  2. Re:at last "SELECT ... FOR UPDATE NOWAIT" on PostgreSQL 8.1 Available · · Score: 1

    Personally, I use the old "Oracle" trick... only "lock" if you have to.

    You remember the contents of the record when you originally "selected" the record (without any FOR UPDATE clause) and in the update statement, you compare the current contents of the record with the contents the original contents.  If the record has changed then you'll get "0 records updated" and you know that "eh - that didn't work!" and you can then go into an exception routine.

    The idea is that you will SELECT many times (so don't lock) and only UPDATE and small % of the records - and a smaller % will be in contention.  So only do work when you have to.

    e.g. (sorry about the Oracle syntax - but I'm sure you can convert for your purposes)

    SELECT custname, custadd1
    INTO :p_oldname, :p_oldadd1
    FROM customer
    WHERE custid = :p_custid;

    (1 row selected)

    UPDATE customer SET
    custname = :p_newname,
    custadd1 = :p_newadd1
    WHERE custid = :p_custid
    AND custname = :p_oldname
    AND custadd1 = :p_oldadd1

    IF SQL%ROWCOUNT = 0 THEN
      ...error code...
    END IF

    Yes - it involves extra typing - but if you want it done right - then do it right first time!!!

    By asking for it, she will know if she is really "appriciated" as a trouble shooter. If they say "no" then you know that they just want her to "knock heads together" and then go back to her day job. Good for the boss as he get's the praise and profit, and no increase in salary costs.

    If she get's the training then she should take on a role to "train the PM's" and stop these projects going tit's up in the first place. Good for the companies reputation?

    If they don't then it's obvious that your wife has a brain, is not afriad to use it, so go get another job!

    In German!

    It was bad enought that any comments were in German, and all accounting terms (stock on hand, out of order, balance) but RPG limited you to 6 or 8 character variable names. And it was someones bright idea that the first two characters were used to identify the program.
    Then they used acroymns. Examples include GBKXA1 (always uppercase).

    Above all that, RPG used indicators. These true/false 'flags' could be used to condition code, and 3 of these indicators could be concatenated on a single line.

    Then you can set the indicators by placing it in columns from 60 to 65 (if I remember) based on the result field being zero, positive or negative.

    Even better was the commenting function. RPG was (is) strictly column based. Place a * in column six and the line is a comment. How many times, when trying to work out what a program function was doing did I find that the code was in fact commented out.

    Missing rule? Carefully hide open and close comment tags in the code
