    On an older car like my "economy" model bmw an ECu will reprogram my car to use 92 instead of 87 gasolone giving me more power while not doing much if anything to fuel economy. Second these chips can reprogram an automatic tranny to have a higher rpm shift rate = faster acceleration without adding power. Thirdly these chips can take off the electric govern allowing the car to reach its full speed potential.

    10% may be for cars that are better optimized by manufacturers these days but older cars like my 87 bmw can see a gain of 20% in hp. Older cars can benefit greatly from ECU's. Even newer cars can still benefit even if they do not get an boost in hp. ECUs can do other things like change the rpms at which an autonatic switches gears effectivingly making accerleration quicker without boosting hp at all.

    If you read the info here http://www.segway.com/shop/amazon.html then you will notice that 4950 pays for teh highest performing model, which means there is a cheaper model that must sell for less. It is most likely the model used in private testing and since it is most likely in mass production it can be made and sold for cheaper with the proper demand.

    Will these be in some form of SCSI since IDE would probalby not hold up for this unless you had a very large buffer?


    Why SCSI when Apple and the others will have released Gigwire (read Firewire 2.0) which will be much better. At first 1.6 gb/sec then on to 3.2 gb/sec.

    According to the Mayan calendar, something significant will happen and change the world as we know it. Some say it is the end of the world (T. McKenna for instance), and others feel it will be a turning point for technology, perhaps turning on us. What ever it is, one thing is for sure, the Mayan calendar has never been wrong before.

    Now this is not meant to put the blame on any one, as we are all responsible, but some computer parts are made over seas. Its not like we are sending them to Africa where they dont build computer parts (at least that I am aware of).

    Although chips are getting faster and faster people seem to forget that most people dont use a laptop as a portable supercomputer. The average user is gonna write papers and browse the web or soem kind of business application ... not that they wont do other things, but the fact is a laptop was never meant to replace the desktop market. Transmeta not only gives intel competetion, but they assure the consumer that intel will have to do at least a little innovation to make their product worthy. A chip that is fast enough for non video games and has an extended battery life compared to ther brands is a good thing. It is what the goal of laptop makers should be. gaming on a laptop is teh niche market, and thats what alienware computers are for.

    " The other $255 pays for IE and WMP" Unlike say a company like apple (hardware and some software), MS is a software company. Items like WMP and IE are incentives to use their products. Without additional free products why would anyone upgrade when every program they used would have an upgrade price. Also Internet explorer and parts used in WMP are apart of the OS.

    And IBM has some that run much faster than that in the Power4 serious. However, you must have missed the part where it said commercially avaible to the consumer. I dont think average Joe can pick up this secret chip you talk about at CompUSA.

    however im not a big gamer so i dont know how those run. On 867 machine with 1.5 gb ram everything seems fine. I can burn a cd, rip a cd, use aim, use a web browser and listen to music all at the same time and I do a lot of the time. Of course i took a tip from unix/linux crowd and made a seperate partition for the swap file - http://www.resexcellence.com/hack_html_01/09-14.01 .html
