Hate to spoil it for ya, but Microsoft and Mono are allies. Microsoft wants.NET spread to the unix platforms while.NET servers are used exclusively for all the palladium and such that you mistakenly think Mono circumvents. The only way to 'beat' Microsoft is to completely replace their system. Ser vers, services, and all. I do appreciate Mono's effort to create a new implimentation of MSs CLI and stuff. And i can't wait to be able to run Banzai Buddy on both linux AND windows;)
For a complete.NET replacement, check out http://dotgnu.org
while I agree that people should see for themselves what Real has to offer with Helix, I think past actions should be taken into account; Not ignored. If a rapist was giving candy out to children you wouldn't go, "oh how cheritable. he is being nice now!" You would be very critical and wonder what he may be up to. It's only natural to be suspicious about a previously unfavorable companies current offerings.
I think he/she does. Lindows is filled with proprietary software and a proprietary packaging system. One of their proprietary pieces of software is their windows compatibility layer (modified BSD wine) and windows utilities.
Remember that IBM commercial showing the whole server room with mainframs and all being replaced by one small IBM linux box? Sounds like that is IBMs dream, not reality.
As much as I like nearly all science fiction universes, my favorite is that of Dune. Herbert's universe is filled with politics, planets, populations and dozens of complicated plots that could affect whole galaxies. He manages to convey a vast and complicated universe through his works. I am always amazed.
yes, as a matter of fact. I contribute constantly. I read the mailing lists thrice a day, I keep up the macosX port, and I've been learning C# so that I can eventually help out with the pnet libraries. What have you done?
before, the portable.net libraries had to be compiled using a certain proprietary C# compiler. Now, pnet can compile them by itself. So it is completely independant of proprietary software making it 100% free.
This is a huge milestone. Now everyone who has two hands and 10 fingers needs to get in there and help rhys out! There are lots of things for people to work on. From Documentation to Libraries. so go to http://dotgnu.org and get started!
Infact, they do. Their version of gcc is slightly modified to support some extra features, but it is still gcc, and it is still compatible. Apple's free developement CD includes gcc, automake, etc. along with Apple's simple IDE and tools. I think it is safe to assume that they use gcc to compile their own stuff too. Especially considering that Darwin is developed by open source hackers using systems such as linux and OSX.
That would be no improvement. Imagine trying to sue a big company for causing your company a loss in profits. Now imagine that there is a good chance of losing because they can afford better lawyers. Now, imagine having to pay for their million dollar lawyers after you just lost the case. I don't think this is the solution because it could also be used against the little guy.
Its a good thing the DotGNU project is around. The project's goal is to totally replace.NET and its whole platform, including passport, with a decentralized, open system. Not to mention, you can run.NET apps on any platform. If the project continues at a good pace, we will not have to rely on Microsoft for anything at all when it comes to Webservices.
Unfortunately, they have been forced to not only stop selling mod chips, but they also had to stop selling console development tools. Such as the Gameboy Advance linkers. I guess I wont be buying a BGA to write software for.
A whole two fireballs in two days is probably coincidence just like they said. Isn't it usually just a coincidence when a geek gets to two girls in two days?
Musicians like my brother will really benefit from this. However, the price of protools is prohibitively expensive for most independant artists. A Free (read GNU) alternative would be great for everyone.

sorry, but GTK# already exists. But that's ok, competition is a good thing.

Are Palms high performance or has the OGG/Vorbis decoder gotten a lot less processor intensive, I wonder?

good thing Microsoft doesn't have a hold on this market. I wouldn't want clippy asking me, "Are you breaking up with your girlfriend? I can help!"
Applications open in one or two bounces instead of 6 or 10.
;)
That is because one bounce takes 1 second instead 0.2

Hmm. i think i should take on this patent with the prior art of my lemon aid stand from 15 years ago.

ya, it is very important to get young people into not only OSS, but Free Software as well. I try to teach my peers with limited success.
