iPod has benn able to store data since generation 1. In fact, you can even boot from it if needed. Can't say that about the Nomad.

Oh, and you speak as if there is not a HUGE iPod community? Ever been to http://www.ipodlounge.com/ and the 1000+ pictures of iPod around the world?

    Slightly larger?

According to my calculation, the Nomad Zen is over twice the size (volume) of the iPod and 60% heavier.

    Apple iPod (Gen 3)
    103.5mm(H)*61.8mm(W)*15.7mm(D) = ~100k cubic mm and 158 grams

    Nomad Zen
    112.6*75.9*24.5 = ~209k cubic mm at 268g.

Furthermore, the set of functionalities that the two players offer are different (sync vs FM capability for example) so their value to user is highly different.

While I like iPod to support other formats (WMA and Vorbis Ogg) but I am satisified with AAC and MP3 for now.

Carl Sagan was a professor at Cornell University. It goes without saying that he was a very popular professor (at the time, not only for his popular scientist persona but also as the butt-head astronomer fame re Apple).

The problem is that he was a recluse, or rumored to be one. It was also rumored that he only taught one single 700 level grad course a year since no one ever found his course in the thick course catalog. For that matter, no one saw him on campus, in the library, in the labs, etc, either. Ever.

As a result, when I was at Cornell (7-8 years ago), at the beginning of the fall semester there was always an annual game - "Who spots Sagan on campus first".

So interesting and informative weblog from Sagan? Maybe. Interesting and informative in a class/on campus/in person? Who knows?!?

May he rest in peace with the stars, however.

I would say it is better than that. I use a VIA C3 900 Mhz processor in a Shuttle small form factor PC (SV24) at home. It uses so little power that it does not require a CPU fan.

It is sufficient enough to do the following without problem:

    • Decode MPEG-2 i.e. playback DVD or VOB files.
    • Encode and decode MP3.
    • Generally Office tasks and web surfing.
    • Even gaming (with older games like Counterstrike) if paired up with a decent graphic card.

What it does not well (at least for me):

    Encode MPEG-2.

Handle or manipulate large files (800+ MB high bitrate DivX file, apply Photoshop filter to a TIFF file etc, etc). (This is with 512 MB RAM and a large fast driveXP.)

New games that are CPU intensive.

If you have to seriously ask 'Will this have enough power for my (insert task here)?' then a C3 is probably not for you.

$800 is too much to pay for that anyway although I like its hardware specs (both firewire and USB).

    * "gives them a little bit of Bass [sic] to liven up the sounds"
    * "Since the refresh rate sits at 60Hz, after a few hours of fast moving screens you'll have a guaranteed headache if you sit too close." Refresh rate is only applicable to CRT screens, not to plasma and LCD. The viewer probably got the headache from viewing fast moving images that suffer from large pixel width and low response time (ghosting) that are common to plasma/LCD displays.
