Seeing that I can read this... slashdot is late as usual:). I'm 4000 km east of Moswcow and we noticed that something went wrong when I couldnt buy airplane tickets. The cashiers didnt know anything only that their systems running some custome software had hang. Later I noticed that internet also died. Looks like it was local to the southern part of Moscow and many Moscovites from the North havent noticed anything.
Of course Moscow is alike a state of it own both in are and population.
I dont have a problem with laying off "dead wood". But 13K people???? Did they just wake up one morning and found out that 13K people that they have spent lots of $$ training are no longer needed?
If so than IBM is really in deep shit. I think not. I think that they have found out that a few divisions are not makaing profits and took the easiest route of just axing *everyone*. The smart thing woul;d havebeen to view thsese trained people as an asset and look for ways to restructure the poor performoing departments.
Myabe naive, I've necer worked fopr a firm the size of IBM, but I know how hard it is and how long it takes to bring even one new empoyee up to speed. To me getting rid of so m,any skilled people is insane.
There is one advantage tho. Even if you dont succeed after dropping out atleast you wont be like the ones who did get a formal education and has been outsourced while still having 100K+ in student loans.
Heh, I'm Russian and I've just read it, gotta put it on p2p too. Hope some brave Iraqi fighters get it and use the tactical information contained in it to blow up some more american fashist occupiers. heck I check icasualties.org every day for the daily dose of crispy americans. I also find stories in local american press of the ones left w/o legs and arms particularly touching.
Going publick provides a lot of funds for gowth and expanding the business. I think if you do it at the right time you can really jumpstart the company.
Everytime computers for the poor nations come up there are posts like this. I'm starting to suspect that Americans are simply afraid of potential competition coming from developing countries.
You'd be much better off if India first provided every citizen with relible clean water (which wouyld have taken forever) instead of pursuing hi-tech development. But it seems to be working out fine for them. Sure they have millions in squalor but also tens of millions of educated middle-class people who are bringing their country into the future. If a development country wants to ever be more than a banana republic exporting crops to the First World they have to think about computers and network infrastructure even if most of their citizens dont yet have enough food and live in straw huts.
How about I dont kill people so you shouldn't either. We strongly believe that enslaved software is one of the most horrible and morally repugnant things in the world. There is room for ethics and morality in software engineering, something that enslaves you cannot be the best tool for the job.
This kinda story made me run and install Debian on my PowerBook. The recent stories really convinced me that its insane to trust my data to proprietary vendors especailly the ones run by such essentric characters as Steve and Larry.
Women want immediate gratification. They have no patience working towards a remote goal for 40+ years. Ths why there almost no women among top scientists and coders, They just dont have the dedication for that kind of thing.
Yet your so called "software" is still shipped full of bugs. Agian Free Software trumpes all over closed source. Heck, Debian has a fromal testing processand is infinetly more stable that any version of NT I ran.
It doesn't work on individuals, it works on populations. Worker bees dobnt breed but the genes still exist in bee species, because its god for the species as a whole to have them. Same with homosexuals who are smarter and more creative than general polulation. They are just more specialized humans.
I used to like Linuse's "just for fun" and "I'm an engineer" attitude. Now I see what lack of ethics and moral code can lead to in ANY field. I say SHAME ON YOU LINUS.
Dont worry that kind of unpatriotic russian is in the minoirty now. Go immigrate your worthless scum!! PUting will bring us to the NEW EMPIRE and soon RUSSIAN soldiers will wash their feet in the atlantic ocean!!!
Nice fantasy. Any good Russain programmer is immediatly snatched by either an offshore-development firm or a russian branch of a US megacorp. There is not really such thing an uemplyed russian top-notch programmer.
The person earning minumum wage clearly makes a far greater scacrifice than BG. He could donate 90%+ of his wealth and still afford a luxurious lifestyle. He didnt sacrifice a thing.
Too funny... youv just described my company, especially the "funny pictures" bit.. LOL and 50 drive shares with... MORE FUNNY PICTURES!!
Hey, *jondiercs*! I know you are a really cute blond chick, I wish you would close your iBook and take a break from Slashdot so I could talk to you!
You are right. Or just turn off the electricity. For a month. This is how the world will end.

Welcome our new Dark Overlords!
Ok thanks. I think I'll just go and club a baby seal now.
You dont have to actuall live there. Just sell your tech to a company in SV.

I'm sorry but something that enslaves you cannot be the best tool for the job by definition.

America is not expensive. Your lifestyle IS. $40k is more than an average American FAMILY makes. And they are not poor.
Apple's own developer docs state that it's FreeBsd+Netbsd. (on mach)

Maybe its because we don't want to get dependant on a free-beer software. Think about BitKeeper.
