I'm getting kind of sick of this type of story. It seems like every few months their are stories released about some space object coming close to earth and 'just barely missing'.

Though I am curious to know if their is an official plan for countering a colliding asteriod? What would our options be realistically if an asteriod going to impact in a matter of months?

Interesting stuff, http://www.mp3car.com sells products for it and has forums with pictures/info on finsihed projects. Worth a look.

Their is a fine line between being rude and unprofessional and 'asking questions rigorously'. I'm still unsure as to who I support. I can say that I've heard from both sides and seen much of the material released from Michael Moore & supporters and find most of it to be highly inaccurate to the point of being outright lies. I don't see how Bush was lead to ramble. He was constantly interrupted and given another question before he even had time to ramble. Sure you can point out a mistake and emphasize that but frankly I think any individual, experianced politician or not, will have trouble keeping an accruate line of thought when they are interrupted with additional questions during their response. Also I do watch the BBC regularly and agree that European news is better than American sources in pretty much everyway. However I don't see the same interviewing style on the BBC that I did in that Irish interview.

  5. Open Office on Anatomy Of A Bug In Microsoft Office · · Score: 2, Interesting

Open Office has crashed on me many more times than Word. I agree that Word is cluddered but their are many other people that use all those features. I tried Open Office... it crashed a lot, and even if it didn't I'm not all that impressed by it. It's basically Word with less (much less) features and it crashes more often (at least for me). I too am no microsoft fanboy, I'm not a fan boy of everything really. I like everything. Open Office is nice but their is a difference between being better and exaggerating something to fit ones own agenda. Personally I haven't seen anything come out of open source that doesn't have an equal closed source alternative. (in terms of each has it's goods and it's bads.)

  6. It's a great idea. on In-Game Advertising Breaks Out · · Score: 1

I'm really not so sure in terms of console games since in my opinion they are rather limited. However I think in terms of PC games especially the truely next generation titles that take years of development and funding, stuff like this is only a good thing. In-game advertising is probably one of the best ideas to hit the gaming scene in awhile. I also think Valve is heading in the right direction with Steam and the idea of online distribution and advertising. It's true that ingame advertising isn't really a new concept but I feel aside from sports titles it's being slowly implemented. Also any form of well conceived advertising (ie: advertisements that are poorly done/intrusive and are executed properly) is long overdue in terms of being put correctly into all forms of computer media. (ie: not only gaming, but websites etc. ... a lot of people have tried but it has to be done right.)

  7. Star Trek on Star Trek XI: Romulan Wars? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I haven't gone to the theaters to see an ST flick since first contact and I doubt I will anytime soon. At best I rent it or watch it when it comes on TV and only if their isn't a better alternative. The plots are ridiculous and it's painfully obvious that they are going to make as many movies as they can to drain out the franchise until people finally stop going to see this junk. Star Trek should definitely take at least a 5-10 year break from television/movies and come back as a revival just like TNG. Their was a reason TNG was the number one rated drama on television... you'd think paramount would want to bring back the golden years but the bottom line as has been stated before is BERMAN needs to be removed.

For the record telesync is when audio is captured directly off the reel and a high quality camcorder is setup in an empty theather to capture the film on as best as possible. telecine captures everything directly off the reel and is usually as good as vhs/dvd. both methods usually accomplished with help of theater employee's.

People are always looking for soundfonts and high quality sound fonts are usually in the 128 mb area. They are just a few ideas. Just do a few searches... that can easily be done.

I understand the point. I just don't feel kids should be burdened with more than they already are. They have so much to deal with at school , socially... and at home. Why add on daily discussions about how 'they need to learn to hate bill gates' and use linux. I never said I supported windows ... I just think open source in general tends to be less capitalistic. (I don't believe all knowledge should be free. I don't think anything should be free.) My response was directed more towards those people who responded that they deny internet access to their children from windows pc and make them use linux. Or doing things like "you can't play that game unless you learn howto set it up on linux first." If anything that will just make their kids resent using linux. Ultimately the way I feel is that the person should want to use linux or be interested in it instead of trying to force them. When they are ready they will come around.

I'd still rather live here then a country that thinks nothing of relocating my entire town, along with hundreds of thousands of other people from homes their famlies have had for over 1,000 years for a public works project that will be usless in 30 years.

China is a much older country with a much higher population and their laws reflect this. I don't know the details surronding any "town moving" stories but thats not exactly "horrific" anyway.

I'd rather live here then in a country that basically forces people to have abortions.

Again this isn't "horrific". China has a huge 6+ billion (guess) population it's reasonable for the government to limit "1 baby per family". If someone chooses to break that policy they must get an abortion. Abortions are legal here... despite personal religious beliefs it's just stopping abunch of cells from turning into a baby. It's not murder and it's not cruel.

I'd rather live here then in a country that kills you for a minor drug violation.

They are just serious about stopping crime and/or drug distribution/use. Do you honestly think the U.S. REALLY tries? We could stop drug use just as easily. Think of how many jobs their are that are involved in stopping drug use. Their are drug dealers in the U.S. because they know if they are caught they will be released in a day. If you were shot for dealing/using drugs NO ONE would do it. The truth is truely illegalizing (and cracking down) on drug dealing would result in a blow to our own economy and would all but obliterate the economy of countries who rely on drug manufactoring for survival.

And people like you who love to bash me as an 'egotistic idiot'... I have nothing against Chinese people. I just don't like the Chinese government, and to that extent, I'm happy for all of the people of Chinese descent who have made it over here.

Honestly a lot of negativity towards the Chinese tend to just be exaggerated 'stories'. I'm not saying they are perfect, I'm sure their were atrocities but hey, the U.S. isn't perfect either. I think for a formerly Communist country they are coming along. If memory serves they will be holding the upcoming Olympics so it's not that bad. Bottom line... don't believe everything you read. Especially on the internet. Also their are far worse places than China to live... personally I think the Middle East & Russia are the worst places to live. (and not because of terrorism)

As for China trying to become IT independant... hats off to them. They aren't the only country to want to do that. I remember a post about Germany wanting to switch from Windows because of alleged spyware. It's naive to think that the U.S. doesn't use IT to spy on other countries.
