Alright, I might be way off base here, but if I own a copy of a CD, am I allowed to download an mp3 of that song? or am I only allowed to make an mp3 from the one that I bought? i.e. the cd?
And if so, how does putting mp3s up on a server consitute being illegal? If you're offering it to people who own the CD. (The people who don't would be infringing copyright and not you.)
So let's make a comparison, I leave my keys in the car parked on the side of the road, because I told a friend he could borrow the car, you left it there for him, it dosen't give anyone the right to steal your car, but you are allowed to leave the door unlocked for lawful purposes (i.e. friend taking it).
I would approve of a disclaimer being put on mp3 sites, to warn users that THEY are infringing copyright by downloading music they don't use, but why stop everyone from doing so?
This might sound a bit funny to some people, cuz clearly many people think that everyone on this planet steals. But I have seen it many times, where someone who has entire collections of their favorite bands will download all the mp3s to store on their pcs, either because they dont know how to extract the content or because they might think it's too difficult, but I'm willing to bet alot of people who download mp3s own some cds, and some of the music they get are from cds they own. I never assumed I was the only one who was into this, maybe other people??
A Bill that would force Slashdot.org to put warning labels on the main page.
"This site can be very addictive, and you run the risk of completly ruining your sex/social life entirely, do not enter unless you have total confidence or a big penis.
Seems we are heading in that direction. RIAA keeps pushing to own the music we hear, eventually they might be able to take it away if you listen to it from another room, as you will need to license the music to be heard in each room of your house...
The ol faithful "Get rich of the ignorant, use their money to force them to stay inline after we have a monopoly in place."
Now before the flame, I know Intel dosen't have a monopoly, because of AMD, and maybe Transmeta, they still hold a big ground, and they are the "common name" associated with a processor, and/or computer.
Even if OC'ing is not significant to most people, it's still another step in the "you-pay-our-extreme-prices-and-you-still-don't-ow n-the-product" category.
This reminds me alot like a form of DRM, you buy the chip, but Intel tells you what you can and can't do with it, which type of motherboard you're allowed to use it in maybe? Who the hell knows anymore...
Maybe you need a history lesson, but the Canadians and the Brittish drove the Nazi's out of France.
The Americans were busy with the Japonese on the west coast.
No offense to Americans, but it seems back then it took them quite a long while before realizing that the Japonese and German empires were a threat to their way of life, this time arounds seems to be done quite hasty, I'm sure the world would appreciated that kind of help back in WWII, they surely don't appreciate it now as there is little or no threat.:)
Well for starters, I'm not gonna sit here and preach M$ security, because quite frankly, the whole idea of it is kinda scary.
But looking on a positive note, this can be really good for the student community, as I was stuck writing apps that accepted arguments in dos, I might have been inspired to have some real world coding experience come in to contact with my studies. So even if M$ is not the best candidate for this, it might spark interest for others to start getting involved into education and inspiring the new age programmers that are coming out of school.
Seems not many have understood my post, let me clarify.
How much a difference in price between a p4 2.2ghz or so and a p4 3ghz?
Out of most people's budget when buying a computer. I was mearly making a comparison to the monitors industry, a 19" CRT comparable to its LCD counterpart, even tho better quality, and maybe better on the eyes for someone being on the pc alot, there is a huge difference in price, and most likely out of most people's budget, that's all I was saying.
The way everyone here is claiming it's better is true, but in a sense it's the same thing as a cadillac over a chevrolet, there's quite frankly a great deal of difference and quality, but the price is also quite often out of budget.
How about we all grab a patent application from the USPTO and make a few hundred requests to patent pissing while holding your schlong with your right hand, maybe they will get the point?
This is about parents complaining that their children are not getting a proper education already, because of many other problems and they got something that wasen't needed at all instead.
How is that socialist? or communist?
When you have children, you're opinion will change, and you'll prolly be the first at PTA meeting getting up to fight and make sure your child get's proper education.
While we are at it, teaching the kids to use/work with apples, how about we show them how to use a washboard to clean their clothes? Or carry water on their shoulders from the fountain?
If you want kids to succeed, you need to teach them what they will be working with in the future.
Should the DHS have this responsibility? to notify the companies that have a vulnerability once it's found? Who watches the watchers?
If the dept. wants to inquire information on specific businesses or corporations, they will get the key to enter from security companies (exploits).
I think this is wrong, security holes should be annouced freely, the solution is not secrecy, it's education, to teach the administrators to apply the patches needed properly and always stay up to date.
The DHS should take care of their own systems and leave cyberspace alone, I think the internet community as a whole is doing very well for itself and does not need a babysitter.

Yes this is what I am implying.

LOL
I didn't notice that, funny as hell tho.
Maybe it's cuz the bar wouldnt stretch out further? lol

Mod me down if you want, I speak only the truth.

Just a thought.
Well...
I for one am not overly excited for a speedy Java desktop environement. *cough*
Anyone know if Sun gonna code this is anything but Java?

The price is still a bit overwhelming, so I don't think it's only the gaming community refraining.
I'd love to have one, but not for the price of a P4 3ghz.

Why is everyone talking about filtering porn? Makes it sound illegal, I am of age, and I will see porn sites whenever I please.
A system for filtering is required for children, so I don't see how this system could be usefull.
Let's try to find some "on" earth before we start searching the galaxies...
lol, why did you post AC, seeing as you are obviously the parent poster, bahahaha :P
"solar wind affects affects day lengths"
:)
"on the the earth"
I thought this was restricted to speech, maybe the fingers are going to develop such problem?
Let's bring Apple and M$ together to unify OSX/Windows, see what we can come up with.
What are you talking about?
This is about parents complaining that their children are not getting a proper education already, because of many other problems and they got something that wasen't needed at all instead.

With the price of mac's these days, that would make about what? 37 laptops?
:P
Modded down?
M$ has how much market share? compared to mac?
What the chances going out in the work force and working with a mac? very slim, it's stupid.
While we are at it, teaching the kids to use/work with apples, how about we show them how to use a washboard to clean their clothes? Or carry water on their shoulders from the fountain?
If you want kids to succeed, you need to teach them what they will be working with in the future.
What a waste!
Apple is dead
Downloading songs on p2p is illegal...
I think you're going off track, this is about apple offering a legal method of buying songs, not trying to make a good p2p sharing system.
