You nailed it! I've become pigeon holed working in C and Fortran (engineering stuff) and even though I graduated first in my graduate class (MS CIS just 2 years ago) I've had a hell of a time moving from my current job to something else.
Everybody wants Java. There are some.NET and C# jobs but no where near the number of Java and C++ jobs (in this area, Cincinnati Ohio). I've got 15 years experience in some of the most technical types of coding and I still sit in interviews where they're concerned I don't have a Java certification even though I've been using the language (off and on) for 5 years. I'd love to work in it full time but it's tough to get in due to HR stupidity.
The logic of inexperience and the numbers he provided from sources that he couldn't confirm. Anyone that would choose socialism as preferable to capitalism (that's over 25) in this day an age is either an idiot or the child of wealthy parents.
Here, let me borrow from typical socialist news tactics:
"Congratulations," "kicked" "ass in this argument. You are wise"
Thanks guy! Glad you see it my way.
"Rei""have ignorance and idiotic ranting."
Yeah, it's too bad everyone can't be as smart as me....
I think this takes us back to where we started. If you are so enthusiastic about being a socialist, why fight this nasty, horrible, money grubbing country full of capitalists and go live somewhere that's socialist. Hell, the UK is great (if you're wealthy), you seem to like the Canadian life expectancy and, after all, you get all the protection of the most powerful country in the world for free (and can still bitch about it).
It's amazing to me how many Amercans admire socialism yet none want to live in an existing socialist country. That's not a love it or leave it statement, it's a quit bitching and go live the way you want to. Why stick around if we're so terrible?
That's the problem with a country as free as this one. People become complacent thinking that all the "rights" they have here are no big deal. The grass becomes greener just about everywhere they look because they don't appreciate what they've got.
This is the greatest country in the world, my friend. Growing, changing, constantly evolving from one thing to the next. Socialism is going extinct (like it's friend communisim) and has been for some time. Leave your internet and your books behind for a few years and look at the reality of the countries you so admire. Go visit one or two (if they allow you in). Unless you're a lot less intelligent than you seem I'm sure you'll have a lot more appreciation for what we've got here.
"Does any of this seem *reasonable*? One of the things that makes America great is that you're free to hold your own viewpoints and strive for them in politics. And other people are equally free to differ, and strive for their views. America is an open marketplace of ideals, with the goal being that the best ideas will prevail."
You're totally missing what I'm suggesting. I'm not saying that if you disagree with me you should move, I'm saying that if you think socialism is a better system, why not try living under a socicalist system (and find out what it's really about, which is retaining all power and wealth within a VERY small circle of people that answer to no one) rather than trying to change the US, which is doing just fine (see my previous list of numbers) thank you very much.
"So, when Clinton came in and raised taxes, the US economy got worse, huh?"
Actually it started to suck when George B. senior raised them (Read My Lips... 1990, byebye portfolio). Clinton actually had enough sense to leave the economy alone (for the most part) but towards the end of his second term the lack of stimulus really started to show. Allowing certain monopolies to grow unabated with few regulatory checks (thanks Hilary) also led to some big issues (Enron, Worldcom, MS, ect). NAFTA and the one world economy view didn't help either.
"How about back in the 1940s, when the US raised taxes and kept them high up to the 1960s (80-90% range for the top bracket). Devestated the US economy, right? (oh, wait, that was our nation's biggest boomtime)."
Winning a war can do some pretty dramatic things for an economy (You remember WWII don't you?). The fact that most of the taxation was going toward growth of industry (You know, the Military Industrial Complex, can you say, Thanks Ike!) led to tremendous growth that we'd not seen before or since. Why? Because taxation today goes toward helping children kill their babies (free, anytime and without parental consent), helping miniorities and women get further ahead of white men than they already are, and various political pocket linings. Yes, it's killing us.
"French exports to US; All numbers in millions of dollars 2003: Jan: 1,369.3 Feb: 1,313.8 Mar: 1,717.2 Apr: 1,567.5 May: 1,457.7 Jun: 1,520.8 Jul: 1,192.8 Aug: 1.265.3 Sep: 1,331.1 Oct: 1,438.9 Nov: 1,418.2 Dec: 1,460.4 2004: Jan: 1,485.1 Feb: 1,577.6 Mar: 2,111.6 Apr: 1,731.6 May: 1,827.5 (I don't have any more data than this)"
Don't know where you got this data either but I can grab some that refutes if you like.
"The "boycott" did no such thing. It's another case of jury-r igged data selection (actually, in this case, it looks more like a flat-out lie). In fact, France's trade ratio with the US improved (US exports to France in Jan. 2003 were about the same as May 2004, while their exports increased), so if anyone is boycotting anyone, the French are boycotting the Americans."
You're missinformed guy. Go to the source of the data and look again.
"You've got to stop getting your information from Newsmax and people like O'Reilly - they both make up stuff like this all the time. Besides, use some logic: O'Reilly's audience (even the audience of all cable news put together) is just too damn small. O'Reilly's typical audience is about 55,000. Even though who is in that 55,000 changes each show, there's only a certain subset of people who will ever be exposed to that. The vast majority of Americans have never even heard of O'Reilly's boycott. Most Americans have never even watched O'Reilly. A good portion of them have never even heard of him. The majority of people in the US just simply don't watch cable news; they don't care/they hate politics/and they don't want to be involved/they have other priorities. I mean, for god's sake, half of Americans *don't even vote*. They won't vote for president, and yet you think they're going to go out of their way to take part in a *boycott*?"
Your issue about taking a single data point and extrapolating is well taken. However I stand by the general intent of my message. Socialism is a failure and anyone that thinks otherwise should move to country where they can live under socialism and see for themselves. The downturn in the US economy can be traced directly to the raising of taxes by George Bush senior (more socialistic) in the late 80's and the continued growth of social programs and tax increases under Bill Clinton and Co (TM). The current up turn in the economy can be directly linked to GW's tax cut (capitalistic). When people are allowed to keep their money, things go well, when the government takes our money for it's own purposes, things go badly. Less governement == GOOD; More government == BAD.
I'd still like to know what you mean when you say "Europe". Europe is a group of countries that share the same general geographic area but in every other way they are fairly disparate. Point to some specific countries and I can give you more specific arguments.
As for O'Reilly's boycott, France's trade with the US dropped by $1 billion dollars since last year so, by all means, if you want to use that tactic against SCO, go for it. I'm with you buddy!
Maybe you look at your bloody graph. Then check their data. The total GDP of the US as of Q1, 2004 was, according to the US Dept of commerce, $11.5 Trillion (sorry, I was a little high) representing a growth of 3.9% for that Q1. France, for the same period, had a total GDP of $1.6 Trillion with a growth of 0.1% for that quarter (Wow! I guess Bill O'Reilly's sanctions are working). Germany, $2.3 Trillion with a whopping growth of -0.1% (that's right, und shranken). Spain had pretty good growth (not as good as the US, but still not bad) of 2.4% but, of course, their GDP is a weeny $885 billion. Poland had really good growth (though still not as good as the US) at 3.6% but, again, has a GDP just slightly larger than Bill Gates bank account. Do countries with a GDP that's less than some US companies actually qualify as countries? Shall I continue? Perhaps you should move to your favorite European country and enjoy ths spoils of their blossoming economies (NOT!).
What you are saying is very interesting but you trivialize the difference between socialism and capitalism by dismissing them as both flawed.
The very concept of Socialism, that you distrbute what everyone makes to suite everyones need, is absurd in it's face. You can't expect people to behave fairly. They never have and they never will and any system that absolutely depends on that fairness to work, will fail. That's why every socialist economy on the planet is either stagnent, failing or failed. Capitalism can be abused and it certainly can get ugly. However, at it's core, capitalism mirrors natural selection whereby it nurtures the strong and kills off the weak. It's not pretty but (given sufficient legal controls, checks, balances) it works pretty darn well. It has, inarguably, had more success than any other system in the world to date.
Right, bouncing around at $60 trillion dollars is not as good as shooting up from $200 billion to $700 billion. I sincerely hope you're not working in a math related field man...
You take Europe, I'll stick with the good ol' USA.
Oh yeah, western Europe is doing so much better than the terrible capitalistic US!! Give me a break. Why not join your friends and leave us poor conservative capitalists alone with our new cars and houses. See ya!
Many guests will simply spew the same, tired, scripted response that their ideology has burned into their soul. That's SPIN, not truth. When that happens O'Reilly (analysis, not news) goes after them and rightly so. If you've ever heard Lanny Davis speak he's a perfect example. He will never admit any wrong doing on the part of Bill Clinton in the Monica Lowenski case despite the fact the Clinton himself admits it and was found guilty of perjury and impeached. Lanny will drone on and on about how it's all about sex or right wing conspiracy or that we all just hate Bill Clinton, blaaa, blaaa, blaaa... That's spin and O'Reilly doesn't allow it and that's why people watch him. I don't always agree with him and sometimes he does seem rude but you've got to love his passion. Most commentators look like they could fall asleep during their interviews because the last thing they're going to do is make their guest uncomfortable. That just doesn't cut it for me. Get to the real questions and let the chips fall. If they get mad, oh well.
I assume you're talking about "The O'Reilly Factor" (my personal favorite) and the shouting is because he's (as he's fond of repeating to the pin heads of the world) not doing news he's doing news analysis (and he's passionate as hell, and that's a good thing). Ever read the Op/Ed section of your paper? There ya go. Brit Hume doesn't yell because he's reporting, not analysing. Get it? I knew you could!
Not even close!! If you were watching Peter Jennings when the GOP won congress (a few years ago) and his face turned white and he slurred "The republicans have taken over...". Yeah, that's fair and balanced. No agenda there. Give me break!
Gee, maybe why that's why Fox News has the most viewers?
"You, OTOH, are brainwashed if you don't have the ability to think for yourself and take the time to learn from multiple sources."
Yes, that's why I find it highly suspect when you attack Fox News specifically. Fox News is as legitimate a source of news as any other. To call it "fantastic" (I take that to be in the "fantastically untrue" sense) is to put forth the idea that other news outlet have no agenda. and that's being brain washed....
You're so brain washed it's amazing you didn't have to get Hillary's village to write your posting for you. You've got so much hate for Fox News, ever try watching Dan Rather (be in France). Good Lord, people finally get a chance to see a little bit of both sides and you're all for going back to getting your news from communists.
If you want to read a REALITY book, forget freaking "Runaway Jury" (John Grisham thinks everyone's and idiot but himself, classic liberal view, "Your too stupid to take care of yourself, let me do it") and try "Brainwashed" by Ben Shapiro. While you're at it, try opening your mind past your pre-programmed views. Use YOUR brain rather than depending on what's been put there by others...
I REALLY hate to agree with Pearly (Gates) but I've been saying the same thing for over a year. Why the heck do I need a piece of plastic that can warp, melt, get scratced and otherwise become useless when I can just keep it all on disk and whatever backup makes you feel happy. I mean, as the price of storeage continues to drop (geez, 400GB is now about $200!!) I think the line between what we used to think of as long term storage Vs archival storage, like DVD's, is going to get very fuzzy.
This is not the type of article I've come to expect from/.! If we continue to fear monger about the horrors of nuclear anything we'll still be using fossil fuels to power everything 100 years from now. Sure people were going to get hurt and will continue to get hurt by radiation as we continue to study and use nuclear energy. If you play with fire you will get burned. Just as there were accidents when people had fires in the their homes for heat and now I have a nice, safe little flame, right in the heart of my furnace in the basement of my home 24 hours a day 365 days a year. The technology has been refined and it's save and extremely useful. The US Navy has been using nuclear power for 50 years with a virtually perfect record of safety. The reactors are so safe and reliable they're sealed and only serviceable in dry dock. Yet they can provide 20 years worth of clean, safe, utterly reliable power to our war ships.
I'm sorry for the men that have paid for our early research with their lives and their health. We owe them our gratitude and respect. Strict rules for safety are certainly needed. I just can't believe the way the American people have allowed the ignorant media and simple fear to cause them to shun a source of energy with such incredible potential. Get over your fear and let the rest of us get on with advancing technology. If you want safety, don't kid yourself. It's an illusion anyway. When we let the idea that "somebody might get hurt" prevent us from exploring and seeking new technologies we're all doomed.
You'd think that HR departments and corporate management would wise up at some point but they never do.
I just went through two interviews with a major grocery store chain whose name rhymes with Croger. I was offered 50K/yr, no vacation the first year, 24x7 pager support (unpaid), but wait, that's not all. I would also get to pay for the privilege of parking and walking 5 blocks through the lovely downtown area (otherwise referred to as the decline of western civilization) just to arrive at my luxury mini-cube (or cell, whichever you prefer).
Mind you, I have 15 years experience writing engineering software in C, C++, Java along with a dozen other languages and administering just about any modern platform commonly found in business. Fortunately my current job is close to home and pays 22K more than they're offering (and actually features a vacation!). Why did they waste my time? My final conclusion: They're idiots... They actually looked shocked when I told them I wouldn't even consider a job that didn't offer any time off for 12 months.
Note: My writing abilities, unfortunately, do not appear up to the task of conveying SARCASM to, at least some,/. readers.
Sorry, my previous note really means:
I think that this is a WONDERFUL venture and worthy of our (meaning my) money. I was also commenting on the fact that if the government (dems and reps) would allow us to keep bit more of OUR (meaning my) money we would see more private funding to back this type of work instead of the wasted (not all but most) billions currently going to NASA (who has the best people in the world, handcuffed into a bureaucratic mess) to pay for the TENS OF THOUSANDS (yes, that's an accurate figure) of people that care for the freaking monetary sinkhole also known as the shuttle fleet.
I know I'm being a sarcastic jerk here but it's a very sore subject to me. I grew up wanting to work in aerospace and walk on the Moon and Mars and here we are 30 years later, doing less in space than we were in the 70's. I have multiple degrees in engineering and science and, though I have a well paying job, I feel like my work is for nothing but money. I hate the fact that we seem to prize sports figures (worthless) and entertainers (more worthless) more than the future of mankind and actually indoctrinate our kids into thinking more about multiculturalism and political correctness (I have school ages kids) than science and math and engineering.
It's just a crazy world to this techno geek and I don't see it getting any better at the moment. I just hope for the cycles that always come round and maybe SpaceShip1 is the beginning of one.
We could be using that money for better things. Like government programs that promote the health and welfare of our country. What a waste. I sure hope John Kerry gets in office so I can help carry more of the tax burden instead of using my money to invest in silliness like this.
Space ships.... what a silly thing to do with your money...
I've been using various Linux distros since 1995 and I've never encountered such a buggy release!
Most of it could be blamed on KDE 3.2.1 but that IS the most common Suse window manager. Between not being able to log out without locking up the X-Server (and no, cntl+alt BS doesn't recover a console so you have to reset or log in remotely) and the DHCP client refusing to allow KDE to load I think I've effectively demonstrated why we wouldn't want to use Linux at my company. I've been trying to get management to give it a try for years and now, this one experience, will effectively negate my efforts.
I know that not using KDE or installing a later, less buggy, release is simple. But the suites don't and the fact that an install that should take 1/2 day took 3 days is all they see. What the hell happened at Suse? I've never had this kind of trouble with an install.
Music is dead for EXACTLY the same reason so many other industries that require thought and creativity (engineering, software, TV shows...) are dying, corporate greed. Plain and simple. Nobody and nothing good comes from a profit first mind set. How many good products (or good anything for that matter) came from a group of people that said "OK, firstly, how do we make as much money as possible, then lets make our product."
We're grossly greedy and it shows. Quality is just something you do to get sales back up. Once you've got the sales you get rid of those damned expensive innovative, creative thinkers and hire the lowest cost workers possible. If you want to do good work that may not be the most profitable work, GOOD LUCK around here bub.
Comes from letting accountants and lawyers run the world (consumers) rather than producers.
Or should I say "Coool!" (sorry)...

This is not the type of article I've come to expect from /.!
Is there no end to the greed of these businesses?
"Anything wider and I get some weird feeling my head needs to be stretched."
No way! I use two 21" CRT's pushed together to get a nice wide screen and I feel fine. Of course my wife has always claimed I've got a big head....
Note: My writing abilities, unfortunately, do not appear up to the task of conveying SARCASM to, at /. readers.
least some,
Sorry, my previous note really means:
I think that this is a WONDERFUL venture and worthy of our (meaning my) money. I was also commenting on the fact that if the government (dems and reps) would allow us to keep bit more of OUR (meaning my) money we would see more private funding to back this type of work instead of the wasted (not all but most) billions currently going to NASA (who has the best people in the world, handcuffed into a bureaucratic mess)
to pay for the TENS OF THOUSANDS (yes, that's an accurate figure) of people that care for the freaking monetary sinkhole also known as the shuttle fleet.
This is nothing but as waste of time.
We could be using that money for better things. Like government programs that promote the health and welfare of our country. What a waste. I sure hope John Kerry gets in office so I can help carry more of the tax burden instead of using my money to invest in silliness like this.
Space ships.... what a silly thing to do with your money...

You know it printed beautifully on our color printer on 11x17. Unfortunately it still requries a magnifying glass to read (for anyone over 25).
