Recently, I was researching some java applets for a website. I saw many instances where different code bases had to be kept for IE, Netscape, and others.
On many sites I found that applets were slow or unpredictable on IE and/or Netscape 6.
Is java an idea that never lived up to its hype of being cross-platform or do most web designers need a serious lesson in programming?
I to have lamented about users not participating in the IT process. Some users fail to realize that this is not a one person operation. I cannot help you if you do not help me.
True enough but, perhaps it's unreasonable to set a goal of being a multi-millionaire from selling CDs. Perhaps it will simply take longer. Perhaps the artist will remain a normal person and not have to be shipped of to hollywood:)
Perhaps the new distribution companies will be webhosting companies. Hopefully this time the artists will gain more control.
This is the whole issue. The record companies are not trying to protect anybody rights. They are trying to protect their very existance.
As computers and electronics fall in price it becomes relatively easy for artists (I'm talking about real artist not studio produced acts) make their own music. Through the internet the artist can get exposed. The artist can even distribute his own music over the net. A group of artists could, together, purchase higher bandwidth if needed.
Suddenly the manufacture (which BTW costs less and a dollar a disc) and distribution companies are no longer needed...
I don't live in the US but from what I see of that country's government (and others) is that people have the power to elect an official. However, it is the lobbiests (read Mega-Corps) that have the power to influence these officials.
The click of death has already been mentioned but a few years ago I bought 10 Iomega IDE tape drives for some workstations (the network was P2P and I was inexperienced). I had a %50 failure rate on the drives. They would snap the tapes as soon as you loaded them. I would RMA the drives get new ones and some of those would do the same thing.
This is very true. Unfortunately not enough people listen/care or do anything about it. The only people that seem to be spreading the message are the bandana wearing hooligans protesting at WTO meetings. Whether it's a media spin or the way the demonstrators acutally are, no one will take them seriously unless they act like grownups.
Those of us that do purchasing where we work are still pressured to make the bottom line from accounting no matter where the product comes from.
This is nothing new. The automotive industry has done this for as long as I can remember. I worked for an autopart manufacturer for 5 years.
The goal of the automaker is assembly only. They want all parts outsourced and shipped in to assemble. This is a great deal for the automakers with suppliers constantly trying to outbid each other on contracts. As there is always someone who thinks he can do it cheaper, the suppliers must agree to unreasonable demands to cut costs. Indeed, the automaker demands a price reduction every year (notice that the price of a car goes up every year). It's hardly up for debate, they simple deduct there %2 annual price reduction from their cheque to the supplier regardless of what the invoice said. Don't like it? The automaker can, at any time, give the job to someone else.
I'm sure the computer hardware industry works in a similar fasion.
You are so right. RTS gets boring fast. You spend %80 your time gathering resources and only %20 in real action. Even when the action is on, you spend alot of time trying to control units that do silly things. (ie wandering in the wrong direction, attacking something it has no chance of surviving etc...)
I still think turn based games offer better stratagey.
Borland delivers products that are sold individually and in volume to major enterprise customers. The new end user license agreement mistakenly contains language that is specific to enterprise volume customers. This language is industry standard boilerplate for enterprise licenses, but it should not have been included in the individual product licenses. This was an error on our part and is in the process of being fixed.
I'm really sure that was a mistake (cough, cough). As for the last part. Has anyone ever seen such language in "enterprise licenses"?
Part of my first job out of school (I have two college degrees in manufacturing and electronics) was to look after the 5 DOS PCs and write some LOTUS123 spreadsheets.
I had no formal training but I had a PC at home that I had spent many hours playing with.
Later we bought a Novel server so I had to learn that.
Later still we bought a server that ran SCO Unix Openserver to run an MRP application. So I began to learn UNIX.
Finally we upgraded to Windows NT workstations. I kept lamenting to a friend how much I hated windows. He told me about this cool OS called Linux. I'd always wanted to learn UNIX as it seemed to me to be what the "Professionals" used. With some reading and alot of help from my friend I setup a dialup internet proxy for all the NT workstations.
The big step came when I bought a new PC. That's when the learning really took off form me.
Finally, sick of my part time Sysadmin job I started looking for a full time one. I found one and my learning again took off. My boss knows alot more than I. He is a great learning tool.
The final learning tool for me was setting up my own domain. It really helped me bring everything together.
Large portions of the internet (good or bad) are due in no small part to commercial entities.

Dune was written in the 60's (first published in 1965 I believe). That's long before 1977 in my world.
I still think Star Wars is a fun film. There is no shame it being influenced by the likes of Frank Herbert.

"Frustrated Windows user takes his own life..."
- Do we charge gun manufacturers with murder?
- Do hold car manufacturers responsible for allowing people to operate their cars will intoxicated?
Yet for some reason people feel that those who provide the means to illegally copy software or music should be responsible for the actions of others. Those of us that do purchasing where we work are still pressured to make the bottom line from accounting no matter where the product comes from.

That is the whole theory behind X.
Getting people to close their slack jaws and look away from Microsoft is another story.

The only thing that determines its success is who holds the patents and whether or not anyone else want's to pay the roylaties.
Most likely one person could not handle the lawsuite waving coporate lawyers demanding that they have ownership of any disputed domain name.
Make me one that supports OGG files and I'll buy it.

Now I see why people complain about stories getting favoured by certain people. I submitted this question back in September.
Do any of these players read Ogg Vorvis music files?
Talk to companies and see if they want to donate old computer parts that are just taking up storage space.
Install Linux, BSD or whatever you like on the old machines. Setup the network. Help the kids and teachers to run it themselves.

How is Evolution different from the combination of Kmail, Korganizer, and Kaddressbook which all integrate with each other so nicely?
