    As a side note, the U.S. could have put up the first satellite https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redstone_(rocket_family) but Eisenhower's foolish insistence on going with a "civilian" rocket prevented that.

    Similarly, the U.S. could have put the first man in space, as back then space was considered 50 miles and the X-15 was capable of 50 miles altitude.

    Many products that are THE top killers of humans are perfectly legal, because they create massive revenue and perpetuate death.

    The message that you're trying to hide is that you think you should be the dictator who tells everyone what they may or may not do.

    Interesting point. Pipe smokers either tend to be a certain type of personality or pipe-smoking makes them that sort of person. Pipe smoking requires more ritual and skill than cigars, cigarettes, snuff, or chaw. By requiring more attention to getting the fire going and maintained, pipe smokers tend to be more contemplative people, more likely to think through actions before acting. (When smoking was allowed in public places, security guards didn't have to worry much about pipe smokers stealing things [or so I've heard].} Generally, pipe smokers don't inhale, pipe smoke is cooler than cigarette and cigar smoke, and a lot of the poisons get deposited inside the stem.

    A minimum wage earning single mom working double shifts represents what portion of the population?

    Even with quick, cheap breakfasts there is a range of choices. Oatmeal is better than pop tarts. Cheerios or Wheaties in milk are better than chocolate frosted sugar bombs. Orange juice or coffee is better than Old Overholt or Schlitz.

  10. The sugar spike of a glazed or filled doughnut on an empty stomach is in itself harmful. Damage accumulates slowly.

    Schools based on lectures and books, regardless of the age level, should be considered "dead man walking". Hands-on teaching (carpentry and surgery) will still require a hands-on approach for a couple of decades.

    Public education takes up about half of state and local taxes. Think of all the money that would be freed up to do useful things if students were taught by computer programs. Teachers could do something productive for a change.

    Standalone commodity used book stores are toast. The six nearest me have all gone out of business in the last three years. Anything that remains will be either collectibles, or a smaller part of a store selling new books.

    Toys-R-Us is for all practical purposes gone. It was losing money and had no hope of ever being profitable again.

  20. Democrats frequently run for office claiming they're going to make it tough to legally own guns, and in some places (NYC, Chicago, Massachusetts) they've succeeded. The decision to buy a gun when a popular Democrat candidate proposes new restrictions is not irrational or hysterical, and doesn't need gun company publicity to make it happen.

    Seizure of guns has happened in the U.S.. It's the natural step following mandatory registration.

    Gun rights increased during the Obama administration because of US Supreme Court decisions and state legislative action.

    No matter how nice the multi-use furnishings in your compact city apartment are, a compact apartment sucks in comparison to a big house on a couple of acres in the country. I'm glad you have your delusion and I encourage you to share it with as many people as possible: more room for me out here where life is pleasant, away from the squalor and trash and noise in the city.

    The number of gas stations has been declining for decades, due to rising efficiency, self-serve stations, and pumps that accept credit cards. Service stations - places that sell gas and repair cars - seem to have declined the most, while gas-and-snack places have risen in comparison.
