In order to stop the CD from auto-running, you simply have to hold down the shift key as you put it in (in windows). Once it spins down, you can release the shift key, and do whatever you want with it. Just make sure you don't double click the icon in my computer, or it'll still autorun. You've gotta right click and choose open.

  5. University of Cincinnati Is Cracking Down Too on Uni Students Slammed For Music Swapping · · Score: 1

Some students at the University of Cincinnati have also gotten in trouble for file sharing. You can check out the story on UC's Newsrecord. These students were visited by two IT people as well as four campus police officers. The students that got in trouble were using Direct Connect to share files. Some students had 150+ gigs shared. All students that were on the Direct Connect server had their internet connections shut off (in the dorms) and the people who were sharing a lot got in major trouble. As the newsrecord article says, the university decided, however, to keep all the consequences internal instead of letting the music industry, etc, deal with them. Just goes to show that if you aren't careful and don't have ways to hide your IP address, you can be easily traced.

  6. Re:I just bought that yesterday! on TurboTax DRM Writes to Your Boot Sector?! · · Score: 2, Informative
I took a look at the EULA for Turbotax:
Intuit does not warrant that the Software or Services are secure, free from bugs, viruses, interruption, errors, or other program limitations. Some states do not allow the exclusion of implied warranties, so the above exclusions may not apply to you. In that event, any implied warranties are limited in duration to 60 days from the date of purchase of the Software. However, some states do not allow limitations on how long an implied warranty lasts, so the above limitation may not apply to you. This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may have other rights that vary from state to state.
In other words, by installing this software, they could legally plant a virus (not including DRM viruses) and you would have to repercussions. Even worse, they could put a trojan on your computer and watch how you spend your money, etc and sell it to advertising companies.

    Even worse:
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, INTUIT AND ITS REPRESENTATIVES ARE NOT LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES (INCLUDING DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF BUSINESS, LOSS, CORRUPTION OR THEFT OF DATA, LOSS OF PROFITS OR INVESTMENT, OR THE LIKE), WHETHER BASED ON BREACH OF CONTRACT, BREACH OF WARRANTY, TORT (INCLUDING NEGLIGENCE), PRODUCT LIABILITY OR OTHERWISE, EVEN IF INTUIT OR ITS REPRESENTATIVES HAVE BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES AND EVEN IF A REMEDY SET FORTH HEREIN IS FOUND TO HAVE FAILED OF ITS ESSENTIAL PURPOSE. IN NO EVENT DOES INTUIT ASSUME ANY LIABILITY TO ANY PARTY OTHER THAN YOU ARISING OUT OF YOUR USE OR INABILITY TO USE THE SOFTWARE OR SERVICES.
In otherwords, no, you can't sue them. They can do whatever the heck they want to your computer and it is not their responsibility to fix it. That's the *cough* beaty of EULAs...
  7. Re:User vs IP address on File-sharing and AOL · · Score: 1

Why doesn't Kazaa and the other file sharing programs just find some way to re-route your IP address. That way, no one really knows what your address is, and you can still get your music. Even better, route it overseas so that it can't be forced to give up any information. That's just my two cents...

I totally agree. I worked for a summer at a school district, and when you have to re-ghost an entire school (actually, we ended up having to do it multiple times), there's nothing easier and cheaper than a stack of floppy disks. And, if one goes bad, they're nice to chuck against the wall.

  10. Re:floppy on Dell Dropping The Floppy · · Score: 1

Actually, Dell now has floppy-less BIOS upgrades. You download an .exe file, and it restarts your computer, installs the BIOS upgrade, then restarts again, and you're on your way...then again, it probably only works one windows. So, if you have linux, you're out of luck.

Yep, i got the whole first paragraph before the server crashed:

    "Introduction

The employment landscape for Software Engineers, Computer Scientists, and Computer Programmers is far from static. In order for educators and job seekers to remain competitive, they must stay abreast of changes in the field.

Computer Science blends the theoretical with the practical. Though most of the fundamental concepts in Computer Science remain unchanged, the tools change constantly. One of the most influential tools is the programming language.

To keep up with employment trends in programming languages I have searched the most popular job search engines (monster.com, dice.com, and hotjobs.com) to catagorize the number of job listings by the programming languages mentioned in each listing. Each search engine is different. As such, a description of the search techniques is also presented.

I hope that you find this informal inquiry to be interesting. Of course, if you would like me to add another language to the search please let me know at eric.r.turner(at)bitbreather.com.
