Sort of offtopic but why are we following this so closely? I mean, I understand he's challenging world governments by doing this again but do we have to watch every little step and misstep of Kim Dotcom?
Can't speak for others, but for me personally, my reason is quite simple.
So the developers of MariaDB took all their experience and knowledge that they obtained at Oracle while working on MySQL and created a direct competitor product to their prior company's product?
Yep, and he was SUCH a sneaky, underhanded shit that he left the company a whole YEAR before Oracle even knew they had it.
I don't know about that. I mean, it's not inconceivable, not even close, but when you look at the aforementioned "masked password" problem (leaving out confirmation of a password you can't see begs for applied cluebat therapy) and the fact that even a "clean" (no add-ons or extensions) Firefox 18.0.1 won't even load the page for me, because of that stupid "The Operation is Insecure" LocalStorage error...
It's definitely possible that it's not entirely a hatchet job.
"No one can conquer giant triplets of racism, materialism and militarism when machines and computers, profit motives and property rights, are considered more important than people?"
This is the same flawed mentality that has prevented Linux on the desktop from becoming more popular/usable. Instead of listening to criticism and using it to improve the software, it's disregarded/discarded because it's the easiest option. "So and so doesn't know what he's talking about. Meh."
It's only gotten worse the past few years, since it's worked for Apple, and it's really starting to feel like everyone from GNOME to Microsoft wants to be them now. Too bad the philiosophy fails to take into account the "peculiarities" of Apples ecosystem.
And if you typed it wrong the first time because they skipped the most basic step in dealing with password masking? Oh, right, you're locked out with no way to fix it
That's not what I mean by "password confirmation". That's email confirmation. This entire subthread is about someone saying that they don't make you type the password twice to confirm that you input it correctly.
Seems a bit premature to bash RIM for doing nothing more than what everyone else does
In the general case, that's true. But when you consider the thrashing they've been taking in recent memory, doing "nothing more" than anyone else does probably won't accomplish a whole lot for them.
However, you've got to admit that a Slashdot submission that reads "xxx writes: a 24-page FCC created by xxx proposes that..." make xxx appear insufferably conceited and self-obsessed
Or maybe it was just written to read like a "news" article rather than a first-person livejournal (facebook? What are the kids using now?) post.
OT, but curiosity compels me since you brought it up.
What, exactly, is the distinction between a "sprocket" and a "gear"?
It's one of those little things that's always bothered me that I've been ignorant of, but googling doesn't help much since they seem to be incorrectly used interchangeably (much like "magazine" vs. "clip") on the intarwebz.
I wonder if it's not incompetence, laziness, or a lack of manpower, rather than cowardice. We're talking entirely new dialogue trees here, and adding the content to back it up, not just throwing one option onto each NPC.
Imagine the blowback if they did do it that way.
[Aggressive] Give me the databank codes or I'll nail your tongue to a wookie! [Diplomatic] Surely we can come to some mutually beneficial arrangement... [Flirtatious] Forget the databank codes. Let's talk about us...[0]

NPC: Fine. You can have my copy of the code book for twelve thousand.
Player: *RAAAAAAAAGE*
NB: Not a huge fan of Bioware, never have been, but I think it's not inconceivable that the vitriol here is yet another example of gamers being unreasonable and clueless.

the general population would never be able to manage a real computer.
Anyone who's recently been on the business end of a tech support line/trouble ticketing system can attest that the general population still hasn't proven him wrong on that point, yet.:)
Razer MICE seem to be okay, except for a weird issue where plugging it into USB chokes any attempt to use a USB Mass Storage on my Win7-64 desktop...
Every other peripheral with their name on that I (or family who were well-intentioned and fleeced) has been utter crap. The last straw was the Onza gamepad my youngest brother gave me for my birthday. In less than 3 months, it was dead. Contacted Razer for an RMA.
No cross shipping, and I ended up paying almost half the price of a new one to ship the POS back to finally get a replacement over a month after they received it.
Patently false. While Steam might occasionaly serve to let you download DRM free games (the Humble Bundles come to mind) which continue to work with steam uninstalled, you MUST have a valid Steam account to play the vast majority of games you purchase from the service, indie or otherwise, ON TOP of any other DRM which might be loaded onto the game.
If you're cool with buying cheap games, with the understanding that you will have to bend over for whatever shit they feel like shoving into the unilaterally modified contract down the line, then so be it. Cop to it and don't let anyone try to talk you out of it.
Not, perhaps, the most compelling of arguments. He starts out fine, but ends up in true Stallman fashion. The GNU/faithful already avoid Apple like a plague carrier.
Sure it does, at least on 5.3.10-1ubuntu3.4.
It's unsigned integers it lacks, for whatever reason...

Get it yet?

Not being able to reset the password on their side is a feature.
Not requiring password confirmation is a bug, and a pretty amateurish one, to be perfectly honest.
Yeah, but that got us Danny DeVito, too, so it wasn't a TOTAL loss.

Damn you! That site's going to suck me in worse than TvTropes! ;)

Wow, lots of answers fast.
Rather than taking almost an hour ("Slow down, cowboy!") to post my "thank yous", I'll put a blanket one here.
Now I know something I didn't when I got up this morning. There are worse ways to spend a day. :) Thanks, guys.

Why can't we get copies of our ebooks when we buy the dead-tree version?
And those "draconian sick day policies" force sick workers to come in sick and risk infecting others.
The morons writing the policies because of the morons abusing it bred the coil.
They're not humans, they're The Children! Think of THEM!

"Premium" brand, my arse.
Steam itself is not DRM.

Damn it, Ray! Egon said not to cross the memes.

No, at that size, they'll need an SUV for sure.
