    You can be planning a murder, and the operator just has to relay the messages back and forth.

    Well, murder is one of the exceptions. I have a friend who is a mental health professional, and he said that if a client says things that makes him think the client is reasonably likely to attempt murder, he has the legal responsibility to inform the police or the person. Not a privilege, a legal responsibility.

    This may vary from state to state though.

    WinBugs Is another code that does this stuff. It is amazing what it can do. Since this is slashdot, I will mention that their mailing list just had an email today mentioning a port to (the open source) R that is well underway. The program itself is free (as in beer).

    But basically, the Bayesian approach is a probability approach, not a statistics approach (i.e. what is reality like based on my data and on previous data).

    It could help for slashdot. Unfortunately, the site is only given a small portion of a machine, so the added complexity would probably cost the parent company too much.

    Yeah, and the thing was that because Bell Lab's transistor contained gold it was not comercializable. Intel invented the Al/Si transistor AND the integrated circut. Plus, by all accounts, William Shockley was... not very nice.

    sorry, 2R/yr is the administrative limit. That is, if you get above 2R/yr the radiation safety officer has to work with you to alter your work pratices to decrease your anual dose. At the same time, it is true that you can have 5 R years.

    On the Airplanes part, the UN's report on radiation pointed out that it is airline workers that receive the most radiation dose, not power plant workers or medical professionals!

    Living in a home made of brick (as I do) will increase your dose by about 30 mR/year. On the other hand, living in a poorly ventilated house over a soil rich in Uranium can increase your dose by about 1000 mR/year. This is all in the United States NRC's (not online) NuReg 1401.

    The highest reading she shows or talks about is 3 mR/hr. This is only 30 times higher than the levels in Grand Centeral Station, and is many times less than a number of natural locations.

    Sorry, I'm not trying to karma whore, but my day job relates to getting people not to be affraid of radiation, so seing this post have such high mod points is really getting to me.

    Wait a second! she is showing readings of less than 1 mR/hour. Power plant workers can work in 1 mR/hour for the entire year and not exceed NRC's strict 2 R/year limit. In otherwords, this is nothing. Parent poster doesn't know what he is talking about.

    Not so sure. You probably get about 300 mR/year and you may get way more. For example, if you smoke you get an additional 1000 mR/year (1 R/year) in addition to all the other things in the tobaco.

    Also, 300 mR is only enough to increase your risk of cancer by 0.01 %, i.e. it's not going to take any time off your life (unless you happen to be the one in 10,000 who gets cancer as a result of that additional exposure, and even then, your chances of dieing are only 1 in 2).

    "You're the only person on that machine - if you choose an inconvenient time, that's your own damn fault." No, I'm not. It is a multiuser envrionment any my whole family is loged in at once. Everybody has stuff up (web pages they assume will be there when they come back, emails half written).

    Okay, how's this, I can't get 12 tables to join correctly in Access. Worse yet, it returns a subset of the actual results and throws no error--so it looks like I got a legit result set, and it takes major debuging to findout that I don't have one.

    I think they used the stable isotopes of carbon (12 and 13) and found that it was different from the rest of our solar system.From there, it is clear that the source is different from the rest of our universe, perhaps older (but they don't say how they figured out that it hadn't just blown in since our solar system was formed).

    The Mac OS needs no documentation. I'm using it now and everything just works (and not like Windows where it appears to be conspiring against you when it "guesses what you wanted to do").

    I'm sorry, please don't take this as an insult, but what is your point?

    I installed Mac OS X on my computer. Every now and again I have to look at the manual (setting up keys for ssh for example) but most of the time everything is even better placed than I could have imagined (shared network printers appear to be printed from in the print dialog!) In contrast, when I installed linux on my PC, I spent so much time mucking around with it that I was about 1/2 as productive...

    S-VHS is 640 by 480 at a frame rate of 30 frames per second (well, half the lines at 60 frames a second, but same total pixels). Thera are also three colors. That makes for 36 ns per pixel-color. Since there is no I'm starting a pixel signal, the clock needs to be accurate to much less than this. Granparent poster said 1% makes it worthless... 0.1% of 36 ns. but thats just a guess.
