  1. Re:Caffeine Addiction on Will Caffeine Cause Health Problems? · · Score: 1
    Indeed, indeed.

I developed a severe reaction to caffeine after several years of hardcore coffee guzzling (I'd start the day with 4-6 _strong_ cups and have many more throughout the day). Now my digestive system shuts down at the slightest hint of said stimulant. When I was forced to go 'cold-turkey'...Ow. Very painful for several days. But I also found that massive amounts of water helped. And drinking a lot of water is incredibly healthy (I manage around a gallon a day), helping you lose weight, gain muscle and generally feel better.

    ...And I concur.

I too will never again buy a CD (DVD, tape, mp3) represented by a major (read: RIAA) label, ever again. Their greed has far outpaced everthing else, and I refuse to be party to it.

Musicians, hear this: signing with a major label is fast becoming the best way to lose everything you hold dear. Stay indie, stay strong, and keep the real music coming. Being associated with a conglomeration of greed that enjoys financially raping the future of our country for kicks...is no way to spread your art.

The RIAA needs to be finished, and I have no problem helping to drive the biggest, fattest splintery stake available through their collective puny and heartless torsos.

For me, this is no longer about piracy and art. This is about principles, decency and humanity.

What? Alternative vehicles don't have enough performance? In Maine they do (and anyone who tells that it's impossible is lying).

Check out the UMaine Solar Vehicle Team's projects.

The Phantom Sol (fully electric) has a top speed of well over 120MPH, 400ft/lbs of torque, and a range of over 100 miles at highway speeds (65-75 mph). The 0-60mph time is around 8-9 seconds, depending on road conditions.

Using a 280HP 9" DC motor with 1800-amp controller (yes, 1800 DC amps - there's some thick wires inside), a 6-speed Camaro transmission and a 75-lb dual-friction racing clutch, the drive train is still relatively inexpensive (about $4000). And it has the performance of a slightly modified V-8 block. And all that's backed-up with 40 large lead-acid batteries. (another $4000)

It's street legal...and a joy to drive :oD

And since this always comes up:
Yes, electricity is often generated by burning oil. But burning it in a power plant is far more efficient than burning it in your car. And, with electric cars...the potential is there for green energy, should such a situation arise.

All waveforms on said lab function generator are composed fundamentally of sinusoids, so there is no actual perfectly clean signal. I have indeed hooked a good scope up to it and (out of curiosity) examined the point at which the signal visibly breaks down.

I'm well aware that no measurement equipment can be hooked into a circuit without affecting the output to some degree. I generally assume that most people realize that fact.

I guess what this comes down to is that I'm guilty of not reading the article close enough. Oh well. 10nH, eh?

It is indeed an impressive piece of hacked hardware. Nice scope, btw.

  9. Re:ok on Recycling Parts From Dead Motherboards · · Score: 1
also known as a 'function' generator. Though this one only generates a square waveform, and a dirty one at that. An expensive digital function generator makes nearly perfect square, sawtooth, sine, triangle and dc leveling waveforms.

To further the explanation - a function generator outputs a known waveform at a known frequency with known amplitude so that, like ocelotbob said, a given circuit can be tested. You can use it to simulate output of various single components, thereby testing only a little piece of a bigger circuit, or it can be used to simulate a standard (or nonstandard) input to a bigger circuit, and see how that circuit performs when connected 'scope.

It is an essential tool to have when working with complex electronics and digital logic.

(I instruct people ~not~ to directly send me e-cards, rather just paste the link in an email they personally send)

In order to make the Hotmail account even usable (I've had it since waaaaaaaay before hotmail went M$), I have a safelist set up. When I'm about to make an online purchase from a new company or recieve a message from a new email list, I temporarily shut off the spam filter, recieve the messages, and then add the originating address to the safe list. I turn the filter back on, and now I've got a fairly reliable method of giving out my email and not getting spammed. Its not really that much of a hassle, either.
