevatron laboratory right away!

Actually, Microsoft gave at least $50,000 to both major parties in this election. Note that I said major.
We already have a free market in privacy!! Why, just the other day, I was offered 10,000 guaranteed email addresses for a trivial sum!
(not keeping up with the joneses)

Reverse psychology, works every time...
I'm waiting until I can buy a large decal of Calvin pissing on an Intel logo...

Though perhaps it was a bad one.
Just as in everything else, now it's US First. Egocentric Americans. :)
One of these days, when a car alarm goes off for absolutely no reason, I'd love to be able to retaliate.... *evil grin*
Creative, RCA and Philips won't be happy if noone buys their new mp3 CD-R discmans.
