    I had an old VTECH toy laptop, with a black-and-white screen and a little ball mouse. On it were some games, some "learning programs", a word processor, and a full BASIC interpreter. It was kid-safe and used good old C batteries, but it was also a great introduction to computing. You can get the modern equivalent at this site, but they appear to have dropped the BASIC functionality, which makes it relatively useless. You can probably find a used one on eBay, though...

    $20 as reasonable? Um. No. Does it cost them $20 extra to press the "open ports" button? I mean, if I want to have an ssh server running on my home machine, my ISP shouldn't be telling me that I can't!

    Except opening a zillion more instances of IE will do the following:
    • Eventually, group on your taskbar, adding an extra click
    • Eat all your system resources
    • Make it impossible to close all open websites with one click
    • Revert you to the world where CSS 2.x was never released as a standard :)

    I'd guess that it requires .NET because it was written in C#? Ya know, that C-like language with built-in garbage collection, delegates, a shitload of built-in types and easy access to WinForms? Yeah, that one.

    You missed the point. He's not saying that he can't run an old app on a new system- he's saying that he can't run a new app on an old system. If you know of a 16-bit DOS system that can run a new game with DirectX9 as a requirement, well, you're a very unique person. :D

    Good point. Let's rebuild all binaries so that they only use kernel hooks from the 2.0 series, gtk 1.2, old-style X font strings, glibc 2.0 and software OpenGL...

    There is, in fact, a reason software has moved on since then. Do you also expect all Mac software to work on both OS X and Classic? All BeOS software to work on both NetServer and BONE? :)

    4) server-side extensions (like complex widgets running on the server)
    -- That's why we have toolkits. X is a Protocol.

    5) a standard widget toolkit
    -- Why would you want that? I hate Qt, lots of people hate gtk+. I wouldn't want to have to pick one...

    6) data types (for OLE and global cut-n-paste/drag-n-drop)
    -- We have XDND (a decent drag-n-drop implimentation) and copy-and-paste between every X app I've ever used...

    The one thing I hate -most- on the entire Internet is Macromedia Flash. People make whole websites using a proprietary plugin that doesn't even work on a goodish number of OS's! Animated SVG can't come soon enough! Or, better yet, people understanding good old XHTML. Here's a good example:

    At my local high school, I happen to know the "web team". The webmaster doesn't know any HTML. Not a bit. He couldn't even make the equivalent of a hello world. But he's the webmaster. Why? Because he knows Flash and Dreamweaver.

    My only response is argh!

    1) ext2 doesn't fragment, so no need to defrag
    2) You don't need to release anything under the GPL unless it links against GPL (not LGPL) libraries, like qt
    3) Your lawyer is a shithead.

    A class of 30 attentive, happy students is fine. But where I live, about half the students don't speak English. Most of the non-English speakers speak Portugese, the rest various Asian dialects. Nobody wants to learn. The teachers get paid slightly more than minimum wage, meaning that we have the worst of the crop- the least qualified, the least happy to teach. "Teaching to the test" (MCAS) is the standard, is required. All teachers need to have MCAS standards on the walls, and need to teach towards an MCAS standard every day. This is not a conducive environment for learning. Moreover, it is an impossible environment for a large student-to-teacher ratio. I imagine the situation is not much better elsewhere...

    My S-E T637 can go for a week without charging too. And it has a color screen and a camera. I do use the camera, usually for taking pictures of everyday stuff that I wouldn't bother to take a picture of with a regular camera- too much bother. But with the phone, well, the camera's already on my belt, so why not use it? And some of the pictures are pretty good, too.
