    And certainly that 2.1GHZ conroe is sold as Core II 6600, which means intel is cheating, because its only as fast as an A64 5000.

    Google makes money by data-mining, information hogging and add selling, which by itself is the incarnation of all that is evil about the web going commercial.

    Well, i really like this kind of buisness model.
    My adblock, too, as i havent seen any ad on slashdot since i use firefox...
    Seeing that the population here might be a bit more tech-savy than on myspace, maybe ./ should take a close look if this idiotic content pollution isnt in fact counterproductive (bandwith cost for serving add-blockers and loss in suscribers (why would one pay for the crap?) vs increase in adds from the non-blocking minority).

    Take a look at the benchmarks of stuff workstations really do.
    Have you seen how annihilated the k8 architecture was in stuff like compiling/photoshop/media encoding and even rendering (in 3dsmax as well as in cinemabench?). Thats the stuff people buy workstations for, and thats exactly where AMD is losing it.

    Maybe YOU are the g4m3r here, because it seems you have no fucking clue about the whole situation.

    IN fact, explaining to you just why the conroe|woodcrest design is superior, and why the architecture of the k8 is slowly becoming depricated (besides some miner tweekings the core is still the k7, designed 8 years ago) would be a futile exercise, like trying to teach a turd to dance.
    Just get a clue.

    Unfortunatly, because i still have some AMD stock left i forgot to sell half a year ago :)

    And unfortunatly, partII, because AMD is really gambling at the moment. They HAVE to get fab38 on track ASAP, if they want to stay competitive. Not staying competitive would mean losing the financial backbone to compete at all in design and manufacturing.
    And i personally LIKE to have a think called "choice" when selecting CPUs, and while conroe is a great design, i dont want a future of intel monopoly with stagnation again.

    Too bad that AMD quad-cores WILL have to wait until they finally get their 65nm process running.
    PLus then, together with the abyssmal cache density of the all k8 series CPUs, they will still have a hard time manufacturing it.
    The exclusive design of the caches isnt helping much either, for that matter.

    Simple speed.
    Those Terastations have about 15Mbyte maximum write speed in raid5 mode, this one according to the review >35.

    If you want to actually use it as a NAS, and not as a media server, thats a huge difference.

    Well, the problem with those small fans and high speeds is that most likely they WILL be dead after a few months.

    12cm fans are low rpm and _extremely_, and i mean _REALLY_ extremely reliable (when not bought from the latest casemod supplier. I mean those nice metal ones). I have seen electrical installations where those things have been running for 20 years, nearly burried in dust, without breaking down.

    Why does everybody here get so up with "The HEAT!!111".
    Its 48 hds in a 4U case. 48HDs is about 600W under full load.
    If you compare this to the fact that there are dual-socket - dual core servers out there that push 300W through a 1U case, thats nothing.

    Also, a 4U case allows the use of nice fat 12cm fans in the front, while the horizontal backplane allows for free airflow (in contrast to vertical ones like used before)

    You seem to misunderstand how this works.
    The force of the casimir effect is not normal to the surface in that case.
    Think about it: the force is the gradient of the potential energy. Moving this thing down wont change the energy. So there is no force :) (there would be a torque, of course, which could be easily missinterpredated)

    And the reason why wedges and such arent used (in fact, you use sphere-segments with a _large_ sphere radius) is that its near impossible to get surfaces smooth enough for an observable effect.

    I know of studies back in the last century that showed 2D maps of eye-dwelling time on typical page layouts. Those are just made with the typical display-mounted eye-trackers. (They showed for example that the "logo top left" style is so common people search for something there even if the particular page didnt show anything there...

    Thats something i never understood (mapping mouse-buttons to keys).

    Every game since q2 lets you just assign all functions you want to mouse-1,2,3...6,7,8.
    So why should i map them to keys and bind those in the game, using a bloaty driver package (i never touched the install cd on my latest logitec), blocking the _real_ functions of those keys, for no gain at all?
