Shhhh, such speech is doubleplus-ungood. Here, have a goodthink *offers pill*

  2. Re:Can't wait for vimacs on Red Hat Nullifies Differences Between Bash, Csh · · Score: 1

I've had thoughts about learning the left one to keep my mouse hand free. Is that what they're calling it these days? :D

  3. Re:Opposite on Rosen, Valenti Warn Colleges About P2P · · Score: 1
Here at LSU, there's no official policy against P2P sharing, at least nothing that they make any big fuss over. However, the routers seem to mysteriously deprioritize P2P packets, resulting in abysmal transfer rates (usually sub 1Kbps).

Fortunately our network is its own entertainment. I imagine someday, some joker will demonstrate why you shouldn't leave your entire C: drive shared with write permissions. So far, not much happens over the Windows shares network except for folks leaving their commentary on others' porno collections.

  4. Of course there's no threats... on Rosen, Valenti Warn Colleges About P2P · · Score: 1

They're not fighting a war on P2P. They're fighting to liberate the innocent Americans from the evil tyranny of intellectual property thieves. That is, once they've garnered the necessary support from a higher governing body.

(Or am I getting my news items mixed up? Music/film industry, U.S. government, it's all so confusing!)

  5. Electricity is always fun on Surprising Science Demonstrations? · · Score: 1

If you have the room (and access to the equipment), you could try showing off stuff like Tesla coils, plasma balls, those 'Earthquake in a Can' thins (sry, can't think of the proper name), and such. I know I loved that stuff when I was a kid (er, well I guess I still do!).

  6. Mod parent down! on Surprising Science Demonstrations? · · Score: 1

I don't think the kids' parents would be too pleased if you did any of that. 8O

  7. Re:Sweet! on Indian Government Goes For Free Software · · Score: 1

I'd imagine the actual number of people who have access to a PC, much less administration responsibilities for a Linux box (IIRC web surfing, email, etc. in KDE/GNOME is point-and-click), are quite a bit lower. There are quite a great many U.S. households which don't own (don't want or can't afford) a computer, and I don't think China or India would be doing any better in that regard. :-|

  8. Re:Poetic Justice? on Blind User Sues Southwest Over Web Site, Cites ADA · · Score: 1

This is a totally different ballgame than inaccessibility to the blind. Most blind people bear no responsibility for their blindness. I suppose obese people should sue the local laser tag joint as well, for not offering XXXL vests? It's pretty simple:

Not to be insensitive, but if they offer bigger seats:
    * They'll be able to seat less per plane.
    * You might have to give your waist size when buying tickets. Otherwise, they may seat you improperly or undersell. How many overweight people want to do that?
    * If they simply don't charge extra for multiple seats, then they're losing a fare. Who wants to sit next to someone that's hanging out of their seat onto you?

Now, I'm quite overweight (256lbs, 6'0", and trying hard to lose it), and I fit just fine into a coach class seat with plenty of room to spare. But if I didn't, then the airline shouldn't have to subsidize my obesity. Perhaps if one was unusually tall because of genetics, but otherwise...

I think Elvis is looking in to it. Just be patient and wait for him to present his report to JFK. :)

  10. Re:Too Bad on Amateur Rocket Launch a Failure; NASA Debuts Shuttle-cam · · Score: 1

They've grown so bloated and unfocused

This is the kind of thing discussed in Space by James Michener. Given the state of our corporate-sponsored democracy, they simply have too many people to please, and too many backs to scratch. The public wants sci-fi extravagance (but not to pay for it), vendors want their equipment used, and plenty of other industries (aerospace, technology, chemical engineering) all want their slice of the pie. All this with an ever-shrinking budget and increasing political micromanagement. Politics as usual in the U.S. government :/

  11. Space tourism setback? on Amateur Rocket Launch a Failure; NASA Debuts Shuttle-cam · · Score: 1, Funny

I suppose, then, that it will be a while before they can beat the Russians by offering space rides for the low, low price of $19,999,999.95.

  12. Yoik! Video ringers! on Nokia 7650 Modified to Record Video Clips · · Score: 4, Funny

Great. So theoretically, instead of interrupting movies and lectures with an obnoxious rendition of "Bohemian Rhapsody", cell phones can instead play highly compressed scenes from "Can't Hardly Wait."

  13. DScaler on The Best of Windows Open Source Software? · · Score: 1

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this one yet. DScaler is a fine GPL'ed BT8x8 tuner and video deinterlacer for Win32. It certainly beats the pants off of the ATI crap that came with my card, and looks and performs better than xawtv for me. All in all, a 10/10 in my book.

  14. Where is the "oomph?" on Air Force to Test Aeroelastic Wings · · Score: 1

Maybe I'm just dense, but I don't think the article specified exactly how the wings would be bent. What will be used to warp the surfaces -- hydraulics? Changes in airflow? Electrical actuators? "Fly by wire" seems a bit too broad :)
