Where my GF used to work they had a lot of security during the day, and none at night. Made no sense at all. They checked badges of everyone coming and going and you had to use your badge to go through certain doors between areas of each floors, and to get onto and off of the elevator which meant that they could limit your access to a particular area on a particular floor.

However, most employees needed to go to various areas and were given clearance to all areas. At night, there are no guards and the badges allow you access into the building, including the undeground parking, and then back out. So you could drive in at night, steal whatever you want, load it into your car in the underground parking, and then leave and nobody would be the wiser until they realize that lots of lab equipment is missing.

No cameras anywhere and they don't log badge usage so a disgruntled employee could potentially make off with some equipment and get away with it.

Right now I can fire up Kazaa or whatever other p2p program I want to use and I can download the latest album from whatever band. While doing this I'll have to wade through some file that are am radio quality, some files that aren't the right songs, some files that are incomplete, and other garbage. Add to this the fact that even though I have a good connection, some other users don't, and they are usually the users who have what I want.

How about this... setup a service that has music on demand... for maybe $20 or $24.95 a month. That's not a lot but it's more than they are getting from me now. For that price I want to be able to download quality songs at a minimum of 50k/sec. Maybe have a couple of price points for different speeds and offer songs in different formats and qualities. I'm happy with my 128 mp3's but some want other formats and most want higher quality. My ears don't work nearly as well as they should so I honestly can't hear a difference between 128 and higher bit rates which is a shame because I love music... but such is life.

So give me my quality downloads through a good pipe, have a helluva catalog for me to browse, and do it all for a low monthly subscription price. I already get music channels through my cable subscription... I think there are arond 40 of them... Digital Music Xpress I believe is what they call it... the quality is good, the selection on a couple of the channels is good, but I can't choose what I want when I want and therefore it doesn't suit me very well. With a great music on demand service for a low monthly price, I can hear the new stuff, the old stuff, and everything in between.

Picture it... your doing whatever and something causes a flash back... your 16 and your in the back of your dads station wagon with your sweetie gettin it on for the first time after drinking and listening to tunes for a while... your favorite song is on the radio as you "become a man"... you haven't heard that song in years but you don't want to go and buy a cd just to hear that one song one time... with the service I describe you can type in the name, pull it up, and 30 seconds later it's playing. Set it up just like Amazon.com... look how easy it is to find whatever book you want... make it the same way with music and for only $25 a month!

In an ideal world you'd be able to rip PSOne cd's to this new format disc and just play them directly, but no way Sony would give up that much money in licensing.

Maybe you are on to something here. What if they do exactly this? This would solve the problem of limited games at launch. I used to have a ton of PSOne games and I eventually sold most of them or traded them. If I could buy a portable that would let me play new games as well as my old PSOne fav's, I would start buying some of those games again. That would breathe new life into market for the older games which I'm guessing isn't making Sony much money anymore.

Secondly, the engine that powers the PS2 has already made Sony quite a bit of money. Now they can take that engine, rewrap it in a portable shell, and add several years to it's life. Then they can do the same with the PS3 engine later on.

I do blame you for being a moron and trying to skew the facts. Yes there were violent people. Yes they were blocking sidewalks, streets, shops, etc. Yes they basically shutdown most of downtown seattle for several days. I live just 10 miles south of Seattle and I saw much of this first hand. I've also seen a couple of documentaries about the protests and while I think the cops were out of line on more than one occasion, the protestors were not the innocent angels you make them out to be.

Why did you fail to mention the bottles and debris being thrown at police officers? It's sad that we only see what we want to see. You apparently wanted to see peaceful protestors being victimized by the Seattle Police and so that is what you saw. Maybe you should look again and see the truth.

You should be able to find any of a number of documentaries on the protest at any local library in Seattle or the surrounding area.

Back to the topic at hand, what are the flash mobbers hurting? They show up, gather for a few moments, and then disburse. I don't think there is enough time for anyone to become annoyed with these people. I think most people would still be in shock by the time it's over. With the WTO protests you had individuals "manning" the streets and key intersections pretty much around the clock.

I'm not so sure about this. I don't think that Apple is trying to deceive anyone in this matter. I think it simply boils down to not having the resources to do what they really want to do. You compare what IBM has done to what Apple has done... look at the difference in size between the two companies. Of course IBM can afford to have a few programmers working on side projects or maybe a few hundred whereas Apple may need more programmers than it can afford. Think of all of the problems Apple has had over the years. They don't have an endless supply of cash to spend however they want. Most things are do or die with Apple just like the G5. They had to innovate quickly or their machines would have been so far behind the rest of the pack that not even the most loyal could have used their products anymore.

Secondly, I don't think their main goal in OS X was to gain acceptance. I think they wanted something rock solid that was very extensible and powerful that they could easily and effectivley leverage for quite some time. Why start from nothing if you can start from something that is already 90% complete, slap a fancy GUI on it and then spend your time improving something that is already great? It seems to me that their decision to start with FreeBSD and build from that was a great decision. It's sad that they haven't given more back to the FreeBSD team but maybe with time that will change.

I think the reason sales of CD's are down is because people are disgusted with the behavior of the Music industry.

I can only speak for me but for me it's not about the music industry pissing me off or anything like that. It's about choosing free over something that costs. When I buy a cd (back in the day) I had to go to the store or order it online and then when I had it in my hands, I would rip it and then listen to it on my computer or I would burn it to an mp3 disc. I would then loan that cd to friends, give it away, or sell it for about half what I paid if I was lucky.

Now I fire up Hotline Connect, login to one of the servers I'm a member of and download whatever new stuff I want. I do this every couple of months and I save a couple grand a year at least. Considering that I now have roughly 20,000 songs, and the average cd has maybe 15 tracks, that's about $21,333 worth of music at $16 per cd.

Secondly, I don't have to worry about buying a cd that turns out to be nothing but crap. For example, I downloaded St. Anger by Metallica yesterday and it blows. I've bought every one of their albums including the box set for which I shelled out $85 (and back then, on my after school part time job wage, that was a lot of cash) but I had heard the first track on MTV and the radio and it didn't sound that great so I grabbed it online and low and behold... I hate it. I could have spent $20 for the same thing and I would have still hated it. This way I saved some cash.

One thing I do still buy is cd's that come with dvd's... like the new David Gahan I picked up last night... I would have purchased St. Anger if it had been any good... it comes with a dvd too... I wonder if this is the way music is going now... include dvd's which are more difficult and time consuming to pirate...

disclaimer: I'm way short on sleep so if any of the above actually makes sense, it's a miracle.
