It falls on deaf ears. Half the people submitting badly spelled comments is bad enough, but the terrible grammar and spelling on the main page really makes the site look bad. Still, since most people seem to ignore it, either they're too stupid to notice, or are just less fussy than me... ;)

Cm'on, even if the lander rolled down a ravine, the DS2 probes would still work! After all, they were designed and tested to CRASH into the surface.

Yes, they were, but they were not supposed to still be joined to the rest of the lander at impact. Besides, even if they did survive intact, the fact that they could be down a bloody big ravine would likely cause problems for the reception of any signals.

At the moment maybe. But since Mozilla can do far more than Opera currently does its hardly a fair comparison. I don't know how cross platform the Opera code is either, since the mozilla stuff is running on a fair number of platforms already.

Opera is small and fast, Mozilla is too big to download and too slow to use.

It may be small and fast now, but what happens when they put the other 75% of the features in? It'll have to grow. As for Mozilla, yes the source is big. You can hardly avoid that. I'd imagine that the Opera code isn't exactly teeny either. Anyway, its not neccessary to use the source. You can always just download the binaries. And yes, its still a little slow in places. But its improving very quickly, and is far closer to being stable than Opera appears to be.

No offence to the Opera guys, but I gave the page a quick glance and from what I can tell it's way behind what Mozilla can do right now. And Mozilla is improving fast. And its open source. My question is, what exactly is the market place for Opera. Yes, I know choice is good. But in this case I can't see that it would be a sensible choice.

If you read the article on the BBC website, you'll find that there is no monitoring done. This is merely a device which uses the satelite to pinpoint its position and then uses that to check if the car is exceeding the speed limit. The idea of satelites tracking all cars in the UK is inaccurate.

The issue here isn't speeding, it's monitoring. Technology must not be used to limit our freedoms, and we have to fight this everywhere we can as hard as we possibly can. If they can monitor your car to see how fast you're going, they can obviously monitor you to see where you are.

I see your point, and agree with most of it. However, what everyone seems to be forgetting here is that you should not have the freedom to speed. What if the government came up with some magic little box of tricks that stopped people from murdering. Would that be bad thing? I think not. But this is much the same. The number of people killed as a result of speeding is pretty high. So, where's the difference?

Well, if they're not targetting us, then they're less likely to release their code. Who is going to know or care if they use a piece of GPL code within their closed source software? Certainly not the shareholders. And if its closed source, its difficult to prove that GPL code is in there.

If they take the bold step of releasing it as open-source, then who else are they trying to please but the free software community??

  19. Does it matter? on Who Enforces the Open Source Licenses? · · Score: 2

If a company releases or uses GPL code, it is more than likely that they are trying to join in on the "we use open-source software" bandwagon. This would mean that they want people like us to like them. Purposely violating the GPL is not going to acheive this.

If its a closed source product that has used GPL code thats a different matter. It's also more difficult to detect. But if its open source, its open source for a reason. To please us. Therefore all we need to do is apply a little pressure, and get them them to sort things out. They are not going to try and alienate us, because there would be no reason for going GPL in the first place.

Granted, I gloss over some problems here, including license incompatibilities etc, but you get my jist.
