Actually the Arabs are a people that originated in the peninsula, but has spread much further. They occupy Africa north of the Sahara and the arabian peninsula including most of Iraq. Turkey and Iran are non arab states, despite being moslem and somehow also find moustashes cool. There are plenty of christian arabs, especially around Israel. But I digress.
I hope no countries will be destroyed, so I'm not so concerned about how best to rebuild them later. Why the Saudis would be interested in cleaning up that mess, I have no idea.
In the case of Afhganistan, it's already pretty much as destroyed as it can be. If we somehow could get a halfway decent government installed that brought peace there, and gave'em a few $B to clean up the place, I suspect we'd have a very friendly Afganistan for a long time. That's easier said than done, though.
Anyway, I just wanted to nail you for ingorance. Mission accomplished. Maybe it was a bit silly, but it felt good.
The funny part is that both the German and Japanese constitution was written by the American victors after WW2. Well at least the Japanese, I don't know about the German. The allies probably hade more influence there.
It's a difficult balance, and some people will always be upset at where the scales fall. For now, let's just accept what protection our government is trying to give us, and complain about it later after we've eliminated whatever threat has caused this
The threat of terrorism can never be eliminated, so you just made Carnivore permanent.
If they at least made the store of my email accessible, I wouldn't have to keep a backup on my own disk...
I don't understand why anyone would trust the FBI. That agency has a stunning history of abusing it's powers, making J Edgar Hoover the most powerful man in US history. I guess most Americans are simply unaware of that history.
Only excerpts (I have no interest in reading more) - the unbelievers are not people and are to be converted, by the 'sword' if necessary.
It's pretty easy to find those kinds of genocidal passages in the bible as well. Especially if you quote with a purpose.
But then again, the Christians haven't crashed into any towers or exploded car bombs in busy streets lately of which I am aware
What about the christian Timothy McVeigh? Or the catholics and protestants in Northern Ireland?
And of course, it is far from clear that this was done by moslems acting on religious grounds in the first place.
I'm pretty old and I've come to the conclusion that evil is amazingly evenly distributed among different religions, political views and ethnic groups. I used to think not, but I've learned.
That might be worth exploring, but remember that adding functionality to disable pilot control over the plane carries the risk of that circuitry malfunctioning, and bringing down non hijacked planes.
There are 15 million potential blood donors in the NY region, and all air traffic is down, so I unless you're in the area, extra blood donations probably won't make any difference.
Also, in event like these, most people either die immediately or escape unharmed. I expect tens of thousands of dead, but not too many injuried.
Of course, if there are new attacks, a good blood supply will be good.
I wouldn't call myself an expert player, but I've played for 35 years, and I know a lot about it.
I'm also stunned by this. I would have thought such a position was clinically lost. And it probably is in a real game, but in a blitz game Short has too little time to figure out this alien position, while Fisher has probably spent quite some time studying it and is aware of all the quirks of it.
Still, had someone asked me if this was possible, I would have laughed at it. And so would probably Short,.
I suppose it could be a computer or Kasparov on LSD, but it sure smells like Fisher. It's just the kind of thing he would do...
Sure, large corporations can and do murder to further their interest. I hope you're not implying that politicians and governments are above that.
It's not clear what scenario you're imagining, but a state formed according to mainstream libertarian ideas would be quite small by current standards, but have only one single purpose, to protect it's citizens from force and coercion. That it would be much smaller than the current state doesn't mean that it would be poorly financed for doing this one task (nor that it wouldn't, of course).
You seem to be arguing against the anarchist position, which is also an interesting one, but not what was originally suggested, I think.
Organized crime is created by government regulation. It rose to power by prohibition, and has been sustained by bans on prostitution, gambling etc, and lately the war on drugs.
Remove these government regulations, and you remove almost all incentive for organized crime.
While the RIAA, MPAA, Disney etc are big and powerful, relitive to the computer industry they are mere bugs on the windshield.
While the DMCA was an annoyance to them, this would be a major pain for it. Surely they could and would buy enough votes to kill this bill?

I don't have the numbers, but I'd be very surprised if less than 90% of US legislators are lawyers. Lawyers write the laws, and they're not likely to write lawyer hostile legislation.
If lawyers are a protection against big government, they are then supposedly a protection against themselves. Not the most reassuring arrangement.
A lot of people say that to me, but I've never seen it, and I doubt it can actually be done well. The stickers don't reattach too good.
Even if it works it is much slower than the 20-30 seconds a good speed cuber need to solve it the regular way. The same goes for the more practical "trick" of taking the pieces apart.

Thanx for posting my site! I feel honorbound to point out that I'm the Swedish champion, but only came 4th in the world championships. Many people seem to make a shortcut and claim I'm the world champion...
Also, I've moved my site but not redirected the old one (I really should get that done...), so an updated version of that page with some speed quicktime videos is available here: http://lar5.com/cube/speed.html
BTW, some people (most of whom were hardly born at the time of the first championship) are working on putting together the second World Championships next year. More info on http://www.speedcubing.com. These kids are really fast, so I don't expect to win, but I'll definitely be there.
In theory you're right. In reality GWB only can go in and rectify the most egregious deviations from his principles. There just isn't time to do much else than trust the people you appointed and deal with the everyday crises that pop up.
All I think you could correctly say is that GWB isn't opposed to this, not that he strongly agrees with it.
While the M$ trial is a pretty big deal in the nerd world, it's still a second rate issue in the big political scene.
I had to check out what all the fuss was about and read the first book. While I'm sure it's a good adventure story for six year olds, there is no way in hell it's anywhere close to Hugo quality.
I guess the later books might be better and more complex, but still...
Well, it comes down to how you define all these terms. With my definitions, my statement is right. With yours, it's probbaly not.
Still there is a reality behind what I'm saying, regardless of what terms you use. Mass democracy is only found in free market based economies. The (more or less) free markets come first, followed by an economic upswing that builds a (more or less) prosperous middle class that can't be bossed around anymore, and then democrazy follows, after some more or less wild disturbances. I expect China to go that way within 10-20 years. I'm hoping for "less wild", but I'm not too confident.
Athens was a democracy for the small minority of non slave males. I don't really know about their economy, but it was hardly a centrally planned one.
I don't know what you heard about Iceland, but it's is a perfectly normal western capitalist welfare state. Back in the day, it was more anarchist than democratic, due to the lack of a state, among other intriguing features. See http://www.hi.is/~bthru/friedman.htm
Feudalism has nothing to do with corporations. It's about kings and local lords and owning the peasants in exchange for providing defense. Mussolinis big invention (after his time as a socialist) was the corporatist state.
All states need gangs of thugs to keep people in line.
I could argue all day, but there is nobody reading this except us this late anyway, so why bother.

Dude, neither Afghanistan, nor any of the surrounding states have any significant Arab population at all.
You really should learn something about the world before you start mouthing off about how best to rule and slaughter it.

So how do you explain that democracy only ever appears in capitalist societies??
I don't deny the growing corporatist problems in the US, but remember that a country run by corporations is not capitalist, it's fascist.
Study history. Don't believe all the cool charismatic rebellious people tell you. Nor, for that matter, whining old men like me.
