    When a person gets to be 40 or 50, he wants to be able to look back on his life so far and say "I've done some nifty things and I'm proud of what I've done. I'm happy." Someone who's spent most of his spare time viewing porn is unlikely to be able to look back with pride, unlikely to be as happy.

    At age 20, being able to look forward beyond that pretty nude and plan for long term happiness provides the reason to break that addiction.

    The claim that "democratic socialism" works in Sweden was to an extent true because Swedes had an extraordinary work ethic. "Democratic socialism" has eroded that ethic and Sweden is eating its stored wealth. It no longer works.

    When life begins (began, actually) is irrelevant to this discussion. Life began billions of years ago and has existed in a continuum ever since. We are part of that continuum.

    What is relevant is when a human individual comes into existence and (as another poster stated) is legally recognized.

    My preference is that this time should be at birth, but I think good arguments can be made for as early as 4 or 5 months after conception.

    Attempting to apply the concept of rights to a being with a neural system inferior to a fish would be silly if it were not vicious.

    The CO2 and H2O products are not toxic. The nitrate salts I don't know about, but they are likely to be useful as fertilizer. Even if they are toxic, would you rather have them concentrated in a puddle or floating around in the air you breathe?

    If power lines were designed to produce lots of ions, they'd produce lots of ozone, which is not good to breathe regularly.

    Titanium dioxide has been used in paint for a long time, and is one of the two chemicals most used as a pigment in white paint. (The other is zinc oxide.) Producing a bit more than we already are is not likely to be a significant problem.

    The oils, like the homebuilders, have a long history of boom-and-bust. Knowledge of that history is restraining the prices of these high growth remarkably low PEG companies. For the oils, there is some reason to believe that "this time it will be different", as inexpensive resources become scarce. Time will tell.

    The dollar is worth about 1/10th of what it was worth in 1950, but typical stock price is not much changed. A stock price of a few hundred dollars is reasonable, and appeals to people who want to avoid careless holders of their investment.

    Google's net income for the most recent quarter is $369 million. Time Warner's is $963 million. Time Warner isn't growing sales (although it is becoming more profitable); Google is doubling annually. IF Google can continue growing so fast, it will exceed TWX's net income in less than 1.5 years. By the usual evaluation for growth stocks, GOOG is undervalued compared to TWX.

    This is not to say that Google won't fall or fail, but that by some (not unreasonable) measures, Google is fairly valued.

    Throttle depression is not a good measure. Some cars open the throttle a little regardless of driver input whenever the compressor engages.

    A car air conditioner pulls at least 2 HP, and often as much as 5 HP. Most alternators provide much less. This implies that the Peltier devices are going to have a lot less power available to them, and aren't going to be able to perform as well.

    Typical air conditioners run at efficiencies of 200%-300% or better, the Peltier devices I've used are about 50%. Unless these kids have done something really outstanding, the numbers just don't work out for this being an effective system.

    A brake helps, by redirecting some of the gas sideways instead of forward. I suppose it could do even better by directing it backwards, but who wants a burst of hot gas and gunpowder residue directed at their face? I think the effect of a brake is probably minor (I'm no expert), so essentially, you're correct.

    Your comment that the sun is the source of both gasoline and ethanol is pointless, like saying that all forms of energy use are less than 100% efficient. The valid question is whether more useful energy is available from the manufactured fuel than would be available if the fuel were not manufactured. That standard must be met, otherwise the true price is infinite.

    I'd guess that any monitor that only accepts analog in ought to be OK. What DRM is trying to prevent is intercepting an unencrypted digital signal.

    A government that fails to make such plans (even if it has no intention of acting on such plans) is failing to protect its own populace.

    Property rights, like all rights, are yours (in essence) because you are a human being. Governments should recognize and protect those rights. The failure of a government to recognize and protect a right does not make it "not a right."

    Many countries threaten to invalidate the patents for drugs held by US companies unless the companies sell the drugs at slightly above incremental cost. These countries - that's you, Canada, Germany, France, et. al. - are engaging in extortion.
