    What I don't understand is how they can sell better support then the authors of ther code, who have the ultimate knowledge of the inner workings od the system? Even under GPL you still have the advantages over the ppers aas the one who gets to know the code first.

    If someone wants stagnant knowldge created by stale University professors there are alredy plenty of options for that. But please dont change the Wikipedia to fit the academic model. I for once believe that a bright kid or college student can see the light of the Truth just as well or better than a professor with 50 certifications.

    I would be scared of the future where Google inteferes with my searches by applying its own ideas regarding which OS is more secure or which path of cancer treatment is mainstream. Certainly as a firm practioner of homeopathy I would get really mad if they started actively sensoring in favour of treatment and drugs whose side-effects will kill you faster than thr actual desease if left untreated.

    This is so US centric and will hurt Linux adoption in developing countries, I'm doing linux related work for a company in a country where $200 is more than 2 monthly salaries. In short, I really think there should be a waiver for at the very least non-commercial entities. And from what I know even in the US $200 can opften mean for a couple of guys whether tjhey will payu rent for the month or sleep outdoors.

    On the other hand GPL could actually be beneficial for business. Watch how Carmack chose GPL instead of BSD for the q3 source license. Relseasing their changes as GPL also ensures that their competitors wont be able to simply appropriate the code.

    I believe GPL says that you have to prove the source at reasonable cost. It doesnt make set up a full-blown server. They could just state that anyone who want it should pay a small amount for a cd with source.

    Well, the top of the line PC that I want still cost over $3K. Doesnt chgange a thing, even the early -mid 90s a system enough to learn programming could be had for much less. Heck, Linus started on his Unix clonbe on a 386 and before had a variety pof other no-so expensive systems.

    Hell StarDock also did the famous Galactic Civilization for Os/2, it had a really greate AI that run in a separate thread. I remmber talking to someonje from Stardoick aboyt doing a windows port and they said it couldn be done because of winbdows limitations. They did finally release it for win32 2 years ago.

    The girls family is probaly pretty well off thanks to their father. There is huge competetion to get on the UN peacekeepinjg force as the pay starts at about 1K$ a month which is a small fortune in Pakistan

    I dont know whats scraier a 10 y/o doing proffessional windows development or the fact that she considers BG an "ideal person" ;/
    We must do something to couner the relentless dark side attack on the young minds. It's be nice if some LUG members from Pakistan showed up at her doorstep and had a nice talk with her explaining why BG is evil and install Linux with a noice GNU development enviroment. None of the mono stuff, purhaps as a compromise JSDK+Emacs+JDE

    Purhaps I'm being naive but honestly how can one person replace a math teacher, a physics, chemistry, literature, socilology, foriegn labguage and a dozen of other teachers? Maybe it's different in the US but here in Russia these subjects are taught by different people each having a degree from a pedagogical college in their specific field. It's like several ful-time jobs! This leads me to believe that atleast one of the parent has to be "stay at home" full time teacher. So afrer graduating college with multiple majors and minors the parent has to dedicate his life to being and overworked home teacher who probaly also has to do all other house-work while the other spouse is working to provide for everyone.

    If people of China chose to live like that and voluntarily gave up the rights, than I would have to accept it. What you falt to understand is that it's not made by the People belonging to a different culture. It's a choice made by 0.00001% of ruling elite, and thus no matter how imperfect US is it cannot be considered morally eqilivalent.

    Hi, I've read several of your posts and you do express interesting ideas. However I find them superficial and indicating you have little real experience with other cultures, I bet you have never travelled to one of those parts of the world where according to you people are voluntarily choosing oppression and rejecting "western-style" freedom (in favour of Iranian-style freedom" I suppose?). Your moral relativism is repulsive, I was born in Soviet Union in the 70s, there was no such thing as "Soviet-style freedom", I'm sickened by your ideas that we somehow "chose" to be controlled by a totalitarian government, to be unable to speak our mind, have unsensored access to information, practice religion, etc. To think so of us or of the Iranians is to believe that we are somehow subhuman, being happy with settling for less than people in the US have. I believe that these are some of *basic* desires of every human being and I'm thankful to the US for continuing to bring the light of Freedom into this world.
