    hmm looks i'm going to be defending michael and the editors on this one..

    the article text was mainly ME.. it was edited for content, and clarity, but mainly me.

    i posted this for sunday just because (after being in the media for a while) i know very little happens on sundays. and so if you're going to put in something that is only marginally interesting compared to AMD launching its new 128bit chip or whatever, you have a better chance of getting it posted if you submit it for sunday.

    the best and sometimes only way to fight a law like that is called "civil disobedience". made popular in the early part of the last century by people like Mohandas (Mahatma) Gandhi, the method involves a LOT of people who believe that the law is wrong gathering and breaking the law as a protest and (here's the important bit) ACCEPTING THE CONSEQUENCES. and coming out and doing it again

    Think marijuana laws are wrong?? get with a LOT of people, do it in public, and have the cops arrest you. go to PYA jail and come out and DO IT ALL AGAIN. it may even get the laws repealed

    of course if you can convince the judge that you were doing it as a form of protest, and protest is covered under "freedom of expression", then you could be free. but that may still leave you with a charge of vandalism.

    remember ..

    now if (hypothetically) i were to create a website about the political situation on country A, saying that the government was being run by gangsters or other such interests and put it online. now the gubmin or the powers behind it decide that i need to be taught a lesson. so they get the whois records out of my domain name, and some Really Large Individuals pay me a visit at night and express their displeasure at my actions in extremely personal and forceful terms

    or take it the other way. you see a website done by/for some gorgeous geek chixx0r, you look up her name, address, fone number on the whois and off you go.

    something tells me they REALLY didn't think this through

    actually it is the idea of what a "family" is that has changed in many ways, especially in the last century.

    Single parent families and same-sex parents (who may both be the biological parents), families which are the joining up of two single-parent families (brady bunch anyone??) are part of the evolution of the family.

    this would seem more apparent to a person from india where the extended family concept has been more prevalent (i'm from sri lanka and we have the same issues)

    personally i think we would begin to see more and more variance in families. ranging from monogamies to various combinations of polygamy. as robert heinlien once said in "time enough for love", the purpose of a family is to ensure that the kids are taken care of.

    so a "family" will always exist in some form or the other, but the FORM might be unrecogniseable

    i would like to know. when and where did you promote it? how come you guys didn't give it the kind of promotion it deserves (media and all that).

    last time i tried to join the Computer Professional's Club or whatever you call your little exclusive coterie i was told that since i don't have a degree i can't join.

    i've been running a dotcom for ages, i cut my teeth on slackware in 1996, i've been spending more time on the net than i have been sleeping. and they tell me because i dropped out of uni i can't join.

    am i bitter? fucking right i am. mainly because there are people like prof samaranayake trying to hold back the IT development in this country (i know all the stories and i am sure there are more) while people like us who are more dedicated to the DISTRIBUTION AND ADOPTION of foss are left in the cold.

    so if you do read this post give me a holler. but as far as i know, the free software groups here are just like the rest of the organisations, full of internal politics and backstabbing

    i'll post an analysis to my journal as soon as i can get one

    but in a realistic sense, we didn't have much of an IP law system, basing it on the British legal system and Roman Dutch Law. most of the precedents in use today have been set in the 1800's (yes really)

    and all of a sudden we seem to be using the same level of IP law as the US. more to come

    a friend of my father's when to meet one fo the signers of both 'agreements' and asked "you signed that agreement to save the garment industry, and did you ever stop to think what would happen to the village/smalltown kid who wants to buy a bootleg copy of windows for 100rs (1usd), do you want him to have to pay 100USD for it??"

    the response was "i didn't know about that side of it"

    anyway as a celebration for FSD (free software day) we didn't do JACK SHIT as far as i know (despite the post on it stating that something was supposed to happen). so in order to maintain the theme, i went and shoplifted myself a free beer

    the main reason travel is so time consuming now is the roads are so crowded. bad drivers only make it worse (and being over careful is being a bad driver too.. and yes i mean YOU.. the guy who has to waith until there is absolutely NO vehicle in SIGHT before you merge with traffic... (sorry guys, long day))..

    but the point is when all those morons take to the skies, it will make the roads less congested, and i can drive my car, along the ground, and not worry about anything except some bad driver causing a massive mid air accident that involves 7 vehicles falling on to me.. i can stop by the side of the road and take a piss if i want..

    so you take the high road and i'll take the low road .. and i'll probably get to where i'm going afore ye.. if you ever get there at all

    i have a group of friends that i made when we started off at one place of work. as time went by many of us left that company and moved to other sectors/companies/careers (not time went by, it was all in the space of ONE YEAR!!)

    when i was at the first company i helped create a tradition of going out to a pub at least once a month. it was a way to ensure that we all got out, and that we all met on a fairly regular basis. not everyone makes it to all of the crawls. the crawls when we ALL get together are rare to nonexistent (hey how can i remember .. its a frelling CRAWL)

    during the crawls many people who were never in teh original company have also been added, and joined the crawl. we currently number about 20 people in the crew, and at least 5 turn up for any given crawl

    there are times when one subgroup or the other has gone out, or one of us has gone out and found that another of us has been in the area wondering where to go/what to do.

    this kind of tool would help me meet my friends (who i rarely meet at work, or in school or any other setting other than the crawl or MSN) to meet up

    actually that MAY be bcause hotmail signs you up to a few magazines and stuff by default when you sign up. you should be able to go through your membership settings and un-sign-up. personally i have found hotmails spam catcher to be pretty good, it stops a few false positives now and then (and then i white list it) but on the whole it seems to stop spam. and i've had the account for 8 years (since early 96) with the email addy being plastered all over the internet and usenet
