    I don't think I have ever in my life sent in a warranty/registration card.

    I have never needed to either.

    To my knowlege, failure to turn in the warranty card in no way lessens any warranty coverage you might be entitled to, should you need it.

    Of course companies will not notify you personally should your anonymous product turn out to be a deathtrap, so keep an eye out for product recalls.

    Now while it doesn't seem like a good deal, the calculus of $200 coupon + $349 unlocked device does come out to less than $600 MSRP, plus you might save sales tax on the $200.

    You would have to be pretty lame not to know the ebay item is a coupon, so the only question is what is the coupon worth? The market will tell.

    Like most "news" today, the article says Bill Gates is probably the most spammed person in the world - but gives no frame of reference.

    For example, how much spam does the Whitehouse get?

    Do they cite the number of spams the average person gets? There is nothing other than the obvious in that article.

    The article might have well said it is probably cold in Antartica too.

    I don't know if these "realistic" crime shows are inspiring budding young scientists, but it sure is educational for non-stupid criminals (and although there are few of those percentage-wise, it is a large absolute number).

    I sure have cleaned up my evidence-leaving ways, seeing all the good tips on these reality shows.

    Heck, if the witness-relocation program didn't keep moving me about, I'd be caught by now, for sure!

    This is not quite the same as "for yourself", but it can still work.

    The downside is you need to find a client, and you need to do what THEY want.

    The upside is that you still work for yourself, set your own hours, work from home, etc.

    As far as Patents and stuff, make sure your contract indemnifies you - after all the stuff belongs to your client.

    Some enlightened clients might even pay you to write open source software that fits their needs.

    One or more of the above sentences applies to me, so I know lone programmers can make a living, being, well, almost lone programmers.

    Sorry to reply to my own post, but I just wanted to point out that raw DV is about 12GB an hour, so most folks who have video of their kids can expect to want to store 500GB of home video with no problem.

    Super-redundant error-tolerant copy software anyone? I sure want it to tbe open-source, so that I can trust it will survive for a few years.
