  1. which patents? on SCO Sues IBM for Sharing Secrets with Unix and Linux · · Score: 1

does anyone know which patents exactly SCO is claiming IBM infringed upon, by open sourcing them with the Linux community? Off the top of my head, I can recall IBM open sourcing JFS, but... i don't think SCO invented JFS...

  3. RIAA, MPAA, IDSA, and the BSA on Dismal Failure of Internet Filters In Australia · · Score: 2, Insightful
    from the article...

But product developers claim the technology works where there is a real financial incentive to make it work, as in corporations.

    also from the article...

"ISPs don't want people using very effective filters," he said. "They want people to be downloading as much information as possible - that's how they make their money."

it seems to me as if they're targeting the wrong corporations, heh. i mean, considering the past actions of the RIAA, MPAA, IDSA, and the BSA, they seem to think they have all the incintive in the world to do this... so... if Australlia wants censorship, they should have the copyright mongers of America do it - not ISP's! i mean, sheesh, Australlia - what were you thinking!?

it'll be interesting to see how the "Tejas" processor compares to the Transmeta Crusoe - currently, the least power intensive x86 compatable cpu out there...

also... if you're currious about PCI Express, this link seems to be pretty... informative:

and is anyone else disappointed that the new "Grantsdale" chipset isn't supporting rambus ram!? i know i am :(

  6. environmentaly unsafe on Should We Change the Weather Even If We Can? · · Score: 1
we cut down entire forests to suite our needs, but then, some time later, we find that doing so has endangered lots of species, and overall, has caused a lot of harm, in general. i would think this would do the same thing. we adjust the weather to fit our needs, and we really mess up everything that is suited to that particular weather pattern already. so i can see environmentals calling foul on this one...

and not only that, but what about skywriters? there would be some tough, new competition there, hehe.

  9. naive on Palm Tungsten Models Reviewed · · Score: 4, Informative
The new OS allows Palms to begin catching-up with some of the things rival Pocket PCs can do, such as watching short video clips, downloading digital audio or photo files and even playing graphics-intensive interactive games.

My Palm m505 already has video clips on it, thanks to MGI's PhotoSuite, which came *included* with the Palm m505. As for it being able to do wave files... so what? PCM Wave files are big. One song takes around 40mb. With 16mb, we'll only be getting maybe audio clips of thirty seconds. So what's the point of having it? And one last gripe... graphics-intensive games are also usually space intensive - Diablo 2 didn't come on 3 CD's because of it's story line, I can tell you that much!

  10. not much difference on MIT OpenCourseWare Now Online · · Score: 0
Aside from being presented with a universal and nice layout, there isn't much difference between OpenCourseWare, and the classes homepages, themselves! Compare these two:

    http://ocw.mit.edu/18/18.06/f02/index.html
    http://web.mit.edu/18.06/www/

The layout sucks on the second one, but all the material is there.

Conclusion: MIT could have just saved money, and made an index of teacher's homepages. Or maybe they could just give teachers limited accounts - they *must* follow a template to get their homepage on the web, and then it is automatically listed. Now, if OpenCourseWare was able to make more pages, like that above page for linear algebra, for classes that wouldn't normally even have homepages that'd be something. That'd be much more useful. That would warrent the hype OpenCourseWare has recieveed - not this.

  11. public domain software on Public-Domain Bookmobile Hits the Road · · Score: 3, Interesting

it's a shame they won't be giving away public domain software that wasn't originally released in the public domain... I mean, I can see books having really long copyrights, because people can enjoy those for a long time, but software? If Windows 3.1 was being enjoyed by any substantial number of people, Microsoft would still support it, but they don't. Why on earth should people not be able to use this legally, without paying for it, for the next 120 years!? I don't really care if Mickey Mouse is public domain, or not, but for the love of god, why the heck isn't Windows 3.1 public domain!?
