  1. Re:Cheating? on Civilization III Is Out, And It Rocks · · Score: 1

Well I hope the AI is not such a cop-out as Civ II. The only thing they did to make it hard was to ensure that every other civilization would gang up on you the minute you showed any promise.

I stopped playing it because of it. You always knew the ending: Everyone declares was against you.

  2. Hello Challenger? on Hydrogen-Powered Aircraft == Anti-Terrorist Device? · · Score: 1
Are we forgetting the huge explosion that consumed the heat shielded Challenger?

How about the way the Hindenburg's superstructure collapsed in the heat of the fire?

  3. Are we losing control? on W3C Looking for More Patent Feedback · · Score: 3, Interesting
Over the years the World Wide Web has evolved into the greatest free speech soap box the world has ever known. Vast amount of information and opinions are available for all to see.

This proposal to introduce patents into WWW standards greatly concerns the future of the Web. What will happen to the great soap box? Will I have to pay royalties to post my web page? Will I be forced to use a certain OS and web browser to view some web sites and then maybe another browser for others? Will my hard drive become clogged with endless browser plugins. Each allowing me to view separately patented web technology? I see the possibility of greater costs to the web users. I may have to pay greater software and ISP costs.

If the World Wide Web is to become the media of the future. What will happen if large coporations have the patents to control its content? Does everyone still feel that their voice will always be heard?

Anyone know how we can block these requests?

  6. Re:Guilty until proven innocent? Gimme a break on Convicted by the Movie Cops · · Score: 2, Insightful
Yes they targeted the wrong user but:

The MPAA and the ISP did not admit any wrong doing or mistake on their part. The made the guy sign a document stating he would not traffic copywrited materials. As far as they are concerned he did it.

Suppose your cable tv was disconnected because the cable company was told that you were making illegal copies of movies and selling them? What would you do? You are accused of being a pirate and the only way you can get your cable service back is to promise not to do it again. But, you never did it in the first place.

Is that just an invoncenience? How would you feel?

  7. Lack of sales? You mean lack of effort. on Dell Drops Linux on Desktops and Laptops · · Score: 1
Of course sales would be low if they don't advertise. If I go to Dell.ca and configure a laptop linux isn't even a choice in the OS section.

I remember when Dell first starting offering Linux. I wanted to buy two servers. I called Dell, told them I wanted to run Linux but, I wanted to check compatablilty. "Can you tell me what IDE, SCSI, and graphics contorllers you use on brand X server?" The sales rep said he'd call me back. He never did.

  8. CPU is not the bottle neck. on Sun Releases Grid 5.2 for Linux · · Score: 1

These days I don't think the bottle neck for the average computer network is the cpu. More likely FSB or the PCI bus. Disk access is also a bottle neck but no as much these days.

  9. Speakers and Power protection on What Audio System Powers Your Home Theater? · · Score: 1

Yes Speakers are subjective. I am suprised how many people dislike Bose. I like the sound from them but I do not have a trained ear. Perhaps I've been had by marketing .

As for power protection. Definitely buy something good. I had a cheap one once. I moved into a condo, plugged my amp in and heard a "pop" from inside. Blew the transformer because the previous owners had not closed the neutral when they took a light fixture with them. Cost me $150 to repair.

  10. Speakers are Key on What Audio System Powers Your Home Theater? · · Score: 2

Make sure you get good speakers. They are the most important part. You may want to consider budgeting up to %50 of your cost on them.

Personally I like Bose speakers. I have 4 301s and I love them.

The best and only way to know you're getting the speakers you want is to listen to them with music you know.

  11. Ignorance of the common peon... on Selfish Society · · Score: 1
...rests squarely on the shoulders of the peon himself.

John writes: This techno-elite, taking sophisticated knowledge of technology for granted, has lost touch with the vast numbers of people in the world -- the elderly, the poor, foreign-born -- who don't share their skills and confidence.

"Anybody can get an encrypted e-mail program," JOEB7 e-mailed me last week. "Why all the whining about privacy?"

JOEB7 doesn't seem to know that the vast majority of people have never even heard of encrypted e-mail programs, let alone used them. Such people dominate the most powerful and vital subculture in the world, but have no coherent political values beyond a nearly universal contempt for the one in place.

What's the term in law? Ignorance of the law is no excuse. This is no different with technology. If people don't take the time to learn about that expensive biege thing under their desk how can I feel sorry for him? When I take my car to the garage I have a very good idea of what it wrong with it. A car is expensive. It's in your best interest to know how it works so that you can protect your investment.

The same goes for your computer. It is an expensive tool that can give you access to vast amounts of knowledge. To learn about your computer and the internet does not take up that much time when you consider what you get out of your investment.

Don't yell at us the "Technilogical Elite." Yell at the ignorant peons. Wake up you peons! I have friends who are peons. I tell them of the laws that are being passed and the systems active on the internet all for the sole purpose of controlling everything you see and hear on the internet. I tell them that their every email can be read and stored for later use. They all roll their eyes.

    "I can still play Quake."

"I can still write my letters."

"If I have any confidential stuff to send I will worry about it then. For now I do not have a problem with it."

They all humour my "little rant" and go about their little lives.

They don't want to know. Should we save them?

If you want us to save the lamb from the slaughter you'd better tell us how.
