Good points. The social impact is negligable. The school is using a different ID system, plain and simple. I'll admit a drivers license is still a good form of ID. What is the difference between looking at an ID and a picture of an Eye? Why would you fight this? Its the administrations job to make the decisions regarding safety and security policy. If parents feel the system makes their kids safer it is simply a side benefit. Lets face it - if someone is willing enough to snatch up your kid they are going to succeed. I'll agree on the monetary side of things. The cash should be spent on school books, supplies, and teachers salaries, but its a government grant. Seeing Iris technology in action is exciting. Biometrics are inevitable in the near future. I would love it if I didnt have to carry ID! Scan me please! Our timeclock / door access in our company is all biometric. Now I dont need timecards or swipecards for employees. There are many ways to look at it. I am all for technology!
Amazingly enough I worked on a beta for this project. The iris scanner is a simple tool. The fact is IRIS images are practically impossible to fake. The images are stored in some kind of lossless image format which makes it easily stored into any backend database. You could run the whole thing with a Windows frontend. (VB or VC are the only ones supported in the camera API as far as I know) This project has great potential and I think this will be adopted in more schools throughout the state. Its no more expensive or difficult to administer than any other biometric. I think this is a great step towards safer schools and the practical applications of biometrics.
YOURE ABSOLUTELY WRONG!!!
"People who have ATi graphics cards and/or people who would rather buy such a graphics/DVR capable card from the local Best Buy or CompUSA instead of ordering a specialized Linux supporting card from a more obscure source."
You can buy a Hauppauge WinPVR at Compusa, Circuit City, etc... http://www.hauppauge.com/pages/buy/wtob_us.html
These cards are not obscure or specialized. They work well on many platforms and are easy to buy!
These are hands down the most compatable / reliable PVR cards out there for Linux and they work well in Windows MCE. I am not going to crap on Windows MCE because it does have some nice features, but let me offer some insight to my ignorant friend. Regarding ATI - They have horrid Linux support. I have seen a handful of people successfully use their ATI TV Cards (Not AIW cards) for Myth. (http://www.mythtv.org/ The AIW series support just isnt there. However, the Nvidia driver support has been wonderful thus far. I set out to put together my own PVR. At first it was windows based due to the ease of setup and install. It sucked. It was resource greedy and there are subscription costs. I do not want to pay for a TV guide which should be free already. So began the MythTV install. I have successfully set Myth up on Fedora and KnoppMyth. Both are viable solutions depending on your experience. KnoppMyth (http://mysettopbox.tv/) is extremely easy to install and setup. You have a handful of hardware options. I use an Nvidia Ti5200, and old SB Live, and a new Hauppauge PVR250. Relatively cheap stuff in todays market. This system is incredible! You can configure multiple frontends (Including the nifty Xbox Frontend) on a single backend server, have a special server to cut commercials, or just one box to do it all. You have Mame, SNES9x, Nes support, RSS Feeds, a Web Browser, a web frontend to schedule from another pc..its great. So many people have done it now the documentation is very comprehensive. If you have ever played with a Linux box or built your own PC this project is not beyond your scope. Get off the microsoft bandwagon and dive into a real PVR. You will not regret it.
Comcast seems to be pricey, but personally, when I priced out a comparable package...DirectTV was more expensive, Dish Net was a few bucks cheaper. If you can get DSL, which I cant, Dish would probably be the way to go. If you want comcast internet standalone its like 13 or 14 bucks more a month! Sucks. A necessary evil unfortunately.
Start->Run->"cmd" is enough command line for me! After growing up on an apple ii c/e and lovely ms-dos i have grown fond of a GUI. CLI's should always be accessible, but hiding in the background to avoid any newba's mistakes. Linux/BSD is not viable in the office. Too easy to break and too difficult to teach. Mac is not viable. I can run adobe products on a overclocked Athlon XPM/winxp faster that a powermac / OSX for 1/3 the price. Dos...I still have my 5.25" backups of my old DOS accounting software! I only wish I could find a drive that would take them. Dos was a beautiful thing. One process at a time...either it worked or didnt. Those beautiful ansi text menu's driven by batch files! Bill does it again. Winxp takes the crown as an overall platform for productivity. MS may be the anti-christ, but just like McDonald's - I'm lovin it!
AMD has been creeping on Intel's market share since I can remember. Who in their right mind is going to spend the money on a Wintel server from Dell when they can put something serious together from other sources or all by themselves.
Why use an inferior product? There must be some serious kickback from Intel for Dell to lock themselves in.
I run finance and it at a small company. Every computer in that place is custom built by me. I remember I upgraded the front office last year and I considered using linux. The total cost of ownership would have been at least 3-4,000 dollars less if I had went with a linux solution. The cost of training would have been ridiculous though. First off, good luck finding a GNU product for word processing and accounting that is as easy to use for a windows brainwashed society. It was tough enough to convince anyone that Thunderbird was a better choice than Outlook. After using a direct labor expense model you find out your office people cost about 35-40 dollars an hour. Training for linux would take a long time. After that, you are most definitely getting questions and problems from your employees, probably 3 to 4 times as much as windows questions. What about turnover too. You would have to find someone else who is Linux literate or train them. Unfortinately, with windows your ROI is much higher than linux. It is going to cost you most in productivitiy and training to get to a Linux desktop. I used a Linux solution personally for about 7 months. I liked it, but the apps and overall solution just didnt pan out as well as using XP. I think windows is a bloated piece of crap, but our business is years away from a Linux solution for the simple fact that the indirect costs are probably 20-40% higher than using windows.
First Amendment of the US Constitution states: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
Tolerance is your first constitutional right. You are ignorant to believe a Canadian news agency talking about an American election and blowing it out of proportion. Regardless, what about the other 49 states besides Ohio?
Kerry was favored among the lower income brackets and minorities as well as age groups below 30. I guess evangelical christians make up the majority of the US!?
Also, the "rest of the world has gotten over it" statement is hollow. What evidence to have to prove it? I think it is easier to blame global problems on the US rather than someone else getting the balls to step up to the plate and pitch in.
The age old saying... Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one. Republicans took a sweep this year. Regardless of who won the election the US is still a great place to prosper. Great election and great feedback. Responding to your statement - "I dont want to live in a religious police state." 81% of American adults identify themselves with a specific religion according to national studies. No matter who won the election youre still surrounded by people who have a specific faith. Good stuff.
Kudos. Microsoft has been selling mediocre software for many years. Its about time something comes back to bite them in the arse. Its not about the money, its the princpal of the thing. They obviously have no problem marketing the product. Maybe they should pull some of the marketing money back into the end product and for once create something solid.
NT4 on Alpha was decent for a while. The DEC FX interpreter had a long way to go before they abandoned it. Let's face it..if you are running windows on an Alpha there is something wrong with you. VMS, DEC Unix, and many other variants ran great on that machine.
Fast Breeder Reactors have quite a good case. A fast breeder can produce excess fuel for later consumption. The thought being, once you initially fuel the reactor it can sustain itself for quite a long time. It has been fueled initally by plutonium, which in turn brings up the weapons proliferation problem. Weapons grade material can be extracted from the waste. Current common US reactors are fueled by enriched uranium which is currently abundant and cheaper than plutonium (According to my research). Fast breeder reactors are more efficient and the waste has a much shorter half-life. Look into it. Good stuff. http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/nucene/ fasbre.html
Sorry to hear you are jobless. In my opinion, some companies are moving the wrong way. I have been the CIO/CFO for almost a year. I don't know if my opinion is right since I am relatively a newbie to the position, but I would NEVER outsource security or any other confidential type work. How does a company justify paying a third party rather than an employee. I can understand adding dollars to the bottom line, but building a team of employees / co-workers is much more important. The problem with tech jobs is the people signing your paycheck and doing the hr work dont know sh*t about your job. In my area, central nj, tech jobs are steadily on the rise. I am about to start looking myself;) Look at it this way. It's an opportunity to move onto bigger and better things. A company that does not value its employees is doomed to failure. Good luck.
As a former student of Lafayette College...ranked 30 something, these rankings dont mean shit. Lets face it. As slashdotters we know what you learn in college does not help you in the real world. I learned more in 6 months of work than I did in all 4 (actually 5;) ) years of college. College is a business...regurgitating knowledge that has been passed on for countless years. I can honestly say the only class I took in college that was worth while was software engineering. A class that gave you a project with 5-7 people. Take a business and automate it on the pc from scratch using extensive planning and advanced programming. College degrees today seem more like a matter of money rather than intelligence. The most intelligent people I know make about 1/3 of my salary. College is a piece of paper that puts your foot in the door. The best thing I got out of school was fraternity life. Long live Zeta Psi.
if you have broadband at home, setup a socks proxy at home. Should work unless your admin blocks all ports except http, smtp, imap, pop3, etc.. As an admin, I dont discourage IM, but you get a lot of people with security issues and a power trip. Worked great for me in college to bypass p2p restriction. I'm sure you can find a freeware server. Find a client at socks.nec.com i think.
First off...doesn't everything microsoft makes have security issues? AOL did something similar to this some time ago. They changed their software so that third-party clients could not connect. So, third-party clients patched their software to overcome this. Is it possible for microsoft to lock down msn messanger? Doubt it, but you never know. Sux.
That sucker will likely pull you in. Your solution could be a phone call away or a trip to home depot. It's up to you. Regardless...whenever working with high voltage protect yourself. Depending on what kind of artist and how much patience you have, you may be able to solve your own problem. Remember wiring is like plumbing without water. I suggest your own sub-panel, not only for ease of troubleshooting, but safety as well. I recently came into a similar problem for my companies datacenter, only I felt a little safer working with 480v 3-phase. At least that will throw you (you hope). Nerves of steel and good insulated gear will get you through without any problems. Be neat, cautious, and label EVERYTHING.
Like many others have said, most people see internet and think email,www. First..poll your resources. What kind of talent do you have to show these average joes. If your going to teach something you damn well better have someone who not only knows the subject, but is somewhat of an expert. Find out what your resources are and schedule accordingly.
I guess what I meant to say is: Why would you run anything else besides MAC OS on a MAC? From a pricepoint they are slower for the money. The fact that they do not run windows does not bother me in the least. I'm not saying they are a bad box, just not practical for other applications besides MAC OS.
Each OS has its niche users. As I walked through, a company which I will not name, in midtown Manhattan I see a slew of IMac's. Why are these people torturing themselves with this inferior machine, I think to myself. It hits me: the only reason these boxes are there is because they have a sleek and sharp look. A cosmetics company such as this one must keep all appearances high. I go back to my plant of operations and take a look around. There definitely aren't any MAC's..ugh. There are about 15 different styles of x86 based PC's running some variant of Windows XP/2000/NT. I am the only one running a Linux desktop with a Linux server and several BSD servers and the good ol' ancient NT PDC. As far as other UNIX based variants, why pay a pretty penny when I can get the whole thing for free with Linux. I am not a fan of apple, and haven't been since they stopped making the II-C and II-E, but I understand why people stick to them. They are hyped up as a great graphics computer, and always keep a fresh look. Dollars to cents - MAC is a horrible buy. I'm not a fan of a platform that is hardware/software locked. I've had my share of MAC troubleshooting and to me they are just boring and SLOW to boot. Props go out to Tru64 though, too damn bad Alpha chips are fading away. Enough rambling... What I believe it comes down to is the end-user preference. Most people are going to stick to MAC or Winblows because its easy and known. I believe Linux is on the threshold of a breakthrough in desktop technology. The UI is nice, but the office and home apps just aren't quite there yet. If it were up to me the world would be UNIX. Just a thought.
Simply put, I do not want a microsoft product ruling my snail mail. Cool idea, but getting it past the postmaster general would be a neat trick. I do not know too much about the post in other countries, but in the US, the zip code works just fine. I do not forsee the time or budget of many coutries laboring to put into effect a whole new sorting system. There would be no more 90210!
Think hard back when UNIX was so very expensive and SCO was a legitamate solution. Now look and see what an utter piece of SH*T it is compared to these open source solutions we have for FREE. SCO is obviously looking for a way to put it's name in the press and maybe turn a few heads. What does it really matter to us, we all know SCO is dated, and Caldera is just another Linux distro. It would be no shame if it disappeared.
