  1. First programming class on How Should I Teach a Basic Programming Course? · · Score: 1
I had my first programming class in 1979 and we used TRS80 Level II Basic. I was in 8th grade and the concept of a variable representing a value was being taught in programming, and also in algebra class. We drew diagrams on the blackboard to illustrate that each variable was associated with some location in the computer's memory, and the computer's memory was storing a value. A simple program changed a certain value for each statement, and we "played computer" by walking through the program, and writing variables' values on the blackboard.

    We did simple programs like

    10 FOUR = 5

    20 FIVE = 6

    30 PRINT FOUR + FIVE

We also did flow chart diagrams, IF conditionals, and some elementary logic.

Since I was taking the course just at the beginning of the PC era, I had barely used a computer prior to taking this class, as my elementary school days preceded the widespread penetration of the home PC. Perhaps I was fortunate in this respect.

Another reason is that linear algebra texts often use i,j as row and column indices for matrices.

We are not there yet, though. For musicians, artists, athletes, &c. you cannot make a living unless you are in the top 10, 100, or 1000 in the world in your field. Last I looked, there were millions of people making a living in software. So majoring in computer science or a related field is not such a bad idea.

Next time, please spare us the maudlin comments about the way companies operated in the past. Any for profit company acts to do just that, and that always has been the case.

  4. Difficult to prove? on California Sets Fines for Spyware · · Score: 1
This seems to be provable only under a narrow set of circumstances, perhaps if you are specifically targeted by another individual.

If you downloaded spyware inadvertently, how would you actually go about collecting the $1000? Whom would you even collect it from?

Yes, while all nodes (1000 or more) are writing simultaneously. I would really like to see how GFS stacks up against existing systems like IBM GPFS in a performance test with 1000 processors.

However, GFS seems to be available for general use at low cost. If it works reasonably well, the availability at this price point would be major progress.

I used to play the original Tempest arcade game around 1984. I wasn't really a big gamer; the farthest I got was the mid red levels. I haven't gotten a Playstation, but I wouldn't mind trying my hand at Tempest again.

  8. Payload of 13 tons? on Scientist Sees Space Elevator in 15 Years · · Score: 1

The article talks of a cable about 90 cm in diameter, which would have a mass of roughly 1 ton per meter of length (if the density is about 1.6 times water density). With a length of 100 000 km, the total mass is about 100 Million tons. Why would it fail with a load of more than 13 tons?

  9. A form of cheating? on A Running Shoe For Agent 86? · · Score: 1
This question needs to be asked. In road racing, and especially cross country, variations of the course (uphill, downhill, dirt path for part of the race, etc.) are part of the game. Part of the sport is selecting the shoe that is right for you prior to running the race. If your feet get too hot during the race, too bad.

Should a runner be allowed to obtain an advantage during the race by using such electronic devices in shoes?
