  1. Mel Gibson = AARP on New Mad Max Film · · Score: 1

Mel Gibson plays the senile Mad Max and is Mad because Safeway is out of Depends.

  2. Doomed to fail on Bitrate Peeling with Ogg Vorbis · · Score: 1
As bandwith gets wider and storage get cheaper, people are looking for higher quality streams, not lower.

And as others have noted, audiophiles do not care for ANY compress format, OGG or not.

  3. Re:Cruesoe doesn't need a fan on Building a Dead Silent PC · · Score: 1

The VIA C3 processor also does not need a fan either (I am using a 900mhz one). Like Cruesoe, it is a poor performer when it comes to heavy duty processing but is perfectly fine for web and Office.

  4. Re:Fanless PC PSU - THAT would be news on Building a Dead Silent PC · · Score: 1
I run a fanless PSU in my Shuttle SV24. It is technically achieved by... ripping out the fan and remove the PSU casing for better air circulation! I also use a Via C3 for CPU and runs it fanless using the stock heatsink. The HD is the Barracuda IV. Lastly, I have a quiet case fan going but could probably do without it.

Now that is quiet. The tradeoff? Performance.

  5. Re:laptops on 19 megabits on 3G · · Score: 3, Funny

Laptops? Every machine should have one of these. I want my alarm clock, when it goes off in the morning, to tell my coffee maker to make me an espresso, TV to tune into CNN, my PDA to check my e-mail and read me my appointments, and the closet door to open - all at 19 megabits!

  6. Re:Audio Concept on More on DVD-Audio and SACD · · Score: 0
Isn't it amusing how one person feels that devoting all the storage capacity to the actual audio and video of the film wiil make the film look better but devoting all that storage will not make the audio sound better?

Then again, I listen to and enjoy classical music.

  7. Re:You're obviously an uninformed zealot on Another iPod Competitor · · Score: 1, Insightful

Not informative at all! First, citing xiph.org as support for Ogg's superiority is as credible as citing microsoft.com showing the superiority of WMA format. Codecreview is horribly outdated - comparing MWA4 for God's sake when WMA 9 bet has just been released. Lastly, internet.com, whenever people asks, how do OGG sound compared to another codec, the developers do a little dance on how they have fixed a ton of bugs and then say "based on informal listening tests by the developers and other interested parties, we are confident that Vorbis will fare well in these tests." Not exactly unbiased or confident! It has been clearly shown that at high bitrates (256+), all codecs (MP3, WMA, etc) are virtually identical to the CD original. These test are done by the folks at Sound and Vision with real equipments are double blind testing - not some pimple-faced linux geeks listening through their awesome *cough* Logitech speakers. It is at low bit rates that codecs are often touting their performance against each other (WMA vs MP3 Pro, for example). Lastly, MS is the only one who's at least claiming that they support multiple channel audio support, mathematically lossless compression scheme (at 2-3:1) , etc. The only thing good about OGG is that it is free and open source. If anyone is a blind zealot, it would be you .

Most of us are concerned about our privacy. Yet, this allows the record company to know via this unique serial number that 1) we bought the CD, 2) how much we may have paid for it, 3) the geographical location/store which we bought it from, and 4) whatever demographical data we chose to provide. The record company should be applauded for coming up with this marketing idea but I do not think this is a win for consumer, IMHO.
