Wrong! You can easily unhide the hidden folder that contains your mp3s and copy them from the hard drive via firewire. That's some fancy copy protection! A hidden folder!

The reason they filed for chapter 11 is that their business is running well except for financial distress on loans that they've had for a while now. This means that if they can manage to get rid of their loans, the company will be doing fine. It's worth helping any company break out of financial distress as long as the company would be profitable otherwise. This is fairly basic economics.

I don't know what school you went to, but it sounds like you should have picked another. My school focused on concepts like data structures, algorithm analysis, and computational theory. Many of these classes didn't have any programming in them. The classes that had programming used java, c, lisp, or haskell, but java most of the time. My school is very up to date. Also, if you don't use 90% of what you've learned, you must not be a very good programmer or your school didn't teach you very useful things. Every day, I use most of the skills that my school helped teach me.

Sorry, I wasn't arguing against your whole comment. I should have quoted the piece that I don't think would work:
...you could download the source for free but possibly have to pay to download a compiled or pacakged application. I was just trying to say that I doubt anyone would pay to download the binaries, because someone else could compile everything and let people download it. I wasn't suggesting that you can't make money selling boxed versions.

I think that if a company was doing this and had significantly good software, someone would simply compile everything, repackage it, and distribute it for free. If the software wasn't much better than the rest (ie a typical distribution) people would simply avoid it and use another.

  7. My experiences with DARE on Has D.A.R.E Been Effective? · · Score: 1
The biggest problem with the DARE program is the ambiguity and deception of the whole thing. The "E" at the end of DARE stands for education, but the program really lacks truthful education about drugs. In thinking back to 6th grade, I realize that at the time, I hardly knew what these so-called "drugs" were. All I knew was that lots of adults mentioned them a lot and said they were bad and ruined your life. They listed off various drugs like marijuana, cocaine, and heroin, but never explained the differences between them or the different consequences. The clumped all drugs("alcohol is also a drug") into the same category and implied that they are equally evil and bad for you. They also equated one-time experimental use with complete addiction. When I finished the DARE program, I think it only left me with a vague, slightly hesitant curiosity about drugs.

I think that a true education about the different consequences of different drugs and different amounts of drug use would be much more effective. In the long run more kids might smoke marijuana, but I think that fewer kids will even consider using something as addictive and dangerous as heroin.

Sorry, I don't mean to be nit-picky, but you mixed up the candidates with their positions. Browne is the libertarian and McReynolds is the Socialist. Browne wants to end the income tax, not McReynolds. His view (and my view, being that I'm also libertarian) is that when people have more money, because of no income tax, they will be more able to afford private schools that are better than the public schools which the gov't can provide. Just wanted to clarify that, being that I support Browne and his campaign.
