    My quad Opteron and 1GB Nvidia card are passively cooled from slow running case fans.

    Maemo, found on the Nokia N900, is Debian based. It's most likely that installing apps on a Maemo device will involve a simple 'apt-get install '.

    Being able to run the same apps on the device as I do on a Linux host would seem like a good thing to me. It frees my data.

    If T-mobile bills are anything like the ones in my post they could reduce paper by condensing the bills to just one page and stop including fliers to sell me more products. I suspect however, that this was more about another adding another charge and not about actually saving money.

    There has been a law passed in my area that charges a few cents for plastic shopping bags. The assumption was that the charge would somehow go to bettering the environment. Instead it goes into the retailer's pocket. Revenue by legislation. Glad I use bins.

    Agreed. I was alluding to the fact that since execs outsource to China then China would already know many corporate secrets. Grey market goods often come from the same plants that make authentic goods.

    The laptops and cell phones were probably manufactured there. In fact most US businesses outsource there manufacturing overseas.

    I've been thinking about one of these new Linux phones for my next upgrade. What kind of access does one have to the shell? Can one using an ssh client? How does one transfer data to a Linux workstation? Can one install more shell apps (e.g. ipcalc, tdl and remind)?

    Canada is in the same boat. It is very annoying. I have corporate account and a personal account. To pay myself I have to write a cheque, to me, from the corporate account and deposit the cheque into my personal account via ATM then wait 2 days for it to clear.

    I dislike the touch pads too. My thumbs often brush them causing my cursor to move unexpectedly. In general I find the mouse/track/touch to be rather clumsy versus the keyboard. I've been able eliminate a lot of mouse work by configuring hot keys through the window manager (openbox and now compiz) as well as xbindkeys. For email I use Mutt and for web browsing I use the Vimperator Firefox plugin.

    Potentially these customers will have a small block of ipv6 addresses. Will they be allowed to run their own web or email services?

    In think in this scenario the customer is still paying. It seems certain that the merchant will pass the tax along hidden in the price. However this may make regions with no sales tax more attractive to merchants as they'll be able to offer lower prices.

    Neither computers nor crews pilot vessels into harbours. Harbour pilots do.

    Sun certainly have some good products. I often think that they need to focus a bit more. They have their fingers in many pies but can't be good at all of them.

    At the moment I have no confidence in Sun. They were considering selling to IBM which potentially could have resulted in many of Sun's key products being discontinued. If Sun is willing to 'sell the farm' why should I buy their products? If Sun doesn't believe in their own future how can I believe in it?

    1. Why is Linux blamed for configuration files that are written by application developers? Linux is a kernel and is not responsible for Sendmail. Further I fail to see how the point and click method of configuration is better than editing a text file than can be searched, backed up and version controlled.

    2. Why is it the responsibility of Linux distribution maintainers to provide a means for commericial vendors to package their product? Vendors had to spend money to get certified for other operating systems. How about putting a little work into understanding and using a Linux distribution.

    3. X freezing? Umm...

    Perhaps I've just feed the troll but, I'm sure the pointy hairs will read the artical and think it's all true.

    Perhaps some of the institutions that still have class A networks reserved from the old days, with no reasonable need for them, should give them back.

    You might look at Opennms or Zenoss. The key to choosing the best monitoring service for you is to clearly define what you want to monitor and how you would like that information presented.

    Fast boot laptops would be a nice feature. On the server side look at Sun's SMF of Solaris 10. It boots many services in parallel. Not only does this decrease boot time but SMF knows the depencies of all services. This is useful when troubleshooting a failed service. I'd like to see this in Linux.

    It does sound ridiculous that a company can own all of your time. Alas many sociopath executives think exactly that. Last year I was offered employment with company that seemed like a good place to work. Then I saw the offer. Firstly their non-compete clause was so broad that I would need their approval before I could mow my neighbour's lawn for $5. Then there was an intellectual property clause stating that anything I created or conceived of regardless of its function, use or complexity during my tenure at the company, all day and all night was owned by them and not me. When I asked if, during a vacation, I invented an ever-cooling margarita glass the company would own that invention they calmly answered yes.

    It turned the job down.
