If your e-mail is anywhere on any webpage in any corner of the web where you think nobody goes, the spammers will find it.
I know this to be true, but as a little experiment, let's see just how many spams are generated from one instance of an e-mail address on one page of Slashdot:

    spamtest@opticdesign.com

I'll update the results in my /. journal if anyone is interested in how attractive Slashdot is to spammers and e-mail address harvesters.

Jesus and Satan were having an ongoing argument about who was better at using the computer. They had been really going at the bickering.

Finally, God said, "Cool it!! I am going to set up a test which will take two hours and it will judge who does the better job."

So Satan and Jesus sat down at the keyboards and typed away.

    They moused.

    They did spreadsheets.

    They wrote reports.

    They sent faxes.

    They sent e-mail.

They sent out e-mail with attachments.

    They downloaded.

    They made cards.

    They did every known job.

Suddenly... without warning...ten minutes before the time was up, lightning flashed across the sky, thunder rolled, the rain poured, and of course, the electricity went off.

Satan stared at his blank screen and screamed every curse word known in the underworld.
Jesus just sighed. The electricity finally flickered back on, and each of them restarted their computers.

Satan started searching frantically screaming, "It's gone! It's all gone! I lost everything when the power went out!"

Meanwhile, Jesus quietly started printing out all his files from the past two hours.

Satan observed this and became even more irate. "Wait! This isn't fair, Jesus cheated! How did he do it??!!"

God shrugged and said, "Jesus Saves."

At the small Nebraska university I attend, our Internet access is completely shut off if we exceed 300,000,000 uploaded or downloaded bytes in one seven-day period. I would kill to be able to have 27 GB to transfer for the ENTIRE YEAR.

Thinking back to the eighth grade, I recall myself and my small group of friends having similar discussions not just about popularity, but about social interaction in general. Given a similar situation, we might have made that map, but not just for the heck of it.

We were constantly having discussions about behavior patterns we saw, trends we noticed, or theories we had about the whole popular/not-so-popular interaction. This was one of our fascinations, but I'm not sure if it was a cause of our unpopularity or a direct result of it. I'd be interested in finding out how prevalent these conversations were in similar groups across the world. Does anyone else recall similar conversations?

As far as I know, porn movies are the only ones that use the multiple viewing angles, in fact.
I've seen it used once, on the newly-released Signs DVD. In the bonus section, you can view two or three scenes while switching between the original storyboard view and the final cut. IIRC, you can also choose to hear sound effects only, score only, or the full audio track. Not terribly interesting, for the initial storyboards look nearly identical to the final cut.

My girlfriend and I attend a college that is a lo-o-o-ng seven hours from home, and she brings her laptop along for the car ride to play play games, listen to music, and watch DVD's with the other passenger whilest I drive. Ever tried to use a laptop in a car? (Or at a university desk that just a tad too high, for that matter...) It is about the most awkward sitting position ever.

Had tablets come out a few months ago, I'm sure she would have preferred a Tablet instead. They appear to fit the college student lifestyle much better than any other computing solution out there: More portable than a laptop, more versatile than a PDA, it's... Tablet PC!

The university that I am attending has a 300MB download limit per week. At that rate, it would take about a month and a half to download... I saw a website once that sold Linux distros on CD-R's for the approximate price of shipping. Does anyone have that address handy?

Also, is there a way to install Redhat dual-boot with XP without uninstalling XP first? I don't just have an extra PC sitting around.

It's mainly been these things that have been keeping me from diving into Linux just yet, but I'd like to start. I just can't seem to find a site to stay up to date on all the latest Linux news.:-)

I, an average Slashdot reader (methinks), can trace my maturation through the versions of DOS or Windows that I was using. The earliest I remember is MS-DOS 3.0, but I may be wrong. I came through Win3.1, 95, 98, and now I have XP. I love working with computers, and I hold a strong interest in Linux, OSS, and all that other good stuff. The thing is, I don't have the time to implement Linux, nor the patience to learn it right now. So, in the meantime, I like to know about all the bugs in Windows so that my system (and my extended family's systems, for that matter) can be as secure and reliable as possible. It's a good thing.
