I went ahead and installed realplayer for linux, and was fairly pleased with the way it ran. I was leery, because of my experiences with realplayer on Windows years ago, but I have to say, it's decent now.
ahem, timothy does not jest when he advises to comment out the 'exclude=kernel' statement in/etc/swaret.conf . . . without the updated kernel, you'll get lots of errors for modules not being found (as I did with the sound card). I thought I was being conservative by not updating the kernel, but that was a foolish decision. Fortunately, it was very easy to remedy by modifying the/etc/swaret.conf file and typing 'swaret --upgrade kernel'. My only gripe now is that my mouse wheel is still not working.:-/
at http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/ there's evidence that the museum includes at least the Yoda puppet, a collection of action figures, and some SW posters.
Years ago, my grandfather was very sick/delirious with meningitis. His countenance changed dramatically: the facial muscles no longer held the face in the normal manner, so it hung strangely, looking like a different person, or that someone had fashioned a mask of his face. He tossed and turned in the hospital bed, face contorting. Every movement and mannerism was alien. It was very disturbing, especially how his face looked "off" from its usual appearance. Once he came out of it, his normal facial tone returned. But I will never forget being extremely creeped out by that image.
Yeah, that was just conjecture. The GBA player attachment is compelling enough even without the prospect of a DS player. One of my kids is set on getting a GBA, and I'm certainly not opposed to the idea myself;-)
I've been comparing the specs on the current consoles, and was surprised at how the GC has a significantly slower processor (<500mhz) that the PS2 or Xbox. I played with the display machines at Sam's, and my impression was that they are all comparable in speed/graphics. I've read some reviews that mentioned that GC had some chugging framerates w/ titles that ran more smoothly on PS2 (e.g. Serious Sam). But, I am impressed if Nintendo has been able to wring PS2/Xbox-comparable performance out of a slower processor.
. . . but a good laugh nonetheless. It was an amusing rant. When a person has carved out their own niche, and gained an audience, one of the perks is that they get to "go off" on something that annoys them and watch the ripples spread. Actually, I agree with the person in some other forum (I forget which) who suggested that maybe the author is "trolling for tech support" which goes as follows:
first, try asking "how to do XYZ in linux" questions in various newsgroups, forums, channels, etc. and of course be told to RTM.
then, post trolls saying that linux sucks because it can't do XYZ as easily/well as Windows. Linux advocates fall over themselves to demonstrate how XYZ is done.
His page turns into xx-large gibberish midway through his March 31, 2004 post. Yet looking at the page source, it appears to be fine. I'm still using Firebird 0.6 on this particular computer.
. . . although it was a foregone conclusion by this point:
w/ attachment, plays GBA titles; it would make sense for them to make an attachment which would allow it to play DS titles as well--I'd be willing to bet that this will happen
Well, I have/had an IBM Workpad, which is basically a rebadged Palm III. It is identical to my old Palm III, which I traded up for a Clie.
Got the Workpad refurbished w/ kb for my wife, but she never used it. The last straw was when I recently saw that she had given it to one of the kids to play with.
A friend was given an Ipaq, but it isn't synching for him. I offered to trade the humble-but-functional Workpad for the Ipaq (potential ARM-Linux toy), and so far it looks like he will go for it.
as a former mp3.com member, I received the following email yesterday:

oh well, I've modded 2 posts in this thread, and this post will negate them, but I had to mention this:

"Media Player for Linux
Use a simple command-line utility to play WMA files and other media formats in Linux"
Hear, hear! I write web applications for doing administrative tasks, replacing access & excel in one office, & I can relate to your experience of seeing firsthand the delight people experience using something I've made for them which makes their job easier. Very rewarding. One person said that it has simplified her job to the point where a part-timer is probably no longer needed (she hasn't told her boss that, though;) ).
hmmmm I remember reading someone's blog describing how their house was raided by the FBI, who was investigating the Half-Life2 source code theft. While I hate MS as much as the next/.'er, a crime is a crime, and I think that your anti-MS handwringing is in this case unwarranted.
Also, given the widespread useage of Windows in our government & military, I think they are sufficiently motivated to get involved.
I remember back when the first version of client/server doom was done by a Russian fellow named Sergey Malkovkin, a.k.a. Fly. He decided not to release the source at the time, and was harassed for this omission by a #doomworld regular whom shall remain nameless (since I cannot recall his nick). Anyway, aside from flaming Fly in the irc channel, this vigilante also took the liberty of hijacking the #csdoom (was that the name? I forget) channel which Fly had set up for game matchmaking purposes. The vigilante set up a bot, with ops, which then kicked everyone immediately after they attemtped to join the channel. I for one was rather irate, as I was trying to enjoy a few matches myself. Another channel was set up. Fly retaliated by hardcoding the next csdoom release to block the vigilante's ip. When he finally relented and released the source, there was some interesting controversy in the Doom community when that little bit of ip-blocking code was discovered.
Am I the only one who, at first glance, saw STFU? As in what is sometimes offered in a nice, big cup? It gave me a bit of a start when I saw that . . .
LetterJ, your point is well taken (although it came across as petulant), but believe me, I was already ahead of you on resolving this. I sent an email to Pastemusic w/ my complaint, and the exchange was positive. I was interested in the alternative music at Pastemusic, otherwise I wouldn't have checked out your recommended link. There is nothing wrong with giving/receiving complaints--feedback is essential to improving a product or service. I am always seeking feedback on identifying problems or obtaining new ideas--and I don't take anything personally. And neither did Nick of Pastemusic, as you'll see below: -----

I was referred to your site in a slashdot.org thread, but was
disappointed to see that your stream was realaudio. I cannot stand the
buggy realplayer, & I will never again install it. Why don't you set up
an ogg or mp3 stream?
I went ahead and installed realplayer for linux, and was fairly pleased with the way it ran. I was leery, because of my experiences with realplayer on Windows years ago, but I have to say, it's decent now.
. . . that strobing ad in the right-hand margin sent me fleeing. My eyes!
Mod the parent down pls, it's a sad day in /. when a person gets an 'insightful' rating for griping about the aesthetics of a firmware shell.

yep--my swaret is currently upgrading packages in the E's now . . . elvis, eog, . . .

Sorry, I can't stand the buggy realplayer, and will not install it ever again. Can't they (pastemusic) do a shoutcast stream?
This was mistakenly assigned a star wars topic thingy. Please, let's keep those universes separate.
