I agree with your comments, however the website uses the browser's default fonts. In this case the font choice is up to the user. Of course it is a good idea to specify san-serif in the stylesheet for the online version and serif for the printable version.

They could improve the chance of sucess by using pre-written well established software. I recommend "Mars lander" availiable on the acorn electron introductory cassette
the PDF version looks like the output from ps2pdf.
ps2pdf will sometimes convert text to high-resolution bitmapped fonts rather than to embedded outline fonts. Currently, this will always occur when the PostScript file uses CID-keyed or double-byte fonts, when the input file uses kshow, or in some cases if it uses fonts with non-standard encodings; it may occur in other cases as well.
The birthday paradox is suprising. It is a good example of how bad humans are at calculating probabilities.
Ask everybody in the workshop to shout out their birthday (day, not year) one at a time, and ask people to raise their hand if they have the same birthday. In a class of 30, the chance of a coincidence is 70% example, explaination.
There is a 50% chance that two people out of a group of 23 will share a birthday.
If noone shares a birthday you may look silly though:-)
