I had an old VTECH toy laptop, with a black-and-white screen and a little ball mouse. On it were some games, some "learning programs", a word processor, and a full BASIC interpreter. It was kid-safe and used good old C batteries, but it was also a great introduction to computing. You can get the modern equivalent at this site, but they appear to have dropped the BASIC functionality, which makes it relatively useless. You can probably find a used one on eBay, though...
$20 as reasonable? Um. No. Does it cost them $20 extra to press the "open ports" button? I mean, if I want to have an ssh server running on my home machine, my ISP shouldn't be telling me that I can't!
I'd guess that it requires.NET because it was written in C#? Ya know, that C-like language with built-in garbage collection, delegates, a shitload of built-in types and easy access to WinForms? Yeah, that one.
You missed the point. He's not saying that he can't run an old app on a new system- he's saying that he can't run a new app on an old system. If you know of a 16-bit DOS system that can run a new game with DirectX9 as a requirement, well, you're a very unique person.:D
Good point. Let's rebuild all binaries so that they only use kernel hooks from the 2.0 series, gtk 1.2, old-style X font strings, glibc 2.0 and software OpenGL...
Honestly. If you can't be bothered to upgrade your OS in two years, then it's time to learn the wonderful command
make
There is, in fact, a reason software has moved on since then. Do you also expect all Mac software to work on both OS X and Classic? All BeOS software to work on both NetServer and BONE?:)
1) real alpha blending
-- Has this with XCOMPOSITE
2) device independence
-- PostScript/similar output would be nice, yes. Maybe we'll "impliment" it from Mac OS one of these days, like Windows did.
3) clear-type
-- Has this with FreeType, had it before MS had ClearType
4) server-side extensions (like complex widgets running on the server)
-- That's why we have toolkits. X is a Protocol.
5) a standard widget toolkit
-- Why would you want that? I hate Qt, lots of people hate gtk+. I wouldn't want to have to pick one...
6) data types (for OLE and global cut-n-paste/drag-n-drop)
-- We have XDND (a decent drag-n-drop implimentation) and copy-and-paste between every X app I've ever used...
The one thing I hate -most- on the entire Internet is Macromedia Flash. People make whole websites using a proprietary plugin that doesn't even work on a goodish number of OS's! Animated SVG can't come soon enough! Or, better yet, people understanding good old XHTML. Here's a good example:
At my local high school, I happen to know the "web team". The webmaster doesn't know any HTML. Not a bit. He couldn't even make the equivalent of a hello world. But he's the webmaster. Why? Because he knows Flash and Dreamweaver.
1) ext2 doesn't fragment, so no need to defrag
2) You don't need to release anything under the GPL unless it links against GPL (not LGPL) libraries, like qt
3) Your lawyer is a shithead.
We'll overpay for software that will rely on unencrypted Internet transmissions and will use HACKME as its Hostname. To maintain it, we'll be instituting a draft, as covered by the Selective Serf Act.
No meaningful comments yet, and the server is already loading slower than my old Pentium 133. And, of course, they subdivided the article into 16 pages. That way I can wait 5 minutes each... Ahh the joys of ASP.
No less stable here on Windows XP SP2, Windows XP SP1, or Gentoo Linux ~x86. If anyone ever makes an update to the BeOS version, I'll report on it too.
Even though the Puritans settled in New England, which is the most Democratic (blue) area of the country, and which also includes some of the most rural (Maine, Vermont) areas of the country... Good logic.
ARGH. Stupid HTML line break requirement... Fixed:
1) We don't have the source
2) If you are seriously proposing that WMP is as good as Winamp 5, I want some of whatever you're smoking.
3) It's still nice to know it's still around, even if it is a commodity,

A class of 30 attentive, happy students is fine. But where I live, about half the students don't speak English. Most of the non-English speakers speak Portugese, the rest various Asian dialects. Nobody wants to learn. The teachers get paid slightly more than minimum wage, meaning that we have the worst of the crop- the least qualified, the least happy to teach. "Teaching to the test" (MCAS) is the standard, is required. All teachers need to have MCAS standards on the walls, and need to teach towards an MCAS standard every day. This is not a conducive environment for learning. Moreover, it is an impossible environment for a large student-to-teacher ratio. I imagine the situation is not much better elsewhere...
My S-E T637 can go for a week without charging too. And it has a color screen and a camera. I do use the camera, usually for taking pictures of everyday stuff that I wouldn't bother to take a picture of with a regular camera- too much bother. But with the phone, well, the camera's already on my belt, so why not use it? And some of the pictures are pretty good, too.
Yes, amplifiers are definitely the most important uses of vacuum tubes. I can't think of a single more important use in all of history that I would put down on the article had I written it...
This detects TightVNC as "Remote Control Spyware". Huh. Interesting piece of software they made.

I find it very hard to make a laptop with a 15" CRT. Or a desktop motherboard. Did you even read the title of the article?

My only response is argh!I respond that the survey blatantly contradicts what I've seen in the real world and is thus worthless. Thank you for asking.

That just about covers it...

Perhaps you should read the ewarns that beep loudly when played?
