Now you can play your ripped movies on your PS2.
yet another way to infringe copyrights and feel cool about it.
Yes, but now the webdesigners will have to follow.

BBC says "Avoid Explorer"
·
· Score: 5, Insightful
It would be one step in the right direction... Still too many webdesigners want to make sites that look flashy and work only in Explorer...
They never figured out they can make the same stuff work in many browsers if they would only try and learn something about web design itself instead of designer tools...
So till that's solved a lot of people will use Explorer because their favorite site is badly designed.
Let's say: a telco's billing environment...
Going for Sun gives you the option to buy 24/7 support on both hardware and software. Now I know some of you will argue that this is of limited or no use, or that the mailinglists and docs of BSD (or any other open product for that matter), still it's good to know that if something fails, I can get someone to replace it ASAP. You get the kind of assurance you want in this environment.
Since you want the same assurances for you database, you end up with a vendor who will guarantee it will work. Limiting your options to a some Linux-es and commercial unixes...
Let's take the Starfire example, it allows you to have a single database and make it do N million transactions/hour, something that will not be that easy on a cluster in the way it's needed (and trust me they've tried).
Telcos have the tendency to want BIG suppliers for these things, just to make sure their supplier survives, and that they are solid enough to ensure they're around 3 years from now.
Then there is the matter of culture, it's just now how it's done there...
I'm not saying Solaris _will_ survive, I'm not saying BSD is not surviving, I'm not commenting on the technical differences...
I'm not saying I think my observations are the way things should be, but it is how I see things are out there...
I'm sorry, I wish things were better...
What strikes me even more about the thing is that they actually chose a GPL kernel and not a BSD licence kernel...
Maybe the BSD licence isn't as superior as some people would like us to believe.
Nobody would accept a new phone plan that was worse than the old one. Hows this sound: "Hey, we're lowering the amount of calls you can make on you're phone. If you go over 70 calls a month we'll charge you 45c a minute"
Ahum, well that's how you buy your cellphone minutes with a lot of providers here in europe.
You get so many minutes with the subscription, after that you pay by the minute...
Sounds like a good deal, get a set number is GB with a subscription and then be charged by the MB...
Good point.
It's unrealistic to think an ISP is not oversubscribed.
So there will alwais be some kind of cap.
P2P makes this worse, much more than the average user is willing to understand.
Both FreeBSD and Linux have their pros and cons.
Both are "open source" but the licences do differ.
Both are good and do the job.
Pick whichever suits you (technically, image wise, etc...).
For some reason there are quite a few people out there who seem to see this as a holy war, arguing over and over again which is technically better, which licence is better, which culture is better...
I feel is not all that different, except for the preachers who are fighting this holy war about nothing.
Should is subjective here, apparently it was never a requirement so never truely considered in the design.
Anyway that's MS's choice, you don't _have_ to agree and you don't _have_ to buy their stuff either.
They could have done securoty better when they designed it, and it would have been a more secure (=>better) product, but looking at the success the product had, they must have done something right...
I've never been really impressed by studies that claim to produce general numbers on TCO. Things depend very much on what you do and how you do it.
Any study you see could be of use to you though, they can help you do your own numbers.
Just find an employer who understands that your vast experience should be enough to master any new interresting field.
IMHO you just need to run into the right employer, not the right additional skills.
Can we classify P2P networks as Good and record companies as bad?
Record companies want too much money for their music, that's bad (they're thieves).
(most) People on (most) P2P networks are sharing this music (they're thieves).
I think they're both bad....
Maybe I'm wrong, but I do feel that especially american companies have disclaimers that are this ridiculous, somehow the law in many other countries works better (at least allows for shorter disclaimers)...
Which is more secure is such a hard question.
UN*X is structurally more secure in many people's opinions. Windows also has the disadvantage that it has many clueless admins (even the certified ones).
I think that's a big part here, any OS is as secure as the admin, a well managed Windows box can be more secure than a badly run Linux box...
A propper comparison will be much more complicatec than this article.
Enough licence discussions around, they chose GPL and probably had their reasons.

To some people a chess match could be existing (like to some people ......).
And SunOS yes! that's great! wanna run it on a PC?
try Slackware ;-)
Actually it can be...
I have been to a number of matches, alwais fun live and on TV.
And yes not seeing it live takes away some of the charm.....
True, but to me a thief is still a thief, no matter how bad the lock, or how high the price of the product.
As long as it's not bread or some other life necesity, you either pay the price or don't buy the product...
HA!
You don't get the idea behind Slackware do you?
