Im quite unclear on Bolkestein's motivation for that comment. Opening up the code to allow interoperability will not take away the fact that the code is Microsoft's, so Copyright is preserved. The commission isn't (as far as I can tell) letting competitor's simply copy MS's code so they can interoperate, but rather allow the code to be shown so they can code their own products to allow cleaner interoperability with MS's code. Any since patents are required to be published anyway, and need to be licenced, the patent comments is a non sequitur.
Well, Bolkestein is no stupid man but his intelligence certainly does NOT lie in technology matters. He's the former head-honcho for the dutch neo-liberals the VVD , though now they're sounding more like conservatives IMO.
This is the same moro^H^H^H^H person who tried again and again to persuade his fellow EP-shills to vote FOR the european software patents "because it's good for business". (WHAT business dickhead? euro-SMEs or big-shot, patent-heavy corps like Microsoft, Adobe, BSA et al.?)
I seriously think he's on the pay for the above-mentioned parties.
Metal bands love the term too:

Why so much attrition against Windoze users?

MPlayer 1.0Pre1 Is Here
·
· Score: 4, Insightful
I sense a LOT of 1337ist attitudes (grudges?) against the idea of using Mplayer on Win32. Why? What's with that? What ever happened to the ideal of free software for everyone INCLUDING convincing the unwashed Windoze masses of the superiority of FOSS?
....which then begs the question why the EP needs another implementation. A BSA-made directive of all things. According to the main speaker (FFII) at the Brussel protest, apparently these directives are a PITA to write because of the extensive use of formal wordings (lawyer-speak), so these euro-shills want to push it through to make believe they've actually been working.
I don't understand why people buy Dells and HP's and the like. Don't other countries have Windows-less laptops? Here in Holland it's not that difficult to find 'em.
If you look at the front page of the dutch computer chain Computer-Land here: http://www.computer-land.nl/...you see they offer all their laptops "EXCL. Windows"
Not having a Dell/HP/IBM logo on it doesn't seem like a huge disadvantage.
My thoughts exactly! This is just TOO FREAKING easy.
They must be angling the community for bits of info they can use against IBM/GPL/Linux/world+dog
I smell a rat^H^H^H dead whale.
Then again, those multi-vitamins sure have helped me evade hangovers.
I've been drinking 1 tablet after booze/before sleep and I've been hangover-free for nearly a month now. \m/
(Remember, you need lotsa water too, but that never quite helped my poor head that much.)
On-topic: cut out the snacks and sugary sodas while you're on the job and eat carrots or some fruit.
...convinced me to recognise a higher power.
Open your heart, my brother, god is waiting for you.
"Deja-hear" this time.
My dear lil' brother of 21 threw himself off his 5-story student dorm complex on Feb 2nd, mere weeks after continuously trying to convince of this same sh*t you posted. He'd turn 22 last March 27th.
I have no words to describe my disgust at people who utter this pseudo-religious excrement.
This post might be lame as hell bu this is a freaky coincidence...
Just yesterday I was thinking about how hard DN3D rocked when I played it around '97. How I miss the "fun&laughter" factor in PFS games today. How DN4E is gonna be eternal vaporware and what if DN3D source code would be opened up ("YEAH-IN-YOUR-DREAMS" I thought). I mean I didn't even think about GPL but prolly any old variant of open code licenses.
So whoa, now I read the topic and I'm thinking "this is weird!".
Cue "Twilight Zone" intro jingle.
To put this into perspective: I'm more of a 1 game-hour-a-week guy so I'm not obsessed with gaming.
Around the corner where I live there's a shop that sells these. NO WINDOWS as standard, like good Dutch custom the OS is an OPTION in the pricelists!
IEEE1394, USB2, PCMCIA etc.
It IS a Dutch company but I bet they'll deliver the goods to you anywhere with FedEx.
Worth a try IMO.
"Would anyone want to use MS WMP in Linux?"
Scenario #1 in my mind:
Linux grows and grows -especially on the desktop- and this WMP-support allows it to be more acceptable to the mainstream computing public as now they have another "obstacle" taken out of their way.
(I see many sites switching to WMP-only or mixed WMP/RealMedia or mixed WMP/QuickTime)
Scenario #2: Because WMP becomes that much more less of a stubling block "on the desktop" it becomes more acceptable for websites to carry WMP.
(Do they ever get angry mail from users not being able to access WMPs?)
Thus paving they way for a WMP (and intrusive DRM)-takeover of yet more media. In time trickling down to (portable)hardware (e.g. see today's VIA anouncement about their 3 new CODEC-chips).
Hmmmm... I'm leaning more towards "curse" for now.
